Tuk Tuk Drivers Anywhere in Phuket:

Whenever possible, avoid getting a tuk tuk, as the drivers of these little taxis charge ridiculously high prices for all of their fares. Just getting a ride through Patong can cost you 400 to 500 Baht, which is half of what it costs to get a taxi all the way from the airport that is an hour away and costs 600 Baht.

The tuk tuk drivers have been known on rare occasions to try and extort more money out of tourists if the tourist is alone or drunk, so you need to be careful of this. Avoid them if you can and always try to get a proper registered taxi which is organized through your hotel if possible.

WAVING down a cab

Man, I sure wouldn't want to be caught in nothing called a Tuk Tuk when the next tsunami hits Phuket.
Phuk that s@#t!
Another good suggestion for all the Phukers out there. Make sure your room is on at least the 3rd floor, and sleep with life vests on.
Anyone vacationing in such a place has to be bahtty.
Go ahead TOJW, rate me unhelpful 4 times now.

I agree. And to add on top of this, it happens anywhere in Thailand (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, etc.). Tourists need to be ware and cautious about who they are using the service. Also, if you are catching a casual ride (not to the airport), don't get on a taxi cap that has the meter off because the cap is the same as Tuk Tuk (attempt to jack the price by negotiating instead).
