This guy ripped me off. He charged me $230 (with tax) for a part that costs under $ 70 at online stores and under $90 at the retailer's. When I asked him to replace the part with one that I bought from the store, he refused, saying that he will not take the part back unless there is something wrong with it. He also refused to show me the receipt for the part that he charged me $230. And then he says that he is allowed to make profit on the part, still refusing to show the receipt or how much he paid for it.

The part is now used

AUTHOR: Tech1 - (U.S.A.)

Now the part is used no one would take the part back. You failed to say what part and is it the very same part he may have gone to a better quality. What did he charge for labor? it that in the 230?

Common practice.

Auto repair shops usually have a high markup on parts 100% - 150% is not unusual.   It's how they pay the rent and keep the lights on.

"And then he says that he is allowed to make profit on the part, still refusing to show the receipt or how much he paid for it. "

Suppose you went to a restaurant and bought a steak dinner.  If you subsequently thought the price was too high, would you start demanding that the owner show you how much he paid for the steak?   Do you really think any merchant would do this?

Bottom line, it's none of your business what a merchant pays for goods.   You do not get to determine how much profit he/she makes.     All you need to do is ask how much it will cost.  If you think the cost is high, you are free to take your business elsewhere.    In this case, you should have bought the part online for $70 and installed it yourself.   Why bother an auto repair shop when you already have this all figured out?

A couple things

AUTHOR: Ramjet - (U.S.A.)

Does any store tell you what they pay for their merchandise?  Of course not, that's their business, not yours unless they decide to tell you.

Then to actually expect them to install a part that you bought yourself?  I can't even imagine anyone doing that.  They are going to use parts they are familiar with from a vendor they are familiar with and feel comfortable supporting.  Installing someone elses part could cause all kinds of problems.  I would never even consider expecting them to do that.

He is absolutely correct that he should expect to make a profit and it's none of your business how much.

You should buy the part and install it yourself if you don't expect anyone to make a profit or take the car somewhere else.

No ripoff here.

I am not defending this place, dont even live in the same state, but I wonder... Does the $230 include labor.
