I was issued a credit card by MBNA, which was bought out by Bank of America.

I had made a purchase that exceeded my credit limit ( they allowed it to be exceeded by over $2,000 in one purchase!) Now, I am being socked a $39 over limit charge on each statement until the balance is below my credit limit.

I have never heard of such a thing, one time charge yes, be each and every statement??

Anybody else heard of this crap?

Blaming the government?

AUTHOR: Mike - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, July 19, 2007

John are you seriously blaming the government and the credit card company and not the person who didn't know what their balance was, or how credit cards work? What did he "need" that he had to get something worth $2000??

While I agree that the companies shouldn't allow someone to go over their limit, I also don't belioeve they allowed him to go $2,000 over either. I've heard of comapnies giving a little leeway so that you can buy what you wanted, but never that much.

Yes They Can....

============
Welcome to America, circa 2007...where the Congress and the US Presidency is bought and paid for by big business interests...the credit card/finance industries in particular. MBNA was GW Bush's biggest campaign contributor...even more so that the oil companies.... Remember how nice those "get the government off our backs " slogans sounded? ...Government "on our backs" was consumer legislation like usury laws and other laws to prohibit extortion late fees like you're getting...What this slogan really meant was getting the government off the backs of big businesses to do as they please. [End of political rant]

They allowed you to go over your limit to get you in a trap. They are entitled to keep charging you this $39 fee until you drop down over the limit. If you have the funds...pay it down....If you don't but you have balance transfer options available on another card for $2,000...do a balance transfer. Otherwise, you're stuck.

WHY?

AUTHOR: Cory - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, July 18, 2007

Why would YOU buy something that exceeded your credit limit by over $2,000 in one purchase? I like the one purchase part. Is the bank your mother? Do you not bear ANY responsibilty towards this purchase? Lord, you're the one that bought the item. The bank didn't put a gun to your head and make you buy the $2,000 over your credit limit item. You sound like one of my 16 year old grandkids. He's $2,000 over his limit and he whining about a $39 over the limit fee. I suspect he's got alot more to worry about then the $39. And yes, I've heard about that crap. It's in your statement and terms. By the way, what did you get for the $2,000 over the limit?

Overlimit fees

AUTHOR: Mike - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, July 18, 2007

Yes, this is how over the limit fees work, it's not like a bounced check fee. Let me explain:

EXAMPLE: You have a credit card with a $1,000 limit

January balance - $1,100 - Overlimit fee of $39 for January
February Balance - $1,139 - STILL over your limit for February, $39
March Balance $1,050 - STILL over your limit for March, $39

And so on and so on. IF you are over your limit, you're over your limit
