My child has been a part of NYS basketball for two seasons now and slowly but surely it's gotten worse and worse. It's a 10-11-year-old league with several 13 and 14-year-olds playing in it, just for the sake of winning games.

Our coach complained to the league about one of the teams that has two kids who are each about 6'1" and the league refused to verify their age. We've since found out that the coach of the team is really buddy-buddy with the NYS folks. In our last game, the league coordinator for NYS came down and was obviously friends with the coach, and the referees are apparently freinds with the players (they said something about their brothers going to the same school). We found out late in the game that NYS had told the opposing coach that our coach had asked the league about his team, so the entire game, the coach's daughter was being tripped and pushed to the floor, even at one point having her b***s grabbed by the the d**k coach's son. Everything just went bad when the d**k coach's son actually PICKED UP OUR COACH'S DAUGHTER AND BODYSLAMMED HER TO THE FLOOR. When she was on the floor crying, the coach was laughing and pointing at her and even announced to his team that they were going to the championship. It didn't just end there, the other coach kept telling his players to kick at our players knees and ankles, and to elbow them in the face. This was the most disgusting thing I've ever seen.

Now, NYS is refusing to do anything about it, saying that unless we get EVERY PARENT FROM THE OTHER TEAM TO AGREE TO OUR STORY, they won't do anything, and even if that does happen, they'll just suspend the coach for the summer session. Whoop-de-doo.

Stay away from NYS. They suck, they really do.

NYS Response

AUTHOR: NYS San Antonio - ()

POSTED: Sunday, September 14, 2014

I apologize for your experience. As the NYS owner and coordinator I am aware of the situation you are referring to, unfortunately stories never aligned in this circumstance, which made it difficult for me to address the guilty party.

Please remember that in any conflict or situation there are always two sides if not three sides to any story. The feedback I received from my staff, referees and other parents at this game did not align. I myself Paul Tibbetts, the NYS coordinator was not at the game you mentioned and if I was I would not allow such behavior nor act buddy buddy with the coach. That being said, I am very close to every coach in my league, so if you are referring to another situation where I treated a coach like a friend, that is the way I treat everyone in the league.

Unfortunately in sports (sadly even youth sports) emotions run high and parents begin to take games too serious and say and do things they should not. For example, using language like "d*** coach's son" multiple times in your complaint is not appropriate. This language and other inappropriate behavior is not acceptable at NYS.

We are always working on preventing any situation similar to what happened to your team. I am confident that new procedures we have in place to verify ages will continue to help, but we hope that parents will take on responsibility as well to act appropriate at all times! This is a family run league and does not allow anything that can negatively affect the children.

Sincerely,

Paul Tibbetts

San Antonio Owner
