I recently bought a used Infiniti at Mossy Nissan in Houston. Upon entering the finance department to sign the loan paperwork I was told that the finance company had recently updated their computers so an error was occurring in my favor and I was getting free GAP (and AD&D) insurance. The finance manager went on to say that he didn't get paid on selling GAP insurance (not true!) and he just wanted me to get something for free. The total of these insurances was $1000. Sensing something was not right while looking over the contract, I asked to see a contract without the GAP insurance included. The finance manager proceeded to shed the original contract and would only show me the monthly payment amount on screen. Going with my instinct I decided to decline the so called free insurance. At this point the finance manager was flustered and fumbled around a bit. Finally he picked up the phone and made a call which I am sure was fake. The subject of the call was that he needed a favor to get me a discount. This was the only was he could make up the difference on the payment amount of approximately $20 a month, which equals $1000 over 60 months. In short the finance manger lied about the finance company error, lied that he doesnt get paid on GAP insurance, he tried to manipulate me into spending an extra $1000 and had to lie to cover up the lies when I called him on it. Beware the GAP insurance scam!

As an ex-finance mgr I can tell you he did BS you on what he was saying. But also let me say Gap Insurance is the best thing you can come out of the F&I office with. Most people that finance a new or used car are upside down when they leave the lot. Gap pays the difference of what your regular insurance company won't pay if the car is totaled-stolen or whatever the case may be.
