I rented a car at the Thrifty Rental Car in Vero Beach Florida, for a week; which was booked on-line through Orbitz.

The price quoted - after taxes and fees - was $244 - BUT - when I arrived - was $304.99. I had no choice but to take the car; as I was dropped off at the location - which was in a strip mall. I assumed the price was an error - or unadjusted to the on-line price.

Upon returning the car, I found out that this particular THRIFTY charges an ADDITIONAL $6.75 a day - flat fee - for a "concession charge" - another $1.49 per day and a "vehical license fee at $0.57 - bringing the $213.99 rental to $305.99 - that's 45% in taxes and fees! And an additional 25% over the guaranteed price!!!What's more; since these are flat fees - and non-adjusted fees (such as percentages, etc.) - they were legally obligated to inc

Then, to make matters worse; the employee at this location COULDN'T TELL ME WHAT THE FEES MEANT - or what they were for. Just the names of them.

Then, I contacted Orbitz. The first two employees who attempted to contact this location where hung up on - One girl from Orbitz was intentionally disconnected three times alone.

However; Orbitz stayed on top of things - and at this time - Thrifty headquarters say they are mailing a check to me for the difference; which should go out within 5-7 business days. No word on if the local location ever actually answered/took responsibility.

Here's hoping the check comes!

And if you book a rental car on-line through an agent or third party source - and it's a Thrifty - be very weary of deceptive pricing; additional (unexplainable fees) and criminal tactics. Who wants to be dropped off at a rental location; only to find that they HAVE to take the car at a different price - or are stranded??

***UPDATED RESPONSE******

AUTHOR: Michael - (U.S.A.)

******UPDATED*******

Again; to everyone - if you're thinking of renting here - please don't. Look at the employee's response - calling me "Bub".

Now; Orbitz did mail me a check for the difference in return; admitting what Thrifty had done is misleading (they said that if they continued to do so that Thrifty would be removed from the site - again - the price quoted for the total with taxes and fees SHOULD at least be close). So - to the employee  who just posted - how was I in the wrong? And are you all so rude their? I felt terrible for the Orbitz employees (who were more than polite). Again - the $244 quoted included more than 20% in taxes/fees etc (the original price without such fees/taxes was $30.50 a day - or $213.99 for the week). In the end, you guys charged $15 a day in taxes and fees. Heck; on the average last-minute $40 a day rental; I usually pay about $7-$8 in taxes. What you're doing is robbery.

And; considering most people use Priceline, Travelocity, etc. to rent a car (I rent about 40 a year or more - as I work on the road)...Again - this is misleading. Obviously; when I rented a car locally last week - it wasn't at Thrifty!

Again; the price advertised WAS supposed to include taxes and fees (or be darn close!!!!). When you book on a third party site (which you are so against); they give you an estimate the total price should be within 10% for such fees.

For instance; I just now use Budget and Entertprise. Both are always accurate (and DON'T charge 30% in unadvertised fees on top of the taxes!!!!!). In the end, It would have been cheaper for me to rent this particular car in town at an additional $10 a day for the week - then to drive to Thrifty to find out it's a Bait and Switch on the pricing (yeah - the car's $25 a day - but it's actually close to $50 after the 'concession fee', etc. that's not disclosed until you arrive).

Again; unless they've changed their ways - be careful. Despite being the lowest advertised price; you could find yourself paying in the end.

Just rent from somewhere that's honest and QUOTES a real price? If it's $40 a day on-line for the bast price; expect to pay $48 or so after the taxes, etc...But - don't pay $65 (if you took the insurance at this location - you'd be at about $90 a day!!!).

What makes you think that you should not have to pay the taxes and fees that all other renters- with ALL companies- must pay?  Your base rate was not including taxes. Had you booked on Thrifty's official site, it would have shown that base rate, and then the estimated final charges which would include all taxes and fees- which are mandatory across the board.  Instead you booked on a third party website, which you claim was "on top of things" even though your reservation with them didn't include all the taxes yet.
