I had Tanner Transmission replace my transmission in my 2002 Ford Escape last November/December. On a trip in July to St. George, UT, the OD/Off light started flashing. I called the Tanner location and talked to Matt. He told me to get the car to them.

I brought the car in on Saturday. They kept my car for exactly nine (9) weeks. I was repeatedly told it would be done, but it never was. I also noticed that my car sat in their back lot with the windows down for three weeks. It was raining at the time. My seats have stains now.

I was repeatedly told that a Ford Escape was a hard transmission to fix. (What does it have - a Formula 1 racing transmission?) At the end of nine weeks, with me constantly complaining after about 6 weeks, I got the car back. We drove it a total of 35 miles and the same thing happened again.

I ended up having to take it back in to Tanner to get fixed. They whined that I didn't bring back in the warranty. It had only been a week!! Tanner Transmission, this time, had my car for another 4 weeks and 4 days for a total of 13 weeks and 4 days.

When they had my car for 2 weeks this time, I contacted ATRA. At the time I contacted ATRA, they had said that my transmission needed a solenoid, and were going to put one in and drive it to my house. The day they received their letter from ATRA, that changed from a solenoid to a deeper overhaul. My car was taken to the 1800 So. State location because "they don't know how to fix this at the Redwood location" - according to Jim at 1800 south.

I wrote a letter to Jim and Blaine Tanner telling them of my displeasure at the service that I had received from their company, and telling them they should extend my warranty to a lifetime warranty and also pay me for having to use a company car. These men did not have the common courtesy to even appologize for my inconvenience. I know they received my letter, because I sent it certified, and Jim Tanner signed for it.

If you have any problems "WHATSOEVER" with Tanner Transmission, contact ATRA immediately. ATRA will give them exactly 15 days to fix the situation. (we got our car back on the morning of the 15th day) Also, tell as many people as you can not to go to Tanner Transmission for any reason. This company does not know how to treat their customers. Unfortunately, Tanner has forgotten that it is the customer that keeps them in business. If the customers go away, so does their business.

How the scam works

AUTHOR: Mark - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, February 06, 2007

Tanner Transmissions has a long history of ripping off consumers with their transmission purchases. They will get an "inspection fee" to open up your transmission. They won't give you a price for your repair upfront, they will just get the inspection fee, usually around $500.00.

Then the fun begins, the hook is in the mouth. They will then ship the transmission off to their build center where they will produce a estimate with lots of very expensive parts, most of these parts never make it in your transmission. The customer then is forced to pay $500.00 or accept the estimate that the crooks come up with.

They say they are an Atra shop in the phone book and on their doors but they won't give the customers a Atra warranty unless you pay extra for a lifetime warranty. Then the customer transmission breaks down in another state and they leave the customer hanging.

My buddies transmission failed 3 days later in California and these guys wouln't give them the time of day. These people, Blaine Tanner, Jim Tanner have hearts of coal, they don't care about customer service, they are nice to the customer until they get your money then their true colors shine thru.

The people that build their transmission are completly incompetant. They can't build most manual transmissions and most foreign automatics to save their lives, they just call a junkyard and sell a $200.00 junk transmission to customers for a couple thousand dollars.

They advertise the "power flush" just to get the customer in the door. Then they tell customer that they need to rebuild the transmisson even if the transmission works fine on the road test. Shut these crooks down and don't fall in the trap set by these people born without morales.

I agree with Steve...

I see lots of reports on here, usually with transmission repairs, where people say the shop has kept thier vehicle for weeks, or even months. I also don't understand why anyone would let it go that far, it's crazy to think it would take that long.

I don't think those Escapes have been around that long, maybe 8 years? They probably just aren't that knowledgable with those transmissions. Most cars are under warranty for 4 years right? (I've never had a new car) So it is probably pretty recently that they have needed to have the transmissions rebuilt. I would guess the dealership would still be the place to go.
Anyhow, I was just adding on to the thought that they were not very experienced, at least on these vehicles, and in which case they should have told you before they agreed to work on it.

Small claims sounds like a good idea to me...

Small claims court may be your only option

As long as you have everything documented and have pictures, etc. Like the windows being left down and the stains on the seats, and the odometer mileage when you dropped it off.

I would have never let it go that long myself. After 2-3 days someone would have to have a good explanation.

This was obviously a simple repair for an experienced and competent mechanic.

Sounds like "inbreeding gone wild" is the problem at that location. Take them to court.

Here's a real kicker!!

Not only did Tanner Transmission have my car for a total of 13 weeks and 4 days, but they used 2/3 of a tank of gas and drove my car about 150 miles. I guess they needed to keep it that long so they could have it for their own use. I had filled the tank the morning that the transmission went back out, and I know what the mileage was before they had it again. I would like reimbursment for that at least!!
