As a certified energy auditor who has extensivly studied the subject, I can assure you that there is no insulation that will provide an R-20 insulation value in a 2 x 4 wall cavity. The best faom available is polyurethane which can achieve up to a value of R-6 per inch, but that is not the kind of foam that can be used in closed wall cavities.

The type of foam USA Insulation uses can provide a maximum value of R-3.66 per inch. Simple math reveals that the maximum R value in a 3.5 inch cavity would then be R-12.81. Effective wall R value is even less than this because over 9% of the entire wall that has studs on 16-inch centers is wood, and wood has a much lower R-value per inch (about 1.25). Come on, USA Insulation, get real!

As am employee of USA insulation I can tell you that we have tens of thousands of satisfied customers. We have been in business since 1985. I have had customers that used laser thermometers and read temps before and after with incredible results. One customers walls went from 32 degrees to 68!!!! And that was the temp set on his thermostat

USA Insulation R-Value - Rebuttal

AUTHOR: Usa Insulation - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, June 04, 2009

I would like to clear up any misconceptions that were posted by Brian from Cuyahoga Falls.

USA Insulation has been using a proprietary insulation product and serviced the public for over 25 years and 25,000 homes. Since we are the only distributor and installer of this particular product, possibly Brian does not have access to our information. Our foam is tested to ASTM C-177 industry standards by an Independent Laboratory. Those repeated tests show the R-Value of USA Premium Foam to be 5.13 per inch at 72 degrees Fahrenheit (and an R-Value of 5.3 below 32 degrees). This is the best R-Value in the Retrofit Market.

The correct calculations for USA Insulation foam are:

In a true 2x4, 4-inch cavity (homes built before the 1930's), USA Premium Foam injected into a closed cavity will achieve an R-Value of 20.52.

In a modern 2x4, or 3.5 inch cavity (homes built after 1920's), USA Premium Foam injected into a closed cavity will achieve an R-Value of 17.95, far greater than the 12.81 Brian has calculated.

In addition, these R-values do not include the additional R-Value of the Wall Composition (Exterior facade, sheeting, drywall, air film, etc.) which can vary from 2-5 additional R's. I understand that 9% of the wall is wood studs that is not able to be insulated. This is the same for any type of insulation used.

Since we have never spoken with Brian we have no idea what information source he has used. At USA, we rely on a certified laboratory for our scientific testing and data and, most importantly, the thousands of very happy and satisfied customers, 30% of whom refer us to their friends and neighbors. Brian may be using data for loose blown insulation: Cellulose, Rockwool or Fiberglass. Whatever the source may be, it obviously does not include the USA Insulation product.

We are certain you realize not everything one reads on the web is fact. If you would like to know more about how USA Insulation installed in your home will impact energy consumption and your level of comfort, we are happy to discuss your specific situation with you directly.
