I never ever sign up for any free offers. I guess I'm too cynical. But, my roommate swore that she signed up for free magazines, canceled them the next year and never had to pay. So, I went for it. I knew that I must cancel or there would be an automatic renewal.

Everything went great, I called the 1-800 number on my statement, talked to an automated machine, cancelled and never had to pay a dime.

So, a few months later I saw the same offer and signed up again. This time it was not so easy. When I called the 1-800 number, the automated machine could not find my account.

I waited and waited and waited b/c they said to wait for a service representative, but after a while the elevator music cut out. I finally hung up. I tried calling again. Entered my info, and wow they found my account.

Only they only listed only one magazine as being in my account and it was not one of the two charged on my credit card. I went ahead and cancelled that one.

I did a internet search on NSS and found this site. I just called the number mentioned in one of the other posts, 1-800-382-5210 and actually got a real person! Only she could not find my account. After about 5 minutes, her voice was interrupted mid-sentance, by another voice who said "Thank you for waiting, we have located your account."

The second voice then proceeded to tell me my account would be credited and the subscriptions would be cancelled. (After trying to convince me to keep the subscriptions or send them to someone else as a gift.) We'll see if my card gets credited.
