I received a letter in the mail requesting my social security number and my signiture. The letter said I was denied a credit card from Synchrony Bank due to the fact that I did not fill out my Social Security Number.
1. I never requested a credit card from this bank.
2. I haven't requested a credit card from any bank recently.
3. The letter itself looked shady
4. There was no phone number to call.
5. I don't live in Florida nor have I been there recently.
This could be one of several possibilities.
This could be the way this shady bank does business? Maybe they send out a lame letter saying you were denied a credit card in hopes that you fill out the form and mail it back to get one? Or This could be a phishing scam to get your personal information. Either way this isn't the way a reputable bank would conduct business.
NEVER EVER Send your personal info in a letter to someone one or some place you've never heard of. NO BRAINER!

To the first responder.
I apologize but I was running short on time yesterday that's why I did not list many other possible things that this could be.
You are correct in the fact that yes this could be someone tyring to use their name to obtain a Social Security number but the address associated with the letter I received is theirs! (I did not know this at the time) So that would rule that out.
You are also correct in the fact that it could be someone trying to get a card in my name but why would Synchrony bank then send a very poor looking document with no phone number and no other information on it other than please fill out your SOS # and mail this back. No return envolope, no phone number etc.
I also reported this to the post office as I thought that a po box was a strange address too. I acted a little hasty in the fact that I just wanted to let others know what was happening so they didn't get taken advantage of.
I appreciate your advice and I'm more than willing to remove this when and if I figure this out.
To the second reply.
Your a moron. I've never had an account with these guys. If I was bitching about money owed or accounts etc. I would have said something to that effect.
Legal action? Again! Moron! I stated factual information of which I have hard proff of! I didn't make anything up, I didn't slander or lye. I stated facts!

So you get this letter and instantly think of a several of possibilities. But only list two...Really ONLY two?
I guess when you get a letter from "Bill Gates" saying you won 5.4 Million dollars in the Internet lottery and all you need to do is send them your SSN and $200 to handle the "taxes" you instantly come here and write a RipOff report on how Microsoft is phishing for your Identity.
Seriously, sometimes reports like this make me want to reach out through cyberspace and smack someone upside the head. So instead of that let me give you a couple of other possibilities.
Possibility 1 - Someone used your information to TRY and obtain a credit card in your name and it did not match the records so Synchrony is asking you to verify the information and that you actually did apply. In this case they actually KEPT you from becoming an Identity Theft Victim.
Possibility 2 - Someone using the Synchrony name is phishing for information. You didn't specify how they wanted it back but having you mail it is a bit off, most of these attempts are done through having you visit a "fake" but often convincing duplicate site of the company where you enter all of your information. In this case the best thing to do is take the letter and send it to the circular file. You could also verify the address they are requesting you to send it to to see if it is actually their address or a different address. If it is the creditors address then Possibility 1 is a very likely situation.
Now if it is the former where someone actually tried to open a credit card in your name you better actually act quickly or you may find yourself a true victim of ID Theft. First, pull ALL of your credit reports to make sure that everything on there is yours. If you are seeing hard inquiries, or worse actual accounts. That you don't know about you need to dispute them.
You also need to go to your local law enforcement agency and fill out an ID Theft report. Take that report and request a FREE Fraud Alert be placed on your credit report(if you are getting charged for the Fraud Alert you aren't talking to the credit bureaus). This will REQUIRE creditors to perform additional verification steps before they approve a credit request.
This bank is perhaps one of the biggest(if not the biggest) issuer of "store branded" credit cards. So it is possible you have never heard of them, but unlikely. As such a report like this almost makes me wonder if there is more to the story. Such as if you had credit cards with them in the past how delinquent did you get or at what point did you no longer feel that the terms you agreed to should apply to you.

Probable False Report

It is very interesting how you immediately focus on blaming this legitimate business. Their sector of business is heavily regulated so that rules out your BOGUS claims. They aren't going to risk their business by doing such things. No doubt you're here just to defame them because they took legal action against you or are about to because you haven't paid your bills on time and they do represent many credit card companies. Synchrony, if you're eavesdropping here, run this report past your legal department. At first glance, it would appear there's ample evidence here for legal action against this individual.
