March 24, 2006, my husband bought me a $2,000 cavalier from Mary Madaan in Spring, TX. My husband has since died of cancer and my cavalier was his last birthday present to me.

I have,on several occasions, requested that the AKC papers be furnished to me but have gotten no response from Ms. Madaan.

Why would Ms. Madaan withhold the papers for a very expensive dog? I feel I am owed the papers firstly and I am totally confused as to why Ms. Madaan does not provide them.

Is there any recourse?

#3 Consumer Suggestion

I wonder why....

AUTHOR: Debbie - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, December 18, 2007

I'm continually amazed by the number of people that buy "AKC registered" puppies, and then walk away without making sure they have the papers in their possession. Any reputable breeder would hand over the puppy and the papers at the same time. While reading the different posts on here, I see over and over again how a breeder will say they will "send them later" for whatever reason. There is absolutely NO reason that a breeder cannot give you the papers right then and there.

You ask why she would withhold papers? Probably because she doesn't have them. A dog with AKC papers will fetch a much higher price than a dog without them. Doesn't make a bit of difference in the dog, its still the same dog, its just that people want those papers.

I'd definitely look into legal action with this one. Good luck to you.

As you are in Texas you can sue under the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act

AUTHOR: Mary - (U.S.A.)

Sorry to hear about your husband.

Keep all of your papers and see an attorney ASAP. You may be entitled to damages under the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act. I am having a similar problem with another breeder.

There is recourse in Texas and the law has some pretty good teeth to it, so I suggest you follow up with Counsel.

I am not an attorney but am trying to obtain papers on a dog that I have had for over 15 months and still no papers.

Good Luck, and don't give up!

I paid for a Basenji from Meisterhaus basenjis for $1500.00US and I had no luck getting the papers or the dog. The AKC has to do something with problem Breeders . Did you send her a copy of this website? that might do it
