I bought a leather lounge suite from Rhodes on the 3/19 2002. The furniture was delivered on time as agreed. The salesman talked me into buying a leather guard warranty, I did this as I was guaranteed that I would be covered for accidental rips, burns, tears etc.

I moved apartments and the sofa was damaged while getting it through the door. I immediately registered a claim with Rhodes, Their customer care division called me shortly thereafter and rejected the claim outright. This I find totally unacce[table as the claim was rejected without even inspection of the damage. I was told that moving was abuse and that if a child had ripped the furniture with a sharp object, then that would be considered accidental.

I have subsequently spoken to a number of their senior management. All to no avail. They wouldn't even suggest who to call to get a quote to repair the damage. As a new immigrant to the USA I am not only cheesed at the total lack of customer service from Rhodes but also in their apparent disinterest in helping me resolve the problem.
Customer Service in the USA is known to be the best in the world.

I have experienced wonderful support from other companies
and expected at least the same from Rhodes.

The bottom line of my gripe is that I will never ever buy from Rhodes again and in fact would not recommend them to friends or family.

I have purchased from Columbus Ohio stores and have been completely satisfied

AUTHOR: Krista - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, July 28, 2004

I purchased a table, chairs, and china cabinet set from a Columbus Ohio Rhodes Furniture store and can say I was completely satisfied with their furniture and warranties. The table was a very fragile piece shipped from Italy with six chairs (all with a cream cloth seat) and the china cabinet was elegant with glass etchings, ect. We purchased the set (with two very young children) and the warranties.

Upon delivery it was noticed that the cabinet got banged up and the wood was chipped. We got ahold of the company and they ordered us a new piece. Later one of my children got spaghetti on a chair and they sent a service tech who tried to clean it and found the fabric was the kind that leaves water marks so they ordered me a new chair. I had several incidences with stains and every time they fixed the problem thoroughly.

I think sometimes it depends on how you approach the situation. I will definately purchase from Rhodes again and would recommend them to anyone.
I have since purchased furniture from other retailers and had to rely upon the warranty service and can say Rhodes blew them away in service.

waranty rip off

AUTHOR: Amy - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, June 25, 2004

I, too, was ripped off by a warranty I purchased from Marks Fitzgerald/Rhodes Furniture on TWO occasions. Quite simply, I could have avoided the second rip off had I simply gone with my gut instincts and not purchased a dining room set from this callous, insensible, inconsiderate company.

My initial experience deemed "the first rip off" follows: I bought a sofa from Rhodes in Douglassville, Georgia, and purchased the fabric warranty. On a Saturday night, a brownie morsel dropped on my sofa and left a smudge on my fabric. I followed the instructions for removing a stain on the warranty card, but the suggestions did not remedy the problem. I could not report the stain since customer service was already closed, so I planned to call Monday. That same night, my father passed away, and, of course, I sped to my hometown 100 miles away. And who in their right mind would think about calling in a stain within five days while coping with the unexpected loss of a parent; making funeral and burial arrangements; and consoling a grieving mother, brothers, grandmother, other family members, and friends? Rhodes refusal to honor the warranty when I reported the stain upon return to Georgia ONE WEEK after the stain set in obviously implied that the company and its customer service representatives and managers have no respect for those dealing with an unforeseen loss of life, even when the circumstances require leaving town for a short period of time. They refused to even ATTEMPT removing the stain, even with an understanding that they could not guarantee anything since it was past the five day time window for reporting. Should they have said that they would attempt removal but would not be able to replace the couch since it wasn't reported in time, I would have been fine with that.

The second rip off: I fell in love with a dinette set that I saw in an ad. Although unsatisfied with previous experience with the company, I went to the nearest Rhodes to look at the set and fell in love with it. My mother, wanting to by me a housewarming gift, decided to purchase it when she bought her living room furniture. I accompanied my mother to Marks Fitzgerald (part of the Rhodes family stores) where the salesperson talked my mother into buying the warranty--against my advice. We asked the salesperson to many questions pertaining to the warranty, and she assured us that if anything happened, the warranty would cover the table and there was no need to worry about transferring the warranty into my name. Once the table was delivered to her, she drove the table the hundred miles to my house, and together we assembled the table and treated the wood as the warranty papers required so as not to void the warranty. Ten months later, the finish on the table wipes off as I'm cleaning the table with the provided cleaner/polisher that came with the wood care kit. I called the Rhodes in Douglasville on Monday morning. They tell me I must call the store where the furniture was purchased. So I called Marks Fitzgerald (a Rhodes family store) in Birmingham and spoke to a customer service representative. However, this person could not help me and directed me to another customer service representative outside of the Birmingham store. When I finally reached a person to whom I could submit my claim, I was told that the warranty was voided because I was not the original owner/purchaser. I explained that this was a gift and was assured at the time of purchase that the warranty would still be valid even though it was a gift to me. The customer service representative told me that the warranty was not valid because the table was at my residence, but they would fulfill the warranty claim if the table was at my mother's. Unsatisfied with that response and the lady's attitude, I called the district manager in Birmingham, who was very helpful, but he informed me that I would need to call an Atlanta area store to service my claim. He gives me the name and number of the district manager in my area and even contacts the guy himself. The next day, I receive a call and schedule an appointment for the following week, assuming the damaged spot would be restained. I should have known better. The repair person inspects the table and tells me that the warranty probably won't cover the damage because it looked like a chemical damage. As far as I know, there are no damaging chemicals in plates, glasses, silverware, or napkins, which were the only things that came in contact with the table. The guy took pictures and told me his manager would contact me on Monday with a decision. Tell me that's not crap--shelling out $150 for a warranty that is not honored because the guy "thinks" it "looks" like chemical damage. I can tell you I never spilled anything but tea on that table and that was several months ago.

The bottom line, Rhodes will try to find any way out of honoring a warranty and even refuse giving tips on correcting the problem yourself after they reject the claim. On that note, be careful when purchasing a warranty and moving homes. One of the customer reps told me that moving from the residence on the purchase papers technically voids the warranty. However, the rep. understands that many customers are mobile, moving from home to home, and does what she can to validate the warranty.

Rhodes has lost my business, as well as my mother's, my grandmother's, other family members', and close friends' business. I hope to convince colleagues and classmates to purchase their furniture elsewhere. I know losing a few people's business is not much to a big company, a loss is a loss--loss of money, loss of trust, and loss of faith in the company.

rhodes furniture store also ripped me off!

AUTHOR: Kristin - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, February 17, 2004

I purchased a leather sofa at the Altamonte springs store in Florida. I also purchased the same warranty. My sofa is sagging and they sent someone out to inspect my sofa and said it would not be covered because they said it was from sitting on the sofa incorrectly. This is not true. I am very unhappy that they are not coving this when it should be under warranty. I will never buy any furniture from this store again, because the whole reason why i purchased the extended warranty was for this reason.

Not a rip off......

AUTHOR: Roger - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, January 14, 2003

Hello:

My wife and I purchased two recliners from a Rhodes store in the Atlanta area. The salesperson suggested the extended warranty and we agreed.

About a year later, one of the recliners began to sag very deeply in the main seat area. I immediately thought that it was ruined and that Rhodes would not handle the repair.

As it turns out, I called the customer care center and received a great response. They set-up an appointment (called to remind me) and sent out a very nice gentleman to inspect it. He immediately said that the mechanism had failed and ordered a new one. He explained that it would arrive at our house in about 2 weeks and to call the customer care center when it arrived and he would return to install it.

Everything happened as he said it would. He was very nice and also knowledgable.

My experience is that Rhodes does exactly what they say they will. My advise to the "victim" of this supposed rip-off is to read the warranty. Clearly moving a sofa and damaging it in the process is not normal wear and tear or accidental. When you move, you have certain expectations that something will be damaged in some way if you do not take proper precautions.

I would say to the person leaving such a childish, whiney comment that he should grow-up and realize that a warranty doesn't cover everything under the sun.

Again, Rhodes is a great company with caring associates.
