Entered the store this morning around 9:30am- a 20lb bag of salt is listed as $24.99 and an 8lb shaker of salt is listed as $14.99.  This is complete price gouging due to the severe weather we have had over the last week.  Shame on ACE hardware- I will never shop there again.

Gouging

AUTHOR: xbott - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 20, 2012

My comment is not about the salt, just a comparison to comments made. I shopped all over for a 240 volt 30 amp plug and socket. I shopped at Lowe's and Home Depot. They both had just the plug at 38 dollars plus change. They were out of the socket which was even more. I didn't buy from either because I knew they had to be cheaper elsewhere.

By chance I had to stop at ACE for some bird seed, cheapest place around. While there I remembered about the plug so checked to see if they had it. They did, two of them and I bought both at 21 dollars each plus change. They ordered the mating socket for 24 dollars plus change.

Talk about gouging, what does this look like and who is doing it? I got twice the merchandise at ACE for the price of one at their competitors. I do believe that people do gouge but do not believe that ACE is one of them. I have always been treated quite well at ACE and will continue to shop there. If they don't have it they can get it for you.

I actually really appreciate your explanation- however, I did go to Lowes and Walmart- and they had 50lb bags of salt available for under $10- less then 1/2 of what ACE was charging for a 20lb bag.  I would suggest that ACE change their supplier ASAP.

My advice to ACE would be in situations like these not to raise prices to make a profit on the salt- but to keep their prices down b/c chances are people aren't just going to come in for salt- they will buy other things while in the store.  ACE is overpriced on everything (at least the one in my town is) but their store is closer then driving to the Lowes- but this experience has made it so I no longer want to shop in that store for anything- and will now drive the extra 10 miles to LOWES.

Still shame on ACE for passing this price gouging on to their customers.

Price Gouging at Supplier

AUTHOR: greeneguy - (United States of America)

POSTED: Friday, February 12, 2010

We at Ace are really sorry that this happened to you.  I do not work at the Ace Hardware in your town (but have to be careful not to reply to you as an employee, they check this site), but just wanted to let you know that upper management knew that this might be an unusually harsh winter (Poor Richard's Almanac) and ordered a big supply to have enough on hand.  Unfortunately when we placed the order, our supplier saw fit to gouge us on price and would not give us the bulk discount we had enjoyed in the past. I have had several heated discussions with our supplier (same one for all of Ace Hardware) and he gave the usual excuses of shortage of labor, salt mine strikes (Latinos demanding higher pay), transporation costs (diesel went up) bla de bla. So in the end, we had to shut up and pay the bill and then had to raise our prices to be able to make some sort of profit.  It is always the consumer who pays the ultimate price and for this we apologize.  I would tell you to check Home Depot and Lowes, but I suspect that they are having to raise their prices as well.
