My niece ordered 2 tickets for Jersey Boys Nov. 9th matinee as a surprise present for my birthday. When the tickets arrived the face value of each ticket was $127.00 The company charged $401.32 ; $254 for the tickets /$147.32 in fees. We called to complain but, of course, there was no recourse. The fine print is a license to exploit.

I really don't know how the person who processed her order sleeps at night. He or she could probably tell by her voice that she was young and inexperienced in how these things work. She was so excited about surprising me with the tickets that I don't have the heart to tell her that she has been taken by an unscrupulous company. Eventually I will tell her because scam artists like this have to be stopped.

Incidentally I needed another ticket for a friend. I called a reputable business and got a ticket for the same performance , in the same row for $137.00.

Secondary Market

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, November 04, 2011

Your niece got tickets from the "Secondary Market".  Those tickets are generally going to be higher, and yes very often much higher.  She agreed to tickets at a certain price, they sold them her tickets at that price she agreed to, and you received them.  So there is no RipOff.

This is really no different than a retailer buying an item at a certain price and reselling it to you at a higher price.  The only difference is that other retailers do not tell you what they pay for the merchandise, and yes some of those markups are going to be quite large as well.

Now, I do doubt your claim that you got the same $127 Face Value Tickets for only $10 above face value.  Even a primary source(generally T****M****r) for these tickets you would  be looking at fees between $12-$30 in fees per ticket.  The only way you could possibly get it at face value is if you personally went to the Box Office. But on the off chance you did get them at that price you got a good deal, and the seller probably took at least a little bit of a loss.

Don't get me wrong.  I am not defending this company, in fact I think even the fees that TM charge are excessive and if I have the remotest chance to I will go directly to the Box Office to avoid those fees.  So you may want to actually tell her sooner than later.  That way she can use this as a lesson with everything she buys in the future.  She needs to be aware of the cost and learn to shop around or she will be taken advantage of again..and again..and again until she learns.
