OK, so I went to Big Bucks Auto, WHAT A RIP OFF! I called them prior to going, gave them ALL the information about my car, including 5 speed manual tranny, and no power windows or door lock. They said I could expect between 5000 to 6500 for the truck. When I went there, the told me my car was worth 4 grand less then they said on the phone. They then said that they never gave me that quote.
STAY AWAY FROM THESE CROOKS!

I think I see the problem

It appears that this dealer is using the word "quote" when he should be using the word "estimate". I suggest the dealer look up the word "quote" and perhaps adjust his pitch accordingly. A "quote" that can vary by 60% - 80% (as it did in the OP's case) is not much of a quote. Hell, it's not even much of an estimate.

It's common practice for a car lot to give an inflated "quote" over the phone in order to entice a trade-in customer to their lot. Assuming that there were no serious problems with the vehicle (like a crumpled body or the engine falling out), it's just not plausible that an experienced dealer could be off by that much.

It's impossible to put a price on something sight unseen..

Hi J,

We are very sorry that you did not have a positive experience with us recently. In all businesses, unfortunately, that sometimes happens. Though we strive to satisfy our customers, nothing is perfect 100% of the time.

I am sure that you can imagine that provide a quote to purchase a vehicle is not an easy task as we must rely on the information provided by the very people who obviously would like as much money as possible. Giving someone a verbal quote on an automobile sight unseen is really not possible in for that reason. We provide the quote as a rough starting point for you to gauge whether or not you would like to bring your vehicle in for an offer. As your experience is a prime example of how that does not always work out in the best way.

Since we are a busy environment with many employees, we really do prefer to give our potential customers a written quote though the email service we set up on our website. At least this way we can both show you the possible areas where the quote and the offer might differ and also, we can then track who provided a quote so far off so we can better hone their skills and avoid this kind of situation again. The fact that you called and received a verbal quote did not allow us to accurately track the error in your case.

The bottom line though, is that we are the business of buying used cars and a quote is just that: a quote. When a customer brings in the car and we can inspect it, then we are able to give you a firm offer. With current market conditions your truck was worth to us the offer that we offered you. We can compare that to the recent crisis in the housing market. So many folks own homes that they really believe are worth more than they are, but they can't sell them for what they want because the market cannot bare the price. That you were disappointed is 100% understandable, but we still cannot pay you for more than you vehicle is worth or we would quickly be out of business. And honestly, we WANT to buy your car. We really do. We don't make any money from turning folks like you away, so that is the last of our desired outcome

We cannot be crooks because we did not take anything from you. We both invested time and unfortunately, we could not reach agreeable terms on the deal. Honestly, we WANTED to buy your car. We really did. We don't make any money from turning folks like you away, so that is the last of our desired outcome.

Again, we are sorry that it didn't work out to benefit us all. The majority of the time, we do not experience these issues and our customers find our car buying services to be easier and more profitable than traditional methods.
