Taxact advertises itself as one of the websites that will let you file your federal and state tax returns for free if you qualify. Once you give them enough information to qualify, they send you through their interview and have you enter all your tax information.

A friend of mine has a very simple return (Single, no dependants, no deductions, no credits, no investment income, just two W-2's and unemployment). When she got to the very end of the interview and was ready to file, Taxact said that the free edition of Taxact doesn't support unemployment income, so she would have to upgrade and pay $29.95 to file.

Not surprisingly, she used a different service to file for free. But, nonetheless Taxact was a waste of time. Don't waste your time too.
