In May 2008 a hyundai accent was rented and driven back to missouri from dallas texas. The car suffered hail damage during the trip.

In addition to the $1,779.61 for the damage and $250 for administrative fees, I was invoiced for $400 loss of use, and $884 for diminution of value.

GEICO and VISA paid the $1779.61 as wellk as the $250 administrative which is excessive.
I was told if I did not pay the additional $884 and the $400 I would turned over to a collection agent, in turn ruining my credit.

I have since sent them $20 and $50.

#2 Consumer Suggestion

DO NOT PAY SUBROGATION MGMT TEAM!!!!!

No matter what you do...do not pay them a single cent. They are rip off scam artists and will hound you until they scare you into paying! I WAS THE VICTIM TWO YEARS AGO. They filed a report with a credit bureau, until I threatened to sue them, and filed a complaint with the state of Texas, and any other state where they sell your acccount for collection. BEWARE...they will try to scare you, but send a letter by certified mail and tell them to stop harassing you and tell them to remove it from your credit report. They thrive on customers who are uninformed and scared. Don't be one of them. They will eventually back down.

Insurance should pay.

Since you mentioned Geico, I'm assuming that you have auto insurance through them that covers rental cars. I'm wondering why Geico is only paying for the damage repair and not the other charges that you are liable for. Both loss of use and diminution of value are valid. The first because they couldn't rent the car until it was repaired, the second because the car's damage history will affect its resale value. I wouldn't blame the rental compay for charging them. I would ask Geico why/how those charges are specifically excluded. I don't personally have Geico, but my auto insurance coverage for rental cars covers my entire liabilty for damages(excluding the deductable). It does not specifically exclude loss of use or diminution of value. If it's not specifically excluded in your policy, the insurance company should pay it.
