I was contacted on 10/6/2006 about a delinquent account I had with Sprint. I canceled my Sprint service last winter sometime and honestly had forgotten about the bill. When I received a phone call from RPM telling me that I owed this money to Sprint I didn't dispute it one bit...I knew it was my mistake. I (stuipdly) agreed to authorize a 1 time payment of 481.44 (this included the cancelation fee) so that my debt would be fully taken care of. I was told that I had to pay in full by the end of the month or it would be reported to the credit bureau. So...in trying to do the right thing I said OK. I didn't think much more about it until I got another phone call about 3 weeks ago and someone from RPM was yelling at me on the other end because I didn't make the automatic withdrawl payment. I told them that I had authorized it and it wasn't my fault that they screwed up on their end. Long story short I authorized another payment for the end of this month.

I started thinking about it and realized it would put me in a real bind if I paid the debt in full so I called today to ask if I could set up payment arrangements. The agent I was 'lucky' enough to get, Misty, kept yelling at me that she would not stop my payment. I kept trying to tell her that I didn't want to stop it completely just to make payment arrangements. She kept saying "I'm not stopping your payment!" Well I did some research on the company and came across this website and decided to call Sprint to try to deal with them directly.

They told me that I could in fact make payment arrangements with them and so I made a payment and they told me to call RPM to tell them to stop the payment from coming out of my account tomorrow. I spoke to a supervisor who called me MANY names, was VERY degrading to me and threatened to SUE me if I stopped payment on the check at my bank and that because they are in Washington that is legal. Is it? He actually told me that he hoped I did stop payment on the check because he would love to sue me and that it would teach me a valuable lesson!! I kept trying to ask questions..he would cut me off. After spend 5 hours on the phone with Sprint I finally was told that they can't sue me for the money, RPM didn't pay to get my account and that I could in fact deal directly with Sprint and not have to deal with RPM anymore.

The RPM supervisor was SO mean to me that he had me in tears for most of the day. I NOW know that I shouldn't have given RPM my bank account information but I was eager to clear up this matter and never dreamed that a company would opperate this way. Am I going to have a problem in the future with them trying to just take money out of my account? I never received anything in writing from them and when I requested something today Misty told me that they already sent me one letter (I didn't receive it) and that they couldn't send out another one. Company Policy? So how can I deal with this? I am so sick about this company that I am ready to fight them with all I have! I am paying Sprint directly so RPM will NEVER get a dime of my money...will I have to fight to keep them from getting it? Is there any type of action I can take against them aside from the BBB? I've heard that doesn't work. Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Amanda, this is EXACTLY why you NEVER speak to ANY debt collector on the phone!!

Amanda,

Always get it in writing! Stay off the phone!

Speaking to a collector on the phone will never do anything positive for you, and will always make things worse, as you found out.
