We bought a Frigidaire heat pump & air handler on 11 Aug 2008.  On 24 June 2009 the evaporator coil was replaced because of a leak.  On 22 Dec 2009 the evaportator coil was replaced again because of a leak.

On 14 Jan 2010 the outside condenser unit was replaced.  Now the evaporator coil will have to be replaced for the third time because of a leak.  This  is three bad coils in less than 3 years.

I called Nordyne Customer Service and got the usual brush off.  They won't pay for any of the service because I didn't buy a labor warranty.  I feel they should be responsible for paying for an obviously defective product.  So far I have had to pay $468 for service calls.  I am facing a charge of $180 for the latest call plus whatever else I will have to pay when they come to replace the coil.

Not Always the Equipment

AUTHOR: billy - ()

I am an installer and couldn't help but comment on this.

Yes- in some cases you just get a lemon and if you have a professional installer and they have a good working relationship with the distributor most of the time problems can be resolved.

Most of the time the problem is the installer not taking care of the problem as they should.

In regard to the continous leaks- all manufacturers are having leak problems (ALL).

I don't know of a brand name I install that is not dealing with the same problems.

I Install another brand than the one mentioned and I have had a few problems.  If I have a cronic

problem my distributor usually is able to help me get it resolved and help me and the home owner.

95% of the problems home owners have with their units is because they have gone with the CHEAPEST price they can find.  YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!

Bad A-coil or just junk

AUTHOR: Thomas499 - ()

This is a follow up to the Number of Nordyne A-coils that develop leaks so quick. There are other MFGs that are guilty as well of poor quality. The ideal that a standard home environment is producing harmful acids that eats away a-coils has really got me thinking. I my self will be installing my fourth A-coil after the coil develops multiple leaks. When the tech attempted to repair the copper would just crumble like sand. Now the companys are saying this is  Formicary Corrosion . Then please explain why does this not effect other refrigeration devices such as Refrigerators that operate 24 hrs a day, i have two refrigerators located in the same area as the acoil and the refrigerators show no sign of this Formicary Corrosion and the refrigerators are 16 and 20 yrs old. i also have a dehumidifier that i operate sometimes in stead of the ac and the dehumidifier is also 14 yrs old with no problem. I have seen poor quality copper coming from china that is mixed with other compounds and oxidizes very quickly, the same can be said about aluminum coming from china. But we as Americans are paying the high price of poor quality while the HVAC industry is getting rich. There are a large number of smaller companys complaining to the MFGs about this problem. Bad A-coil

AUTHOR: Thomas499 - ()

Now let me get this correct, The mfg tells consumers that a-coils are leaking because of indoor pollution causing acid to form on the a-coil and eat away the copper! My a-coil has filters that filter out these contaminants plus i spray the recommended coil cleaner once a year to keep clean. My unit is a split system the first a-coil lasted 10 years, the second coil lasted 3 yrs and the 3rd lasted 2 years i will now be on my 4th all nordyne a-coils. The outside unit is a york 3 ton unit, it has no filters and it is exposed to the environmental elements 24 hours a day. It has never had a leak and is 15 yrs old. Now i am to believe that my inside environment eats my a-coils.  Please Nordyne tell me the specs on your a-coils such as tubing thickness and the purity and quality of your tubing used in your a-coils starting 1990 thru 2012. Please tell me how you were able to increase efficiency of the a-coil by making  thinner walls in the tubing but increasing the failure rate of the coil. The outside unit is expose to more harsh conditions but does not fail. I will have this acoil that has just failed tested at a tech college that teaches HVAC and i will also send half of the a-coil to another labortory to be inspected. i will post the results on this site and other sites as well. Lee Wilson Clover SC. I am tired of being cheated by this  junk that has flooded the USA. Lets all make a quick dollar but who cares about quality!!!!!!!

Nordyne A-coil Leaks

AUTHOR: Thomas499 - ()

I to have experience leaking Nordyne Acoils . The first A-coil lasted 10 years the next one lasted 3 yrs and the next 2 yrs , so as of today 4-12-2013 i need another 917227n a-coil. I keep my coils clean. The tech tried to repair the last coil and it look as if it turn to sand and fell apart. I have spoke to a lot of techs and they are seeing a lot of failure on parts that are made with components from china. China has a bad rep for providing products that are poor quality and the American people get the blame and have to pay top price for junk. Lee in Clover,SC. The heat pump outside unit was made by york and still going strong with no leaks. Now the outside unit is exposed to all sorts of environmental such fertilizers and acid rain  but no problems with unit.

Equally upset

AUTHOR: Long Island Plumber - (United States of America)

I am the owner of a Long Island plumbing & HVAC service company. Today, we went to a customer because their air conditioning did not work. They have a Frigidaire furnace with their evap coil and condenser (we installed last year)

The furnace blower motor died. The furnace is only 7 years old and parts are still under warranty. Great, I inform the customer of this and they are HAPPY.

However, Frigidaire charges a $100 warranty fee, a $75 shipping fee and a $125 documentation fee. Plus it will take 2-3 weeks before the customer gets their part delivered under warranty.

Unbelievable! We installed a new blower motor this morning, part on the truck, and said screw the warranty. Yes, she paid for parts and labor, but now our customer and her 95 year old mother has a working AC in the house.

We install and service over 2,000 systems a year. Guess what? Everytime I see a Frigidaire system, I will recommend ripping it out and installing a Rheem.

Formicary corrosion is most likely the cause...

I understand the manufacturers are shifting to all aluminum or tin plated copper for their coils as the problems seem to be with the copper coils.  It also appears, there is more trouble in areas with high humidty or pollution.

Your HVAC company would appear to be correct....ask Frigidaire what they are doing to resolve the problem.

Good luck.

Evaporator coil leaks are not necessarily a defect

AUTHOR: - (U.S.A.)

Evaporator coil leaks are not necessarily a manufacturing defect, especially when they happen repeatedly like you're experiencing. These leaks are usually caused by a condition called formicary corrosion, and are most likely to happen in hot, humid environments.

Environmental contaminants such as household particles collect on the copper tubing and mix with the moisture. This forms an organic acid that begins to eat away at the copper. The acid creates a tunneling effect similar to that of ant tunnels, penetrating the copper completely and creating the leak. Tighter home construction, building materials, household cleaners, carpet chemicals, acidic foods and adhesives are just a few examples of common household items that contribute to formicary corrosion. It is nearly impossible to control these airborne particles just as it is to prevent moisture from forming in a high-humidity environment.

At NORDYNE we do stand behind our products and our published warranties, which do not include labor. I just wanted you to understand that a leaking coil is not necessarily a defective coil, and you or your dealer should investigate why this is happening so often in your home.

If you'd like to discuss your warranty further, please call us at 1-800-422-4328. Thank you.

You can see my original report below. We purchased ours in '08 as well. 2 coils, 3 fan motors, a capacitor and pounds and pounds of freon. Almost $1500 in repairs. I say we all load our units up on a truck, get the news media out there and dump them at Nordyne's front door. They are nasty scumbags and don't give a crap about us..the consumers..the ones who virtually pay their stinking salaries.
