Sweepstakes Clearinghouse sent me a Notice on yellow paper that looks official. Were I a moron, I might have followed their instructions stating I would win a Television Set if I merely sent $47.96 within 14 days for payment of Shipping and Handling. Sounds good doesn't it? A TV for less than 50 bucks.

That is until you consider the TV is actually a Black and White 5 inch television. Likely to recieve no reception. The Customer service rep said it was a Memorex, and the going rate for said memorex is 44 dollars. For a package that small it is around 10 dollars to ship so your truthfully paying nearly full price for the TV. But most TV's fitting the specs of our "Free Gift" you see a price of 15-20 dollars. With a 10 dollar shipping charge you are paying 35 dollars for "Handling". What is handling? Handling is anything the holding company wishes it to be.

Usually a sly way of charging you for free items. Anyway, This is a complete ripoff. Everything about Sweepstakes Clearinghouse seems to revolve around rip offs and scams. Anyway, I have read a small amount of Positive comments on them, some say they are good for buying things on layaway. But most say that they got ripped off in the process. Trust this company at your own risk.

My only issue

AUTHOR: Hellcat4lyferules - (USA)

I haven't ordered from them in awhile, but, in 2001 I ordered a laptop.  1. I read everything so I knew I was getting a refurbished laptop.  2. I knew it was old.   The laptop lasted until 2007. And even though it only had a 2 gig hdd.  It served it's purpose. The company let me make payments whenever I wanted.  And that was a big help.  When I got it, it barely had a scratch on it, and came with all of the software the literature said it would. And I didn't have one problem with their Customer Service reps (people always say those things when a company has rules to go by or their issue can't be helped).  My only issue was how long it took for me to get it, but, having lived in Hawaii at the time, I figured that's how long it probably should have taken.  As far as the old comps not being able to utilize the software of today, you work with what you can and get software that works on it, which can be found anywhere online.  I have seen used computers on ebay and amazon for ridiculous prices as well.  If you get mad at my opinion so be it, but, it's MY opinion and MY experience. Not everyone has to agree with some of you just because you had a bad one.  And, no I do not work for the company (I'm actually an IT tech in Alaska).  It's stupid to assume something like that just because others have had problems.  It's sad that some of you had issues with the company but, don't down or assume dumb things about others because they don't agree with you.

Demonica, read '297 complaints' carefully

AUTHOR: Jodi - (U.S.A.)

Sweepstakes Clearinghouse is a company that tells you that 'you are a winner', and they give you vouchers that claim to take hundreds of dollars off the retail price of 'their' merchandise. When in reality, the merchandise is worth less than what they are selling it to you.

This company takes advantage of people that may not know the quality of the items, if they ever receive an item. For instance, they are selling re worked Dell computers that are several years old, and will not run most of the software on shelves today. They are selling these computers and other products for double and triple what the item is worth. For you to claim " I've been a customer for 12 years" and " I love everything I've got" and " I know the letter you talking about..it clearly states..".

First off...the original post is from 2004. How can you possibly remember what the letter "clearly states"? Unless you are a troll from sweepstakes clearinghouse.

Secondly...You love everything you got? You love getting crap? Again, you are either a troll from this company, or you are not very smart. Third...You've been a customer for 12 years? How? I really want to know. This company claims to be for sweepstakes/prize winners. Demonica, do you really think it is not a 'rip off' to take advantage of naive people and make them think they are winners? Oh, I almost forgot, the state of Ill. has already won a judgment against sweepstakes clearinghouse for sending letters to people in that state claiming they are 'winners' when in reality, it's a scam! Evidently, thats illegal. I would love to know what you think about this company now, please respond! I would love to know if you're a troll or an idiot. This company has hurt and stolen from so many people. How can you defend them?

I have been a customer with sweepstakes over 12 years and I have loved everything I ordered. I know of the letter that you're talking about and it CLEARLY states that it is a 5.5 B/W telvevision. And they always give you a 30 day money back guarantee. And if it was damaged during shipping they will have it picked up and a new one shipped out.

So my advice to your commet is to READ CAREFULLY.

not employed by these rip-offs but have been in their warehouse

AUTHOR: Kenneth - (U.S.A.)

I am in the retail business of home and car electronics,I've lived in the Dallas area for
most of my life.In the course of me and my partner's day we visit several wholesalers for our products that we stock for our business. One day we came across this place and decided to go in to see if they had anything that we might want to carry.Well to our amazement most if not all the products these RIP-OFFS stocks have been out of production for many years, also most are refurbished items. Also it turns out that they yse one of the same suppliers that stocks NEW and refurbished items that we buy from.

So one day when I was placing our order I talked to my sales person that my company uses and he said the people at Clearinghouse sweepstakes place orders all the time for the refurbished items that they stock. Also if people will look at the items in the flyer that these people send out they are all old items that are no longer being sold in any store.Me and my partner have been privlaged to see some of the items in their warehouse and the ones that we looked at all have refurbished serial numbers.

Buyers beware of this company they are nothing but people out to scam the public of their hard earned money. And I love how they get their own employess to right in with high praise reports for them.

Rip-Off or not you decide.

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

I too, have just recieved a Sweepstakes Clearing house letter on winning "$400.00" off certain items. I am a specialist on computers and I for one see the computer systems that they are selling will not even run most current software packages on the shelf today. These systems are at least 5+ years old. To charge any more than $10 for either laptop or computer system is money wasted on something that doesn't work. A company that would try to take advantage of individuals who don't have knowledge of current systems, is very offensive to me. I don't know about the other products that people claim to be happy with, but if you check out the model of any equipment with the manufacture, you may find antiquated products that may not work with current technology.

N problems

AUTHOR: Terry - (U.S.A.)

I recently ordered an RCA stereo from the Sweepstakes Clearinghouse.

I thought the price was comparable to the large department store chains for the stereo alone and the one from SCH came with a cabinet to store all my music in as well!!

I recieved the stereo in excellent condition just two weeks after my check was sent.

I've had a good experience with this company and would not hesitate to order from in the future.

Don't know if any of your saw Dustins reply on http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/ripoff171953.htm but the both of us thank you. I too just recieved a letter regaurding a $37.96 TV. Bit in rebuttal to Jerry - Duvall, Washington entry, they caught on to you and apparently read your reply...the envelope is not YOUR responsibility as mine is NOT postage paid by them.

As to those that like these guys, did you know EXACTLY what you were getting when you paid for the item? Were you just simply browsing through a catalog and baught something or were you approached like we were, as a "winner" even though it really doesn't SAY "winner" on this letter (but the intention IS WINNER just by the use of the first sentences "congratulations", "request for action", "urgent", "non-transferable", "watermark" , voucher is only valid if signed by J. Johnston in BLUE ink, "Reserved item", "FINAL NOTICE" and check the check box if returning in 7 days on the envelope as well as their company NAME IS using "SWEEPSTAKES")? The only saving legal grace they have to fall on from this intent is a "RFA" seal that is printed on the page and around it says "Sales Notification". If I wanted to PAY about full price for something that has NO description other than "television set", I guess I really should go to a store instead of basically (for all intents and purposes here) BLIND MAIL ORDERING. It's the BLIND part that is actually the faudulence of this mailer. So upon this, I can only guess that Patty - Oak View, California and Melissa - Jersey City, New Jersey either WORK for them, simply MAIL ordered out of a catalog from them and KNEW what they were getting for the price they were paying, or your blind to what it was that you baught per actual value that you cold have gotten from a store from them if you replied to such a letter like ours.

FYI, I did reply to one of these type letters many years ago for a 7 piece luggage set for $20, and you know what I got. A 7 piece luggage set made out of nylon weave (like parachute pants) that if I saw what I was getting wouldn't have even bothered because I'd say it was worth only $20. If I still had the letter, and I distincly remember this, DID say "WINNER" on it...

I've Never Had Any Problems!

AUTHOR: Melissa - (U.S.A.)

I'm very surprised by the comments I have read on Sweepstakes Clearinghouse. I've been a customer since 1992 and couldn't be happier with the service provided.

In 1992, I purchased my first set of luggage from them and it is still in great condition. Any damage sustained was because I loaned one piece to someone, who decided to sit on it - causing the frame to bend slightly. If the person hadn't sat on it, it would be perfect.

In 2000, I purchased my 10-piece cookware set from them, which also came with a Cuisinart Mini-Food Processor and measuring cups/spoons. I received all items in a timely fashion and everthing still works according to its specifications. A friend of mine, who loves to cook and only buys the best in cookware, commented on the quality of the cookware I purchased - it was identical to what she had purchased at a substantially higher price.

I'm sorry to hear that all of you have had problems. The only thing I can say is - No company is perfect; every company has customers who have had bad experiences (including companies that have been in business since our grandparents were young)

I like their company!!

AUTHOR: Patty - (U.S.A.)

I am always amazed at the number of people who have had a bad experience with this company! Maybe I am just really blessed! I have bought several items from this company, including a Emerson TV set, an RCA VCR and a 4-poster bed ensemble. I have never had a problem with them, and as an example, the tv I bought from them 17 years ago still works like new! I just ordered a stereo from them as well. I am sorry that so many people seem to have a bad experience with this company. I really like them and I love their deals on top-quality merchandise!

Time for payback!

AUTHOR: Jerry - (U.S.A.)

Okay this company is a scam, we all know this. Now to put them out of business. Everyone that received one of these mailings should take the enclosed self addressed postage paid envelope that comes with the mailing and stuff it full of as much crap as you can. I managed to get 13 sheets of paper saying "Stop Ripping People Off" into the envelope :) Now just toss it back in the mail and let them pay the postage for your crap. They deserve a taste of their own medicine and everyone did this that company would loose millions of dollars in postage every year and eventually go bankrupt.

Sweepstakes Clearing atty general

AUTHOR: Suesan - (U.S.A.)

I was ripped off by this company as well. I think EVERYONE should write the attorney general's office of TX. I hope to get these crooks off the street. I thought about calling Dallas 911 and report major fraud. We have to stop this! We are not alone, I have seen my neighbors, and friends that have received their mail in all states, can you imagine the monies they have stole?
