Although I do not live in Denver I was visiting a friend and we went for a bike ride. I fell off my bike and gouged my knee. It and my hand were bloody and there was some gravel in the wounds.

Although I attempted to clean up myself, it was deeper and more painful than I could manage so my friend said we needed to go to the emergency room. It was on a Sunday so my friend's doctor's office was closed.

Despite delays, the sevice I received from the nurse and doc was friendly and seemed professional and caring. They cleaned me up and put in 3 stitches.

I have insurance with a high deductable but believed that I was covered for emergency room services.

When the bill came (from the hospital alone) it was for over $2000 (insurance took it slightly under $2000). For someone who pays $700 in rent each month, that was a mindboggling amount.

I still have pain in my knee and a medical person I saw said I may have a fragment of bone that could be causing the problem (hasn't healed 5 months later). I'm living with that for now.

I write to warn people on fixed incomes or who do not have finanacial reserves to AVOID PORTER HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOM.

Yes that is what it costs...

Medical care is expensive no matter where you go.  And because of the nature of an ER, you are going to get charged a premium price when you go to one...any one.  You were probably charged $200 for just registering and being told to go wait in the waiting area until you are called.

If you are in a life threatning emergency or one that could cause you serious problems, you need to go to the ER.  Was your injury to that level....who knows.

Now, why they say highsight is 20/20, perhaps this can help you in the future.

There is another level of service between a regular doctor and an ER, known as Urgent Care.  They could have handled something like this and it would have been a fraction of the cost of an ER.  Where even depending on your exact insurance it may have been no more than a regular office visit with your regular doctor.  Now, they are often not 24/7, but in a city the size of Denver there were probably at least a few that were open on a Sunday.   In the future before you travel, it may be to your advantage to get a list of Urgent Care's and ER's in the area you plan to be in...just in case.
