Too many times I have seen reports of people who were improperly imprisoned because Joe Arpaio's goons had screwed up. These are the people who are filing lawsuits against Maricopa County and Sheriff Joe and winning, costing us taxpayers more and more every year.

And what about medical care? Do inmates (even if they are convicted felons) not deserve to receive medical care? How many have died in Joe's keep due to lack of medical attention? I have seen those lawsuits too, and suffered the consequences in higher taxes.

Frankly, I would rather have a Sheriff like Kevin Beary in Orange County (Orlando), FL than this vigilante cop wannabe politician. Pink handcuffs, pink underwear, webcams in booking, where will it end?

This is the same idiot who backed his department issued Crown Vic over a curb and into a ditch, and blamed it on a faulty transmission. In reality, he accidently put his car in reverse instead of drive (he was backed into the parking spot), so when he hit the gas, over the curb he went. It was a funny picture though.

This is also the same guy that a few months ago said he was going after the contractor that put up the fence around tent city, because 3 inmates were able to escape over a 10-foot electrified fence. Um, what were the guards doing?

I can't wait to leave this armpit of the west and move back to Florida.

Since a criminal believes in "giving" their victims NOTHING but abuse, the criminal is entitled to the exact same thing. Pond big rocks into little ones for 10-12 hours per day and they'll get the idea. Let them go hungry for days at a time will help set their minds right too.

It's been proven that the average criminal has done the same crime several times before being caught. How much dignity and respect do you believe they offered those victims?

Just something to think about to those that think we should treat people like dirt. I'm not saying they should get any benefit from being incarcerated, but to treat them less than human only LESSENS our society as a whole.

First to Angel: Sheriff Joe does not perform trials or convictions. So the young man suing over a false conviction is not Joe's fault. A probation officer would know this.

The Maricopa Sheriff's office patrols a small populated area of the county. Cities and towns are responsible for patroling and arresting criminals. They only patrol unincorporated areas, or those areas they have contracts with (Wittmann, Carefree, Cave Creek, Sun City etc.). So they are not responsible for crime rates in Phoenix, Mesa, Tempe or other large urban areas.

Jail should not be a comfortable place to visit for anyone. They are designed to punish for crime, not reward. Why do they even get money on the "books?" That seems insane to me. The victims of their crime don't get money to buy stuff, why should they!

We live in a society where people refuse to accept responsibility for their own actions, and this is supported by the numerous post here.

Sheriff Joe does the job he was hired to do. Our Sheriff here is too worried about getting re-elected to actually do something about crime. I appologize for this more than anyone can know. If I had injured someone or worse yet killed someone I do not know how I would live with myself. You'll love this. At the local AutoZone the other night, 3 scumbags tried to escape after robbing it. The cops were waiting for them outside. It seems these three geniuses have been targeting parts stores in the area. When they walked outside, the cops told them to drop their weapons. The short story is 1 dead, 2 critically injured. Those two will rot in prison...life without parole at the least. They won't be climbing any fences, ever.

On Tuesday evening around 6pm, 3 inmates at Tent City escaped confinement. How did they do this? They climbed over the fence.

This is a 10-foot electrified fence, with razor wire around the top.

While watching the 10pm news on 3TV, Joe came on and talked about how he couldn't belive anyone could escape. Then, get this, he said he would be contacting the vendor that constructed the fence and inform them of the "defficiancy" in their fence! Ha, what a joke! He blames the fence builder instead of his own deputies!

My question is, how come the deputies didn't prevent the escape. Maybe because most of them are morons?

Let me just say that Maricopa County (Phoenix) has the 3rd largest jail system in the US. Let me say that again, WE HAVE THE 3RD LARGEST JAIL SYSTEM IN THE US (and Joe brags about this fact), and it is growing all the time. Two new jails were just opened to alleviate overcrowding.

So tell me why, if Joe Arpaio is doing such a great job, that our prisons are so full, and they have to build more just to make room.

And guess what, we have a higher percentage of "innocent" criminals than just about anywhere in the country.

And the lawsuits? Most are brought by persons who were wrongly jailed, or family who lost loved ones due to the lack of necessary medical treatment (and so what if they were convicted criminals). And it is costing us residents millions of tax dollars.

So before you go spouting off about the "poor wittle mistreated CRIMINALS", check your facts.

And by the way, no, I have not, nor have I ever been, an inmate at Joe's, or any other, prison system. I am just tired of my tax dollars going to waste on a politician who does not even have the power himself to make an arrest.

Maybe if you lived in AZ you would make sure you had your facts before opening your mouth... This is a jail not a prison. Many of these people have not even been to trial yet... No one wants someone that commited a crime to be pampered but I don't think leaving tent stakes out for the bad ones is a good idea to use on someone that fell into bad times and is doing time for not paying his child support.

We have paid out over 30 Million in lawsuits from this mans negligence for not keeping prisioners safe... One man that I met was behind on his child support and was housed in tent city and got his face bashed in now from what his parents tell many he is mentally retarted and has all kinds of metal plates in his face. This taught him a lesson.. He is collecting Social Security now and his kids are on welfare.. The sheriff failed to keep him safe and now we as Tax Payers will pay until these children are 18.

They don't have TV's, Radio's , or even food in this jail so don't say we need to take something away that they never had... I don't want a prisioner to have anything like that also but read first this is a jail waiting for trial or short term holding not a prison.... I don't want them to do away with the punishments I want them to make the innocent safe...

If someone gets caught speeding they should not have to go through his crap to pay the price.. 30 million is just what is documented for public view there are alot more that settled out of court.. We don't get that figure. I also do agree with some of the people that say Jail should not be a vacation, People that have been convicted of a crime should be made to do hard labor. Here in my state they make the "inmates" clean the county nursing home, shovel the walk ways to the county offices, they work in the field farming. For the record, I have never been arrrested or spent time in MY county jail.(I pay for it, not JOE!!) I, Too have been a victim of a crime, Ssexual Assault/ Dangerous Crime against a child.I like many wanted to belive the media hype that this man portrays, we all want someone who is "Tough on crime", and make it so "they don't want to come back", but I also want to know that my rights are secure if I am ever accused of a crime and to do that I need to make sure EVERYONES rights are secure. Sherriff Joe does'nt believe that ACCUSED criminals have rights and that goes against everything the our Crimanl Justice system stands for. He is not a law unto himself and most learn to respect all of the constitution not just the parts he likes.

His total disregard for human life and dignity, his unwillingness to admit he MIGHT make a mistake, and his demigod attitude of self rightousness has worn thin and I hope that come September 7th Saban beats him in the primary and we can go on to right all of Joes' wrongdoings.

Any inmate that remains there after conviction has only been punished by up to 1 year. (Child Support not included, this is actually a civil crime in AZ).
For the record, I have never been arrrested or spent time in MY county jail.(I pay for it, not JOE!!) I, Too have been a victim of a crime, Ssexual Assault/ Dangerous Crime against a child.I like many wanted to belive the media hype that this man portrays, we all want someone who is "Tough on crime", and make it so "they don't want to come back", but I also want to know that my rights are secure if I am ever accused of a crime and to do that I need to make sure EVERYONES rights are secure. Sherriff Joe does'nt believe that ACCUSED criminals have rights and that goes against everything the our Crimanl Justice system stands for. He is not a law unto himself and most learn to respect all of the constitution not just the parts he likes.
This is why people are upset here in Maricopa County. His total disregard for human life and dignity, his unwillingness to admit he MIGHT make a mistake, and his demigod attitude of self rightousness has worn thin and I hope that come September 7th Saban beats him in the primary and we can go on to right all of Joes' wrongdoings.

Yes, there are some legitamite made up stories that are from people trying to jump on a band wagon and try to get something out of it. The problem is, those people disappear after a while, we won't. I am a Grandma not a kid and I don't get upset for people doing time for crimes that they have committed.. Most of these people in jail have not even had there trials they are waiting to go in front of the judge.

Why shouldn't they be safe in our jails? I hope one day you land there and maybe you will see it in another view point..

Fortunately for the citizens of Maricopa County, it's not just us "whining wives and girlfriends" who are outraged. In case you have been living in a cave somewhere, Mel, let me fill you in........The law enforcement agencies in Maricopa County are not backing Arpaio. The firefighters of Maricopa County are not backing Arpaio. MCSO Deputies are not backing Arpaio. Senator McCain is not backing Arapio. The Arizona Republic announced today, that it is not backing Arpaio. The list goes on and on. Every day, citizens are standing up and saying, "Enough is Enough...Joe Must Go".

Seems to me that most of the folks whining here about this very effective sheriff are the wives and girlfriends of convicted criminals. Maybe this is the first time in their pampered lives that someone put their foot down and said "we're mad as hell and we're not going to take it anymore". Just because your parent(s) let you run around and do whatever and whoever you want doesn't mean that the State of Arizona is going to do the same. Sheriff Joe is the caring parent that you never had. It's love, it's tough, and it's wearing pink underwear. Get over it.

To all of you from other state that agree with Joe Arpaio's method let me give you some facts. Before any attack me let me say that I am not or have never been an inmate. I am a taxpayer. I do not like my dollars to go to the many lawsuits that are rightly brought against Joe Arpaio.

Currently there is several multi million dollar lawsuits filed against Joe Arpaio. Many are wrongful death suits. These suits will cost the taxpayers millions. As his re-election is nearing, support for his opponent is climbing. Dan Saban has support from all of the states law enforcement organizations including his own employees. He has the support of John McCain, the Republican executives, the firefighter and the list goes on.
Un-iformed voters continue to believe that he is tough on crime. That is an image the Joe himself tells everyone that will listen. Problem is the reality is just the opposite. Groups like Mothers Against Arpaio, Arpaio.com have started because of the outrage against what is really happening in this state. What I can never understand is why the Feds have not stepped in. Arizona is once again shamed by our choice of politians.

I Don't understand why people from another state would comment on this man if they don't know all the facts about him. Since he has been in office the county has paid out over $30 million in law suits for his negligence. That does not count all the suits that were settled out of court. He states he is above the law he is the sheriff. How can he afford all the homes he owns? How can he keep up the lifestyle he has on the pay the state pays him? Read about the man before you open your mouth. I went to the jail just to see how people were treated and I will tell you it was not nice you are a number and treated with the most disrespect when you walk into that building. You have to pay to put your belongings into a locker the soda and water machines were out of beverages so you could not even have a drink. Mind you its 110 out and you have to wait 2 or 3 hours to even see someone. This man is out of control who cares about he pink underwear..... He has out juveniles on the chain gang.... What is that teaching them they are not trying to get them to turn their lifes around he is abusing them. If we did that to one of our kids they would be taken away from us why should he be above the laws and able to abuse?

I want each and every one of you people in Maricopa County to go out and kick this lowlife sheriff out of office once and for all! Otherwise, these people who are in jail for minor things if not for crimes he/she didn't commit will continue to be used, abused and if not killed by this buffoon.

Sheila, my condolences for what happened to you, but if you fully read and understand the tactics and illegal activities that Arpaio, the Mesa Police Department, Maricopa County Detention Center, etc. are involved in, then you too would be outraged. Remember: the truth will always come out and eventually Arpaio will be exposed for the fraud and scum he truly is. And in the meantime, businesses and major companies like Motorola are leaving the Phoenix area as a result.

Being a law enforcement officer means two things: to protect and to serve the community, and to abide to the law as well. NO ONE is above the law, not even the President of the United States, and that is something Arpaio and his goons neglect to comprehend.

Answer: Prisoners don't have to deal with the crooked law officers or Joe! My fiance is currently on 4 months for breaking a restraining order which was by the way done with permission and his first violation. They gave him 6 months for this! Now in 4 months he has been to the hospital twice, why is that, well if I could prove it which hopefully soon I will, my brother who is one of the goones put a word out about an abuser coming in because they don't want us together.

Now, after contacting a lawyer and getting ready to file the lawsuit they have finally let him see a doctor (3weeks later) to discover 2 bruised ribs, cracked jaw, and broken nose.
And yes, Joe does know about all these fights that go on, they have the cameras!! He promotes them, and I myself called regarding my fiance and still nothing done.

No one no matter what the case may be should be put into danger of losing their lives from going to the jail overnight. Thats whats wrong with this state, the compassion is GONE! Maby I'll just go back to NY, at least the roaches are roaches and respect is still taught.

Eat the same slop, sleep in the heat on a metal cot, take showers with all of the other inmates and do manual labor. Like a couple other posters, I believe Joe is doing a great job. Criminals are, after all, criminals. If they wanted to maintain their "rights" they should have abstained from whatever crime they performed. If every jail and prison were run by a "Joe" we'd have alot less crime. I, too, notice that it's only family and friends of detainees that are upset with Joe's system, or political activists who are also the major cause of most of the U.S.'s problems.

Why does a criminal deserve ANYthing (including visits and money from poor mom)? Food, shelter, clothing. That's it as far as I'm concerned.

I've been the victim of a crime. They deserve nothing that will cause them to be unafraid to repeat the crime. They do not deserve any of life's comforts, goodness and tolerance. As Joe says, if they don't like it there, THEY can make sure they don't return.

They are treated so bad (that's a laugh).....perhaps we should send them to Iraq as Security Guards. But then they'd probably join the opposition instead of the opposition disposing of them for us. You who are so against Joe and come up with all these stories of abuse don't know the truth and jump on an empty bandwagon. No prisoners are truly "abused" except those who start the conflict.

Get real people. We NEED the days of dungeons and chains again. There wasn't as much crime back then. Punishment needs to be so uncomfortable that they NEVER want to do it again.

Ahhhh, John.........if only you knew what you were talking about. Unless you live in the Phoenix area and are fully aware of all Joe's political stunts, you can't possibly make a judgement call like you have done. This man is an egotistical madman, whose greatest efforts are to get his mug on TV as much as possible.

He and all his flunkie followers are totally corrupt! I have no objections to the color of the wardrobe that the inmates have to wear. Do you think the inmates really care if their undies are pink?? Unfortunately, these inmates are fighting every day of their confinement just to stay alive.

These inmates are beaten, abused, mistreated, denied essential medical care, and killed. I could cite you case after case of inmates that have died or are maimed for life because of the abuses they have suffered at his hand. The amount of money paid out in lawsuits is astronomical! Geez John.......get a clue!!

In NC, we have Sheriff Hege in Davidson County. He makes the inmates wear pink and blue jumpsuits and has teddy bears painted on the walls. He drives a hopped up Impala SS with a Black Widow spider painted on the hood. He hosted the show Cell Block H on Court TV.

Guess what? Nobody wants to go to his jail either. Like Jailhouse Joe out in NM, Hege maintains complete control over the inmates. The reason Maricopa inmates had tents to sleep in is because they burned down their jail thinking the state would build them a nicer one. Works in the cities when they don't get their way (remember the LA riots?).

Too bad it didn't work in Maricopa County. Sheriff Hege has very few return "guests" as I am sure is the case in Maricopa County. I notice all along the only people who think the inmates are getting the shaft are their families/friends and the bleeding hearts who think honest hardworking individuals are the problem, not the predators themselves.

I totally agree with the comments about the families being treated rudely by the personnel at the jails. Perhaps if a new administration is put into place in November, these inept idiots will go down the road with Joe! Remember to vote in November, and tell all your friends and family to vote in November. JOE MUST GO!!!

I was there in tent city when the woman fell off her bunk and died. The Dentention Officers where notified when she was ill, but they did not respond to the other inmates request for immediate help. After all it was summer and very hot, they dod not want to get there fat asses out of there chairs and out of the air conditioning.

Finally, when the inmate went into a seizure and fell off her bunk, they finally responded. But, it was to late. Sheriff Joe and staff should be sued. They are after all are responsible for all inmates, well being and health care.

Another time, there was a female detention officer who fell down some stairs and broke her leg, she got immediate help, she did not have to wait!!! Ambulances and paramedics where immediatley dispachecd to her aid!!! And look she gets worker's comp cause she was on the job!!

Sheriff Joe and staff you are SICK and all need some inpatient medical help!!!

Maybe people in Maricopa County don't like criminals or those that accoiate with criminals. Dont get me wrong I don't like his tactics either but if I wanted to do a crime I wouldn't pick his county to do it in. Maybe you should tell your friend to do his/her crimes in Page from now on so you wont be inconvienenced.
