Vonage is a master at misrepresentation of a service. I contacted an order taker to sign up for their phone/Internet service. I had the order taker check to see if my home phone number was available so I could keep this number. She put me on hold and told me she would check. She came back to me with great news it was available. I said are you sure it is? She yes it is!
I received the router connected it and then tried a cell phone to call my number and it would go through? I contacted Vontage Customer Service which took 30 minutes on hold. Once I made it to a live person they said it is NOT available which in all honesty met I was lied to by the ordertake. After this and a route which stopped working after a few days they told me it would cost $109.00 to cancel my account.
Can you say RIP-OFF!! Lied to in the beginning about my number being avaiable. They have my credit card info so I'm sure they will charge me one way of another. Thought about canceling this credit card!

Number Transfer from your telco isn't usually that fast
AUTHOR: Dave - (Canada)

When I signed up for Vonage, I had to fill out a notice to send to my Telco to have them release my current number.
Vonage gave me a virtual number to use in the meantime while waiting for my Telco (not Vonage) to transfer the number.
The first guy probably just looked up the area code to tell you that the number *could* be used by Vonage, once transferred. The second guy probably looked in the list of currently available numbers and didn't see it.
Since they want a cancellation fee, you might want to hang on to your Vonage account to see if your old number does transfer over.
Alternatively, contact your telco and make sure that they know you are revoking any authorization for Vonage to take that number. Because they might do that do you as well, then you'd be even worse off.
