I received a letter in the mail yesterday from this company named Rainbow Financial Trust. I noticed the envelope was from Canada, as it had a Canada post mark on the right side. I opened the letter and inside I found a check in the amount of $3188.20 and a memo congratulating me on being the winner of $54,000.

The first thing that came to mind is "Alright, someone is trying to scam me!" I continued reading. I then decided to call the number listed. At first I received a recording saying that "all circuits are busy, please leave a name and number" yada, yada, yada. I did not want to do that, so I called back ten minutes later.

I finally spoke to someone. He had a thick accent. I asked him what this was all about and why do I have this check. He asked if I had entered any contests like Publisher's Clearing House, did any surveys for Reader's Digest, etc. I have entered contests in the past, so I felt compelled to listen. He said that all participants are selected through a computerized ballot system and that my name was drawn.

He instructed me to deposit the check; this will cover my "international clearance fee". And when I had deposited to call them back. I asked him for clarification, "Let me get this straight...if I deposit this check, that is when you will call to set up my appointment for delivery of the prize money, and not before?" He stopped for a second and said yes ma'am.

I went a long with him and took down some information. Before I hung up, I asked "And with whom am I speaking?" He said, with a thick accent by the way, "Mr. Allen Wagner." I said alright, well thank you very much and he wished me a great evening, the whole nine yards.

To me this just screams scam and ripoff. I give it to my father, who works very closely with the U.S. Attorneys and various other government factions such as the US Postal Inspectors. They should have a field day with this. I certainly hope that no one out there goes for this gag, especially since this "Allen Wagner" is rather a smooth talker and very pleasant. Don't go for it!
