I JUST RECENTLY RECEIVED MY FIRST BILL FROM PPL AS I JUST MOVED TO WILKES BARRE PA ON 3/1/14 AND TO MY SHOCK AND SURPRISE MY FIRST ELECTRICAL BILL WITH PPL IS $1,014.17, I CALLED TO FIND OUT WHY THIS OUTRAGOUS BILL AND THE CUSTUMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE THAT ANSWERED STATED "WELL THATS YOUR BILL EVERY MONTH", NOW THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL I COULD HAVE RAN UP AN ELECTRICAL BILL FOR OVER $1,014.17 A MONTH, I AM NOT RUNNING A RESTAURANT OUT OF MY HOME, I AM SINGLE MOTHER OF 2 ON A FIX INCOME, THEY TOLD ME ON THE PHONE THAT MY METER WAS UPDATED AND THAT I HAD A SMART METER, THE METER THAT IS CURRENTLY ON MY PROPERTY IS AN ANALOG METER, SO I DONT KNOW WHERE THEY GET IS AN UPDATED SMART METER, I ASKED TO HAVE SOME ONE CHECK THE METER AND THEY TOLD ME IF I WANTED SOMEONE FROM PPL TO COME CHECK THE METER OR PERHAPS CHANGE IT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY MONEY OUT OF MY POCKET TO HAVE THEM JUST CHECK OR CHANGE THE METER, I HONESTLY THINK THAT METER NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AND CHECKED FOR PROPER SERVICE, PPL IS NOT GETTING AN ACTUAL METER READING, THEY ARE ESTIMATING MY USAGE AND MAKING IT SEEM LIKE IS AN ACTUAL READING, I AM CALLING EVERYBODY THAT WOULD HEAR ME AS I FEEL THEY ARE RIPPING CUSTOMERS OFF. IF ANYBODY KNOWS OF A NUMBER OR PERSON TO CALL FEEL FREE TO LEAVE ME THAT NUMBER AS I KNOW FOR A FACT I DID NOT SPEND $1014.17 IN ONE MONTH.

Are you forgetting that its cold as can be in Pen? Whenever there is a demand and a very high demand for power the overall price JUMPS up. I dont know if you remember ENRON. They showed us HOW electricity is really a finite resource. There is only so much generated per day. As the demand in one area goes up so does the price. Im not saying youre lying, im not saying you are fabricating, I am saying that there MAY be other factors involved that you are not considering. As your CURRENT bill would be for the past month, think back to how cold it got. Then factor in at what tempreture YOU like to keep your home. Once you do that you may see how your electric heater could use a lot of energy to keep you comfortable.

I would suggest that you call them and set up a payment plan. This way you can still recieve electricity. While you are paying on it, you can attempt to get some form of resolution. It may require that you pay for a workman to come out a check your meter. The average fee is between $75-$150 dollars. This is MUCH cheaper then the 1k you are looking to pay. Many times if it is found to be a defective unit, they reverse the fee and credit your bill. I would suggest that you start doing some of the simple energy saving chores available to you. Following is a short list that may help.

1. Turn DOWN the thermostat, wear MORE clothes. Instead of shorts wear sweats. Put on socks.

2. Unplug EVERY ac charger that is in a wall socket. If you are not using it remove it. Even though electricity isnt passing through the AC charger, it still draws electricity.

3. Centralize your life. Pick a room, use THAT room more then others. This way you can control the light use.

4.Turn off lights. If your not in that room, turn it off.

5. Buy a cheap forced air floor heater. This way you can do a little thing like warm your feet without firing up the big internal system. Using #3 a small forced air heater can keep one room nice and tostey.

6. when you use devices that generate heat, see how you can warm your house with it. I.E. Clothes dryers, ovens, stoves. These all generate a lot of "free" heat. I have found that I can let the heat from the dryer warm my house. You just disconnect the external hose. You will have lint everywhere, and your house will smell like clean laundry. You can ONLY do this with electric dryers. You risk CM poisoning if you do this with a gas dryer.

7. Consider #3 again and take your meals in the livingroom. In my house the living room is the central hub. This means that during the winter months, everyone hangs out in there. The more bodies in a room the faster its going to heat up.

8. UNPLUG EVERYTHING!!!!!!! Yes it sucks to have to plug in appliances that you need to use, but what sucks more? Plugging stuff in or paying over a grand in electricity.

9. FLASHLIGHTS!!!!! There are a ton of excellent LED flashlights. Keep the MAIN lights off and when you pass through a room just use a flashlight. You can get a really good flashlight at RadioShack. Its metal and a LED and takes 4 AA batteries. As of this writing you can get a pack of AA batteries from RS for about $2.50. So with a MINOR expenditure of cash, roughly $30. You can save HUNDREDS.

10. Find ways to do the simple chores WITHOUT electricity. It may take awhile for you to do this. When ever you are doing something ask yourself a question. Is there a way to do this WITHOUT using electricity. Use a MANUAL can opener. Take your rugs outside and beat them instead of vacume them. Sweep the carpet before you vacume. Every erg of energy you can save by NOT using will save you money.

These are all WINTER tips. During the summer, the tips change but the goal remains the same. To save energy and thereby money. As I said before, its very well possible that you DID use that much electricity. But you didnt KNOW that the electricity that you were using was purchased at a much higher rate due to demand. SO you went about NORMALLY using electricity without the knowledge that it was more expensive then usual. I hope for your wallets sake that it is a faulty meter, but odds are it read just fine. By following these 10 steps you should see a DRASTIC reduction in your electric bill.

How many kilowatt hours does your bill show you used?

To check the accuracy of the meter, which is within 0.3%, check the reading on it now and allow for the number of days between  now and the reading on your current bill.  ALL revenue grade meters are required to be extremely accurate.

Your meter can easily be a smart meter, pretty much regardless of its appearance.  In most cases it just sends the reading via cell phone frequencies to the power company.

On your bill subtract the previous reading from the current reading and multiply the result by your cost per kwh.  It will approximate what you should be billed less any taxes, fees and facility charges.  Do you use electric heat?

Whenever a bill is an estimated bill, it is noted on the bill. Any questions, ask your elec. company or repost on here and I'll try to answer you.  No, I don't work for them and had never heard of them before now, my power comes from Xcel Energy.
