Ripoff Report Verified™ REVIEW

EDitor's UPDATE: Positive rating and recognition has been given to A Forever Recovery for its full commitment to quality customer service.

Ripoff Report's discussions with A Forever Recovery have uncovered an ongoing dedication by the company to total client satisfaction. This means that clients can expect that the company will work towards finding a mutually satisfactory resolution to any concerns. A Forever Recovery listens carefully to client concerns and sees them as an opportunity to learn from past mistakes and become more efficient as a company in the services offered and the support for those services.

One pitfall of drug and alcohol treatment is that recovery can be incomplete, or not last long enough to achieve a result for the client. A Forever Recovery offers several different services as a part of its drug and alcohol rehab. Some of these include:

Statistically speaking, there is something to be said for the degree and the level of rehabilitative services that a recovering addict receives. For example, clients who receive further treatment (four to twelve weeks of treatment) after completing detox were up to 10 times less likely to relapse while those who were just completing a detox (five to seven days of care only) relapsed at rates between 65 and 80 percent. What this means is that detox combined with actual rehab is exponentially more effective than just a detox. A Forever Recovery offers a longer treatment program to help reduce relapse risk for patients.

What is truly exceptional about AFR is that this treatment center applies an excellent detox, a thrilling rehabilitation program, and an extensive and involved aftercare program, effectively covering all bases to ensure that clients have the best chance that they can get of winning the battle against drug and alcohol addiction once and for all.

The information provided in this report below is based on comments made by Stephanie Woodhams during an onsite inspection held by a third party verification company with no biases towards A Forever Recovery.

A Forever Recovery is a substance abuse program that uses a Holistic approach of mind, body, spirit, and empowerment through choice. Stephanie Woodhams stated the following about her company, "we have a medical model and our program is evidence based. Our clients all have certified counselors and licensed counselors that develop treatment goals with them and those are changed and revised throughout the program. The client gets a treatment team that consists of a counselor, MRT moral recognition therapy, facilitator, case manager, and an aftercare specialist. We do believe their discharge planning should begin at the beginning of the program. Our aftercare program lasts for 1 year. It enables us to have at least 1 year of statistics on success, relapse, slips, things like that." The methods utilized by A Forever Recovery have a high success rate for recovery and most clients return immediately to the workforce.

Leads for A Forever Recovery for primarily obtained through online marketing and referrals from past clients. They also utilize third party referral sources. The typical sales process for A Forever Recovery consists of the client or the client's family reaching out to see if there is a bed available at their facility. From there the appropriate method of treatment and insurance coverage is assessed.

CUSTOMER CARE & COMPLAINT RESOLUTION – A FOREVER RECOVERY

During the on-site interview, Ms. Woodhams was asked to describe a situation where a client was not satisfied with the level of service they received. Ms. Woodhams expressed that their most common complaint arises because the client's family is forcing them into treatment. She further explained, "coming to a treatment facility does not guarantee someone's sobriety. Family and loved ones expect us to say yes, they've gone through a 30 or 60-day treatment and they will be fine. They’ll come home and be sober. Of course, that doesn't always happen. Addiction is a very difficult disease to conquer. It requires a lifelong commitment. It is not just an inpatient rehab." In order to remedy complaints like this, "we do provide the tools and if a person makes the choice to use them they will be successful. Our clients do have an excellent success rate."

When asked to comment on complaints posted on Ripoff Report's website Ms. Woodhames stated the following, "there are several comments on the website of Ripoff Report. Most of them are from many years ago, I have been the executive director since we opened and I am familiar with them all. A Forever Recovery took over the building and there was a rental agreement for a building that use to house a Narcanon program which is based on Scientology. A Forever Recovery is not and never has been nor any elements of Scientology in our program whatsoever. We are also not a program named Best Drug Rehabilitation or Best Drug Rehabilitation. There are several reports that claim we are the same thing. Of course, without AFR'S pictures but with BDR'S picture. We do not scam to hurt people and the nurses never put drugs into stock medication. Most of the Ripoff Report reports are completely erroneous and I would love to have them removed." She also offered the following rebuttal, "my name is Stephanie Woodhams I have worked on staff since 2009 and in an attempt to see what some of the complaints where I did come across a report that had erroneous information. I was familiar with some of the circumstances but it been distorted and exaggerated. There was a line at the bottom that said if you don't believe me you can call me and when I called it was another treatment center. So, I thought that was pretty scandalous and malicious trying to use false information against us and trying to market to the website as a marketing tool." A Forever Recovery is licensed by the State of Michigan and is CARP accredited.

When asked what type of changes they have made to honor their commitment to making things right with the consumer per the request of Ripoff Report, Ms. Woodhams stated, "we have a lot of checks and balances in place with regard to staff and clients. I personally hold a focus group once weekly to stay in touch with client population. when we became CARP accredited in 2011 we created surveys. We have aftercare surveys, participation surveys, visitor surveys...we have surveys for everything. We greatly increased the staff training and we also have external training on sensitive issues. EEOC patient rights and HIPA compliance confidentiality and we began to have a once a week treatment team meeting with all of our counselors and case managers. In addition to our trying to have our clients be happy, we have checks and balances on our staff and client population. We have made extensive changes to our building. Every year we do changes to the environment here and it looks wonderful."

A Forever Recovery is proud to be a part of Ripoff Reports Corporate Advocacy Business Remediation and Customer Satisfaction Program, "It means a great deal to be a part of the Corporate Advocacy Business Remediation and Customer Satisfaction Program. Because I've always felt that Rip Off Report needs a way to be accountable for itself and to remove write ups that are completely erroneous with invalid data. A Forever Recovery would love to clear its name. Because we are proud of what we do and we have a deep commitment to both our program and to the addiction epidemic in the world. I feel this program will help us achieve these goals."

A FOREVER RECOVERY – STATEMENT FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR – PAMELA ANDERSON

" We are one of the oldest and most reputable drug and alcohol treatment centers in the state of Michigan. Our caring and professional staff are dedicated to making each client's experience memorable. This means that clients can learn tools to help them achieve lasting recovery well after they have completed treatment. We hope that they carry these tools with them for a lifetime of recovery.

A Forever Recovery's team have stated that they are adequately trained and certified to help clients through the recovery process during all phases. A Forever Recovery takes employee satisfaction seriously as well. Employee feedback and surveys reveal comments such as this, "A Forever Recovery provides a very positive work environment for employees. Employee suggestions are well-taken and implemented if they improve the treatment process for the client. Mrs. Anderson is dedicated to making sure that each employee strives to do his or her best to treat clients every day. "

A Forever Recovery NARCONON STONE HAWK  Battlecreek Michigan, Internet

Please pay attention, your money and your loved ones life is at risk.

I will assume if you are reading this, you like me are despertly seeking help for someone you love: About 3 months ago I bagan searching for a facility that could really help my 19 yr. old daughter, whom has a "pill" problem. Like most "seekers" I was having to work in the preamerters of what I could afford and where my ins. co.would pay. After searching locally, I responded to an internet ad, and hence began the nightmare of "A Forever Recovery" I was sold 1st by a nice fellow by the name of David, I really believed and still do that he meant what he was saying. "Now follow me on this" I after 3 or 4 conversations with David, told him that I could not afford, at the time to admit my daughter, and I was not sure it was the right timing. We talked another time about a week later and David quieted all my concerns. Concerns being I am afraid to send my daughter out of state, I am afraid they would not keep her long enough, I am afraid because although we had good medical ins. the drug treatment part did not seem to satify, other treatment centers for just a 30 day stay, much less the 90, or up to 6 months they were talking about, because according to David, they did not really concern themselves with the amount of money they got, but there main concern was my daughters, recovery. WoW! I thought that's nice! A place where they care!..my wife having worked in the healthcare field, including treatment centers seen this as the 1st red flag........Oh well read on....

I told david I would GET her in as soon as I could. About a month later I called David's cell phone and got a voice/mail. The call was returned later by a fellow named "murry" who informed me that "david" no longer worked there but that he would be happy to help me. Once again checking my ins. and telling me that for the low cost of a deductable of 5K, payed upon admit, my daughter would get all the attention she needed, and that if they had to keep her for up to 6 months it did not matter, that the well seasoned staff, "in recovery" would determine when my daughter was ready to handel "staying sober". He also reiterated that because of there unprecidited recovery rate they practiclly gurranteeded it. In other words, if my daughter needed to come back it was FREE OF CHARGE!  WOW! 2nd red flag: "to good to be true?"

We were sold. My wife and I, tearery eyed, with finally finding a place that seemed to care began booking flights from Austin Tx to Detroit MI. My wife was going with my daughter to help her get in. Murry said that would be fine! I booked the flight, and called Murry and informed him that they would be arriving at apox. 7:45pm at DTW. Murry said thats great! we will have someone at baggage with a sign with my daughters name on it, and they would drive them to the center and give my wife a tour.  They boarded the plane from Austin Tx. early morn. destined for    "A Forever Recover."

Arriving in DTW, there was a man there with a sign saying "Welcome Debbie",this is a fictious name, for I don't want to use my daughters. He was surprised to see my wife, he was nice enough, but unprofessional and hence came the 3rd red flag.

He said he thought Debbie was coming alone, my wife informed him that my husband definantly told "Murry" that she was coming.and "MURRY SAID GREAT!" The began making calls, and it became clear to my wife that Murry was upset, and said he did not know she was coming. The "happy tour" of the center would be shortened because of it being so late. Nevertheless, they took off in a co. van. The driver had no real creditals, and began to talk away, on the 1-1/2 hour commute. My wife inquired about "David" whom was our 1st contact with the center. Remember David? We'll he blunted out oh David he Killed himself. Shot himself with a gun. Don't know why. Just did. 4th red flag. I am not judging David, he was personable, young and I liked him, I do not know why he killed himself. I just know, with this lone guy picking up, what he thought to be my 19 year old daughter, alone at nite, out of state, a kid with a drug problem, at an airport, was wrong, it was the main reason for this 3rd red flag. My wife and I thought it to be, to say the least odd, risky, and unprofessional. Including his conversation. Futhermore he was not in recovery. My wife was just hoping my daughter did not hear the part about David. It upset her.

Upon arriving my wife and daughter were escorted inside and began the admit process, my wife had an urge to get up take our daughter our money and leave. She could feel the anomosity from the staff at a late evening tour, she was concerned with the staff. 5th red flag. I will keep this short. Why did my wife leave our daughter? Her and I can only say this. Most with an addicted child mite understand. When you have watched your child die on an ER table, when you have spent countless nites crying and worrying, when you have searched for your child in area's that you never would drive thur at nite, when you get up in the morning and they are not there, and your ritual has become calling the local hospitals and jails to find them, when you watch your daughter go from straight A's to F's when you see her dying before your very eyes, when you are  living this real, dayly, an nitely nightmare, you simply "Want to Believe" so conseqently you do.   and unfortunantly this can become a marketing tool for the       "Soul-Less"

My daughter was in "detox" for 7 days,  she was never seen by a counseler. 6th red flag. When my wife began to call the center, no-one would return a call. Our daughter was already crying and wanting to come home. My wife called every available number we had, even oh MR>Great! Murry, and no-one would call her back. By the time the day was ending, with at least 4 calls in, she was shaking, with fear.    7th red flag

I arrived home and seen my wife and I called Murry. He picked up. I swear, it was like a different person. He basically told us to go to hell. My wife picked up the phone and tryed to have an intellegent conversation, and he all but demeand her. Arrogance and defensiveness  was his manner.  We asked him to check on several things for us and he finally aggreed too, including find out why our daughter hadn't contacted us, and he said he would and hung up. We waited for 2 hours, it was apox 9pm by now and he did not. I called and got an operator, she said he went home...I began looking on the internet and found many complants, from parents whom had a similar expirences, getting very concerned, I called back, protending to be an attorney, and We finnally got a call back from a Holly. 8th red flag    We began looking at booking a late flight to Mi. in the mean time..

"Holly" called me and began to try to explain thing away. We began insisting that we hear from our daughter. Holly explained that she was gone to a spirtual type retreat we later learned was in a man's apartment. We voiced our concerns and Holly was as good as David and Mr. Great! Murry. She began to tell us what we wanted to hear. Although when Holly metioned that she had only 1-1/2 years sober and was the employee with the most tenure, it was alarming.  9th red flag.   I must note here that although I believe Murry and others know exactly the game they are playing with addicts lifes, Holly don't, she is being manipulated, in her young, fagil sobiety.

Here again I believe Holly believed her banter, and as a result, we did to, we still stayed in our denial, in hopes of our daughter getting help. after this conversation we asked that our daughter, call us once dayly, to queal our fears. She did. I am going to shorten this. Dayly my daughter cryed to come home, saying it was like highschool, boys sleeping with girls, compitition, no real help from staff, we tryed to hang in there, my wife and I both talking with her about working thur things, and not letting her know, about our concerns about the center, and employees, afraid she would use it to sabatoge her "recovery." Nevertheless as time went on and we found out after almost 20 days , she only seen her "counsler" once, who was not in recovery, we began to break thur our denial and discuss bringing our daughter home....yet there is more, much more.

About this time, I get a call from my daughter and she is crying and tells me of an insident that took place. She had allowed a fellow patient use her ph. calling card. The girl wrote down her calling card number and used all the minuets. My daughter went to confront her and a fight insued. Nevertheless "Holly" called me and informed me that my daughter was being "suspended" for 15 days. I said Holly It is late in the evening, we are in Texas, can it wait till tommorrow? She said no, she would be dropped off at a "safe mission" that nite, in Kalamazoo. I said Holly as far as I am concerned you are writing her death warrant, she is only 19 and only 10 days out of detox, she is in another state, she will be in a less supervised area. Holly is good; she convinced me and my wife to hang in there, that the mission is safe, and she would get the 15 days reduced to 7, and our daughter could come back. Then she said, oh by the way, if your daughter uses, you will have to give us another 5K to detox her.     10th red flag

Again we tryed to hang in there, being convinced by Holly this would work out and the mission was safe. We'll let me keep this short, the 1st day our daughter begged to come, home, Holly begged us to leave her there. We tryed, but after my daughter disappeared for 2 days, having a gun pulled on her, after her cloths being stole. I called the Kalamazoo police department, for help to find my daughter, and for advice. The Office I won't say his name was very nice. He said come get your daughter, he has seen this from the center before and the mission is not safe. It is drug infested....Come find and get her.

WE BOUGHT A ONE WAY TICKET TO MI. TO GET OUR DAUGHTER, IF SHE MUST DIE, WE WILL LET HER DIE WITH US. NO WE ARE OBVIOUSLY NOT GOING TO ENABLE HER TO DIE. BUT NEITHER WILL WE LET SOME GREEDY a*s, TREATMENT CENTER KILL HER.

MY DAUGHTER FINNALLY CALLED FROM A HOTEL, MY WIFE AND I CRIED, AND SHE IS ON HER WAY TO GET HER. AT THIS POINT UNTILL SHE IS SAFE WITH HER MOM, I WILL BE APREHENSIVE. MY WIFES PLANE WILL LAND IN DETROIT AT 4:32PM 4/28/10    MY DAUGHTER IS TO CONTACT HER. I AM WAITING.....

I'm so beside myself everyday still for what we unknowingly done. But, we are getting stronger everyday. I'm sorry & wish I could take everyones horrible experiences away (my son's the most) I wish, hell, I don't know what I wish. I just wish no one ever had to go through this horrible experience & that bad people didn't exist. I feel you & your families pain everyday. Everyday I see my son now & can only imagine what he went through because he won't talk about it, just kills me because I'm the one that made him go. I did this to him. These people are bad. I wish, nevermind. I hope the best for everyone.

The problem is that we don't know who YOU are and you are asking people who have already been scammed and hurt to put themselves in yet another vulnerable postion. Per Wickstrom and his scientology network have a dangerous reputation and possibly a long reach.

Our stories are already here.

I spoke with the MI Attoney General's Office and there are  NUMEROUS complaints already filed. Perhaps you should start there.

I would LOVE to see a story on Per Wickstrom and the truth fnally exposed.  When it is , he will be in jail, along with the Andersons, the law firm, and the "doctor" that works with him.

What amazes me is that there are not more or these out there.  I sympathize with the guy running to the neighbor.  I thought of that myself in the few days I was in the "detox unit" aka" spider ridden/bunk bed shack". They actually have black tee shirted bouncer types patroling the perimeter, so no one escapes until they get their upfront, refundable fee contract signed.  Then they could care less.  It actually benefits them to have people run, because then they convince the family, the client is just manipulating them and toi have them re-enter the facility and then another obsence charge/fee is applied.  It's a racket - plain and simple.

I am waiting for the class action suit.

It is only a matter of time and rest assured I will sign on.

Also, if any of you are looking for good treatment, I suggest Hazelden.  If that's not convenient, any ACCREDITED facility would help.  Licensing is not enough.  AFR just has a simple business license. An accredited treatment facility is one who participates in medical/psychiatric board standards and review.  AFR would NEVER quaiify for accredidation.

Get your husband out of there NOW!

Also, don't let them take him to a hotel as they like to drop a person in a bad, isolated area.

Give a cab company your credit card over the phone, or even call the police in the area if you must, to get him away from these people.  They have NO idea how to handle ANY medical issue.

Also, tell him NOT to sign ANY document they prepare for this release.  They just want money and they don't want him to talk about his experiences there.

I recently contacted the Michigan Atty Generals Office to add my experience to their investigations.  I will also check out this link you provided.

I will not rest unitl this dangerous scam is shutdown.

Hope he gets out of there quickly and safely.

Best wishes to you both.

Lawsuit

My husband also chose to go to AFR a couple weeks ago, and had a seizure, and wanted to come home.  Someone from the staff also called me and warned me that they normally don't allow calls during detox, however, they were going to allow it 'this time', and he would be calling and wanting to come home but he was not ready and I need to be firm and not allow him to come home.  I believed them because of the lies and excuses I have faced for over 10 years of him being addicted to pain pills... about 15 min later he called and told me that it wasn't what we thought it was and would finish out the detox but wanted to come home afterwards.  I convinced him to give it another week, unknowing of these horror stories and facts that I have since found out.  I feel horrible now and I am trying to get him home.  Anyhow, I also found this lawsuit online and thought some of you should possibly look into contacting this attorney with your experiences.... hope this helps everyone.

POSTED: Thursday, January 24, 2013

This is a response to the possibly well meaning but ignorant previous poster who said:

Yall need to accept that maybe your loved ones just weren't truly ready to get clean and fooled you yet again. Since that's what addicts are pro at doing

I can an only imagine how many people in desperate situations have actually been psychologically harmed by their encounter with AFR. Probably the only reason they can continue to defraud, abuse and neglect their clients is because of the very stigma articulated by the previous author.

What the people who have been hurt by AFR don't need is to be told is "they weren't just truly ready".--- like they did something wrong and AFR did no wrong.

The amazing consistency in all the stories posted here tell the true tale.

For those of you who maybe considering sending your loved ones there, the previous post is an example of the psychological games they will use to try to keep you in the dark about what is truly going on and to keep you from believing your loved ones when they are actually telling you the truth.

The reality of the place is nothing it is advertised to be.

First off, just because someone disagrees with your complaining doesn't automatically mean they're the owner or whatever. I graduated January of 2012. So to the consumer who said their husband did as well, who was he? And for anyone who doesn't believe me, send me an email and I will gladly prove I am not affiliated with Afr and I did I fact go to and complete the program and a year later, am still sober and living a fulfilling life. Secondly, COUNSELORS at Afr are ACTUAL counselors so no, you're not immediately greeted by them, but you are in fact greeted by other employees. And yes, I did only pay a small amount over 800 dollars for my 2 month stay even BEFORE they ever became accredited. My insurance, premera blue cross of Washington did infact pay the rest which was the entire 25k because the 800 was merely for my blood tests and detox meds which was not covered. Thirdly, the staff if this place are amazing human beings with HUGE hearts. Even though my program is up I am still welcomed to call whenever I need someone, and am allowed to stop in and attend "track" or graduation whenever I please as long as my drug test can be passed. Pam Anderson is a great person with a huge heart. She spends time with the clients and goes out of her way to protect and take of them I. Anyway she is able. Yall need to accept that maybe your loved ones just weren't truly ready to get clean and fooled you yet again. Since that's what addicts are pro at doing. No, detox wasn't the best facility, but it did the job. The actual facility wasnt 5 star accommodations, but it did the job! And that's all that matters here. Things happen, as they do with all businesses. If you take the number of complaints on here and compare it to the hundreds of thousands of people that go through that program, you'd realize there are few of you that are unhappy. You do t hear the good because those clients and family's are posting on private pages and forums designed for the graduates where they can keep in touch with all staff and each other. I would relive my stay at Afr any day. And in fact, I was begging my counselor and other staff members to do something to allow me to stay longer. Unfortunately my insurance wouldn't allow it and I didn't have the money to pay for the extra days.

re: where to start

AUTHOR: geronimo - (USA)

POSTED: Friday, January 04, 2013

I am so glad that you found the RippOff reports that helped you get your son out. When I first got out I tried to file a complaint with the Michigan Attorney General's Office, they told me I needed to file with the BBB. This went no where and it turns out you can file a complaint with the AG, I guess it is stardard proceedure  to try to pass the buck. I had also tried to contact a medical malpractice attorneys office around that time and was treated very insensitively and disrespectfully in by the lady giving the interview.  Unfortunately with all this I lost steam  since I could not deal with the recollection of my experience there and ended up not pursuing it further.

I just found out that for medical malpractice, Michigan has a two year statute of limitations with a possible 6 month extension but, I'm not sure if their actions will fall under the official label of "medical malpractice"

Maybe in the end the c***k in their armor will be false advertising. However I do forsee difficulties pursuing any legal action against them since the owner  Has a long history in the area and is well know by the local officials. Having said all this, there is nothing like the fight of a mother that can win the day and get justice.

I'm rooting for you, keep up the good fight!

response to rebuttal # 15. FEW FORMER DISGRUNTED CLIENTS

AUTHOR: geronimo - (USA)

POSTED: Friday, January 04, 2013

It makes my blood boil when I hear that these ripoff reports are labeled as "a few disgruntled former employees/ clients".  Based on my personal experience there, I know that the writers of these reports are not exaggerating. It is incredulous that they have treated and continue to treat people that way when  in their most vulnerable state. I remember my wife telling me how the  "intake specialist" assured her  that is was so important that I have a "good" experience there.  My experience there was more traumatic than  seeing my dad die in front of me at age 15. AFR has  definitely been the most traumatic experience in my life. It has been a little over two years since I was there and my hands still start to shake when I think about them, yet my traumatic experience there has been labeled as "a disgruntled former client".

I remember  waking up repeatedly in their "detox" cabin gasping for air one day. I told their staff that I though I was experiencing sleep apnea and that I needed medical attention. I was told to go back to bed and try sleeping on my side. I told the staff member monitoring the "detox" cabin, " look I think I am experiencing a dangerous allergic reaction to the medication and need to see the nurse immediately and I have a clue about what I'm talking about ---I was formerly a certified EMT" I was told "you are not the only client here,  the nurse is busy, go back to bed and sleep on your side".  ---this is just one of many examples of what they did.

I'll never be able to forgive myself for sending my son to that HELL HOLE called BDR. Finding out where you sent your child to turns out to be hell is the most horrible feeling in the world. Thanks to a young man named Daniel (& many, many others) that filed a report on here I got my son out as soon as I could. I don't have to tell you anything you all allready have'nt heard. All our stories are basically the same. All I know is that I don't want no one else to ever have to go through what we or our loved ones have been through. The guilt I feel is unbearable. I don't know if my son will ever be the same again. I know I won't. We need to put a stop to this. People cannot be abused & mistreated because of their addictions or disorders so others can get rich. All I want is my son to be better & live as close to a normal life as he can without sorry excuses of people taking advantage of our loved ones for their selfishness & making things worse. Please, some one help me & us get this stopped so no others have to endure this horrible experience. We live in Texas & I just need a start somewhere on who to start contacting. Please?

abuse, money back, hospitalized, lies

AUTHOR: Client in 2010 - (United States of America)

POSTED: Saturday, September 29, 2012

I don't know what made me google this place tonight, but really glad I did after reading this!

AFR is an awful awful place. They take adult addicts, who are in a very fragile place in their lives, and take advantage of every quality they have, lying to family members and treating the addicts as prison inmates. You may fare better off in Prison and I honestly believe that, than in this place with these people. If anyone cares about their loved ones at all they will not send them there. This is my story as quick as I can put it:

3 years ago I was a "client" (they don't call you patients because they aren't giving any medical treatment!) at  AFR. 32 years old mother of 2 at the time. I was an alcoholic, drank 24 hours a day.. . I had never sought help.. but was ready and found this place online. (advertised every time you put in the word Addiction). My father and I drove 6 hours there after he had talked to them many times over the phone. We already knew I needed a medical detox from past experience--I had been hospitalized multiple times trying to detox on my own, bc of  seizures, convulsions, etc. I was at the point in my addiction that my body was completely dependent on alcohol to live. People die from alcohol detox. People will feel like they will die from a lot of detoxes, but from alcohol, people do die. So they promised a medical detox similar to the ones I had gotten in the ER, we said yes and made the trip.

We arrived to outdated but nice looking lobby where my ex filled out all the forms. They gave no tour to him and that's all he saw. He signed the papers. (I didn't know then but they suggested he check the box to send me to the homeless center if I left) They promised him I'd be in a single room with no other patients at least thru the detox-- I really didn't want a roommate while I was sick and hooked up to IV's if that was the case as it had been in the past, and they said "no problem!"

I said goodbye.. once he left, it was like 180. I never saw the lobby again, I was taken to a disgusting, filthy, mildewed, moldy shack. A literal shack. I can't imagine it's up to any code. On the main floor, one bath room, a tiny kitchen, a living room/dining room, and a tiny room off the living room with 2 bunk beds that left less floor space than bed. Upstairs was for men only but I understand 5 sets of bunk beds (10 ppl!) between 2 rooms and another bath (it was "under construction" the entire time I was there and never used) and downstairs I was told was for the women. Steep, carpet covered, concrete steps led to a room with a drop ceiling that was too low for anyone over 6 ft to feel comfortable standing in. Another bathroom that was filthy. This was not a "single" room that I had imagined. This was not the 'resort like setting to feel comfortable while detoxing' that we had been sold on. I demanded to call my dad, I was told no. I threw a fit and eventually I was told I could sleep in the room off the living room for just that night. I was so upset, Just hours into the scariest decision of my life to seek real treatment and leave my loved ones for months, I was facing the beginning of many many lies.

I had no choice but to stay there, I was an addict with no say.. So I slept in the room with 4 beds too large for the room.. cried all night. Awoke to 7 men in the living room. No privacy. One bathroom for all of them. Everything was dirty looking-- we were in charge of cleaning  the "withdrawl house" ourselves. There is no cleaning service at the treatment center (same for the main facility, I was handed a plunger to plunge my roommates poop and told I couldn't use the public restrooms anymore until I plunged someone elses poop!). The staff at the crappy house consisted of a few  people rotating shifts, all supposed former addicts that looked like they just used in the car on their breaks. Most of the time they were sitting at a desk playing solitaire on a computer, eating food we couldn't eat and playing on their cell phones. AWESOME.

Within 2 days, I reached full detox. I never left the little room in the first 2 days except to use the restroom and once to go outside and puke. The one bathroom was occupied.  I started convulsing at some point. I asked and begged to see the doctor- I was told one doctor for 100 people come only on Wednesdays. I told them to call 911. I knew I needed it. They kept on their cell phones, no one cared. I begged to call home, no one cared. They told me myfamily hated me and showed me a form where he checked homeless center if I wanted to leave. (An addict starts to feel guilt and remorse during treatment and this company absolutely takes advantage of it telling them that their family hates them.. in reality I had a supportive family at home that may have been fed up with me but was happy I was seeking treatment.) I didn't even want to leave though,  I wanted medical help! I needed something, my body shaking, I couldn't control my limbs, I couldn't walk without help, and I couldn't sleep because every part of me was jerking. Seizures and shaking.. so thirsty, drenched in sweat, freezing too and someone said my name and said i could see the doctor. A staff member looked hesitant to touch me but helped me to walk the probably 300 ft to the main building. No wheel chair or real help, I some how made it there physically looking down to see the placement of my feet on the grass because I had no real control over my body.

I was so excited to see a doctor. I wanted medicine, I wanted fluids. I wanted to live. I saw the doctors face, and he honestly looked at me like he was scared. He looked like he was in trouble. He didn't call 911. He didn't touch me. He sat behind a desk. It wasn't a doctor's office, I'm not sure he was even a doctor. I huddled to the floor because if I stood, I'd fall and crack my head on the tile. an air conditioner blew on me, someone handed me water but i shook so hard i spilled every drop on the floor and this guy still hadnt called 911. I curled up in a ball and begged him, and prayed to God that I could live through it. I seriously remember knowing I was going to die because no one was helping me.

Finally the doctor called 911. I don't know how much time had passed. A stretcher, an ambulance, I couldn't hold a pen to sign papers because I was shaking that badly... somehow I got admitted. A nurse asked if I wanted a priest to bless me .. just in case I didn't make it. I don't remember my answer. I got my medical detox in an ER in Battle Creek, MI. NOT AT AFR.

When I started feeling better, still at the hospital, I wondered why my family hadn't called or come. I almost died.. I remembered the staff had told me how much they all hated me. They said that they spoke to them since I'd been there and that they wanted nothing to do with me. I managed to have a nurse let me use her cell phone for 2 minutes (the in room phone was local only) and called my dad-- AFR NEVER TOLD THEM I HAD BEEN ADMITTED TO A REAL HOSPITAL!! 48 HOURS LATER! and i had to get off the phone. I thought I could go home-- I didn't want to go back to the shack. But somehow I was taken right back there.

I begged to call home. "no" I told them I didn't want to stay that I read in the contract I had a number of days to leave at the beginning (it really is in the contract.. 6 days or something and half money refunded..) but they told me I could only go to the Kalamazoo Homeless Center and couldn't even take my clothes or call my fam. Said I'd get raped for sure, plus they said I couldn't have my ID and the police would arrest me in Michigan they said. One day I walked off the deck to the main building and demanded to call home.. "Holly" called for me on speaker.. she had complete control over the conversation, convincing him to leave me there, not really letting me talk and ending the convo when he expressed concern. He told me in a very sad unsure voice to be strong and try my best.

Back to the shack (total 6 or 7 days i was there). I was feeling better, but still refused to sleep in the rotten basement. A male had taken over my little room so I started sleeping on a recliner in the living room. The staff made everyone go to their rooms at night but for some reason always let me stay there. I awoke one night to another patient laying next to me. A male, feeling on my breast, with the staff right there. They were certainly aware what he was doing. I didn't know what to do, but between sleeping in the basement and letting him feel me up, I chose the latter and pretended that I was asleep the whole time. It was absolutely horrible. With the AFR employees sitting 5 feet away saying nothing.

There was 1 hot tub for everyone, boys and girls. The food was like elementary cafeteria. They do not offer choices for vegetarians. Old dishes we washed ourselves. They gave us vitamins and some disgusting calcium magnesium drink. Massages were true--but they are not offered by AFR, just a nice employee on duty would give them as time allowed. I think I got 2 20 min ones in the 7 days. There was no schedule or plan, just sit and watch TV. or sit outside and smoke. couldn't leave the deck.

The upstairs bathroom was supposedly under construction the entire time I was there..and they told us we had to leave during 2 of the days we were supposed to be detoxing. The staff members took us all to the main building and literally locked us in a tiny room called the green room where we watched no joke 4 movies in a row for 2 days straight. It made no sense.

My brand new contacts went missing from my stuff one day when i took them out for a break, i had no glasses. I went the next 10 days with no contacts. I couldn't see but shadows and blurry figures-- and they told me I was hallucinating and I didn't even bring my contacts. They even double checked in the security office. ... When I left 12 days later-- MY CONTACTS WERE CLEARLY RIGHT ON TOP WITH MY CELL PHONE!! 6 pairs of them! Someone took them from me and tried to make me feel crazy. It was awful.

Day 6 or 7 I was finally moved into the new building where I was told everything would get better! Thank God. First thing I did was call home.I couldn't wait, because I knew they were going to come get me!!!! I had almost died-- literally, been practically molested, I was filthy, I couldn't see, I was only eating tiny bagels...... and you know what my dad said "Honey, they told me you were going to tell me all of this, and it's all lies. They already warned me, and you're saying exactly what they said you would. You weren't in the ER for 2 days, you had a simple check up, gone from the property a couple hours. I love you, please try." ..... THEY LIED TO HIM.

I told them I wanted to leave again! (like I had told them every single other time for 6-7 days)... and you know what they said? They said its past the 6-7 day period that I can leave, maybe if I had left the day before, now I have to stay.

I met my counselor on day 9. For 5 minutes. I think he got my name and address.

I talked to every staff member upstairs. I particularly disliked "Holly", she was full of lies.

I smoked a million cigarettes. I filled out my 300 question thing the best I could, but I still didn't have control over my fingers.

People were having sex everywhere. Not joking.

My so called nice room was a tiny sh**hole with 2 bunks (4 beds) and some rooms had 3 (6 beds) and one bathroom. No one cleaned. Sunday was cleaning day where you got a bucket of empty supplies and they came to check how good you cleaned like it was summer camp for 7 year olds. It had to be so germy and filthy.

Security guards favored others.. nothing was fair in the place.

The advertised boat didn't run. The beach wasn't ever used.

I went to class, laid in bed, sat at a table to sleep to sit to nothing

My knee had a cut, and it turned greenish. I could barely walk on it, and the nurse put Vaseline on it with a band aid. She didn't clean it, didn't help it, covered the infection in Vaseline and covered it. Then told me they were out of Vaseline and i was kind of out of luck if it was infected tomorrow still.

I cried to my family every single day.

My family picked me up on day 12 or 13 .. after they read reports just like on this website. It matched up to what I was saying and they believed me. they said the staff constantly called and convinced them ways of leaving me there.

Even when my dad was physically in the building demanding to pick me up, they still weren't releasing me. It took hours.

The handed me my belongings from security--including the contacts that I had lived without for 10ome days. I hadn't been able to see for that long, squinting and guessing who was who!! It just added to my misery.

I quickly began drinking after and then checked into a real treatment center shortly after and received proper treatment and care. I've been sober since.

Months later after being discharged, we began dealing with the insurance and payment aftermath. They told us because we hadn't checked out in the grace period of whatever it was 6-7 days, that I had to pay the full amount of like 30,000. (I'd have to check the actual figures to be 100 percent but this is close) We refused to pay it because I also had a couple thousand dollar bill with the local hospital for my MEDICAL DETOX that was supposed to be offered at the treatment center.

We were sent tho collections, Had a lien against us that affected our credit and we couldn't afford it. For treatment we didn't get.

Dealing with them about finances was just awful. No one wanted to call me back, or take my phone calls, I waited on hold every time I called for at least 20 minutes just to get someone to say hello and then usually they had no idea what else to say to me besides they'd call me back--and never did. I literally spent hours daily over a few weeks span to finally talk to someone that did something -- I'd have to check the name but after telling him about my situation, he completely dropped my entire bill, Told me we would be even with the 6000 or whatever we initially paid. Said he would call off collections and have it removed from our credit! And he did--very quickly.

The ER bill was what I was going to deal with next -- I had received some bills in the mail, but suddenly they stopped coming. I called the hospital one day to figure out payment and there was no money due from me in the system. In fact, they couldn't find me in the system at all! My name wasn't in their payment system. Why? Who paid the bill? I still have not paid that bill and neither has my insurance, it just doesn't exist. I apparently was never there.

AFR is an awful awful place. I thought I was going to die there, and surprised if no one has. There is no medical detox. They couldn't even properly treat a small cut on my leg. They cover up everything they do. If you are thinking of sending someone there, DO NOT. They are not properly staffed or able to handle an actual medical emergency, it is also just a filthy disgusting environment. The counselors see you "minimum once a week"-- in treatment that costs that much-- I saw my counselor EVERY SINGLE DAY, more if I wanted to, but there you do not.

They take advantage of everything an addict has to offer. Addicts do lie, addicts do not always want to be in treatment, and addicts certainly may have relationship problems with their families, and AFR will prey on all those characteristics of addicts to get your money. A treatment center should be somewhere to trust, that works FOR the addict and with the families. This place will scare you away from ever seeking help again. I can't think of a better word other than abuse. They take advantage of adults in very vulnerable spots--and unfortunately because of who these adults are, they are able to.. and it's not until a family member reads reviews like these, do they realize maybe their addict was not lying after all. It causes guilt for these family members too.. and everyone needs more counseling.

I'm sorry this review is probably all over the place, I had to type quickly, but that's my experience. If it stops one person from sending a family member there, I am thankful!

good can happen inspite of the place, but not because of it.

AUTHOR: geronimo - (USA)

POSTED: Monday, September 17, 2012

In my opinion, the only reason this place is allowed to continue to operate is the because of the prejudice toward addicts  depicting them as cheats and liars, thus reducing the credibility of any complaints against them.

The truth is this place is a dangerous scam ---- I  know---- I was there. Don't buy into any  "recovery stories".  If any good comes out of that place, I believe it is certainly in spite of them.

My experience there was very traumatic, not only due to the medical neglect but, because of the emotional abuse, the lies, the six guys on bunk beds sharing a small room during the joke of a medical detox, and the gross misrepresentation of of their facility which leads people to go there in the first place.

It truly is the Hotel California of treatment centers.  They lie to get people there and they lie to keep them there. They will lie to your family about you and they will lie to you about your family---  in my case they told me that my wife said she would leave me if I didn't stay --- she never said any such thing.

Well, I am so thankful to all those of you out there that  have rebutted the original  bebuttal and are fighting to get that place closed down --- keep up the good work!

Cost varies, depending upon desperation!

Did I read correctly at the end of your report that your total cost for 2 months of this "program" was $843.?   Not that I believe your report by any means, but maybe you have a response to our cost of $34,000?   I have read all of the reports on this horrible excuse of a "Program" and it seems that most people are charged approx. $25,000.  Certainly not less than $1,000.  Who do you think you are fooling?  Apparently the charges vary, dependiing upon the situation.   At a time of tremendous distress for our family & worry that cannot be expressed in words, we turned to this group for help.  We were totally and completely Ripped-off.  Knowing that we would do anything to save our son, the recruiters had lots of talk, but would not talk specific cost.  We were hesitant.  Shortly  thereafter,  my son was arrested.  Perfect for the Narconon recruiter!  What great news for him.  Now he would definatly get his commission.  At this time I still trused Josh's intent.  We were desperate and arranged for a transporter, paid all his expenses and received a bill in our hotel by fax in which we had to send immediately.  The bill was for $32,000.   My son's court date was the next day, we had no option but to pay it on the spot.  We were also told to file this with our insurance company.  Of course, they knew it would never be covered by insurance.

POSTED: Monday, August 27, 2012

Davids last name started with a V and is something like Venamen. He used to be called skinny by the students at narconon stone hawk aka feedom center. He was then moved down to Battelcreek where he was an intake counsleor. He killed himself. Another intake counselor Joe Darwin relapsed on crack coccaine and was in treatment in April and back at it with the phones the next week. The employees relapse, have to pay for there treatment and then get a stipend around 400.00 taken off their pay check a month. So they are forced to go right back into there job where they have no training or licensing and most likely relapse again. And if they arent lucky enough to be offered treatment which most are not. They are dropped at a motel with all their luggage and  no money or way to get home and typically on drugs to..This happened to so many employeed while I worked at BDR.

POSTED: Monday, August 27, 2012

David's last name began with a D I believe. I should be able to have the actual name and spelling later today or some time this week. David did in fact kill himself. And he is not the first person that works for New Life Recovery that kills himself and he will not be the last. When I worked at BDR New Life Recovery was the company that signed my checks. Per Wickstrom has the money tied up and moved regularly to avoid paying to much out in lawsuits.

It is all about money and conversion into scientology nothing else. Sex and drugs are just away to get your loved one there and keep them there..

Ridiculous..these people need to be punished

AUTHOR: margaux - (United States of America)

POSTED: Saturday, August 25, 2012

Everytime I read articles on afr/bdr/narconon, what not, I am disgusted..all I can say is that no other rehab behaves this way. It is hard to even get a lot of them to call you back on the phone. They definitely do not chase you down and harass you. The whole thing is so cultish. We need to untie and I am sure someone has already died there. Someone died in Tranquility detox in May 2012.

And having someone defend the place, ridiculous and so obvious. Do yourself a favor and a bit of research, look up five other rheba and there is not a single report. Then look up narconon, there are 55. Then check out A.F.R, BDR, etc..There are about 30 between the two. Put that in respective. You are treated better in prison and that is free. I guess these places are like a concentration camp or a prisoner of war camp.  HELP..get your loved one out of there.

Dear Ex- employee,You obviously never asked the so called nursing staff to see their credentials. They are MEDICAL ASSISTANTS NOT NURSES LIKE THEIR BADGES SAY. THE MEDICAL ASSISTANTS THAT WORK THERE ARE NOT EVEN CERTIFIED NOR REGISTERED. EVEN THE NURSE SUPERVISOR IS JUST A MEDICAL ASSISTANT WHO IS ALLOWED TO ORDER DRUGS FOR PTS WITHOUT A REAL PRESCRIPTION. THIS PLACE IS A REAL SCAM AND ITS NO WONDER THEY GO THRU SO MANY EMPLOYEES, REASON BEING THAT PEOPLE WHO ARE TRUELY THERE TO HELP OTHERS DONT WANT TO BE INVOLVED WITH THEIR SCAMS.ASK ANY OF THE NURSING STAFF WHO HAVE BEEN FIRED FROM THERE I BET WE ALL HAVE THE SAME STORIES. I DONT KNOW THE NAMES OF PAST NURSING STAFF, BUT WOULD LOVE TO TALK TO SOME OF THEM.

Former Employee's Insight

AUTHOR: TheWolf - (United States of America)

POSTED: Thursday, April 12, 2012

I am a former employee of A Forever Recovery.  I was there for numerous incidents that appear on the Ripoff Report site.  In fact, one of the reports said I was reprimanded and fired by upper management, which was not true, I was there two months following the incident.  Even this original post, I was there for.

A Forever Recovery is NOT Scientology based.  They are NOT Narconon.  They are a family run business. The policies and procedures that were implemented were down over time and with input from numerous employees that had nothing to do with Scientology.

The 'withdrawal house' is not five star accommodations.  It is a house where the staff does their best to ween your loved ones off of their addictions.  Could it be better?  Absolutely.  But you're not paying for a resort and as such, you're not going to receive that treatment.  From what I have last heard, they have actually purchased a separate building for withdrawal, but I can't confirm that.

The employees are not and were not corrupt Scientologist disciples.  They were people like me, who were given a chance to help make a difference and save lives.  We were not paid the best, and we worked our tails off.  If there was that much money that they were scamming, the employees would've been taken care of better.

The medical staff IS a medical staff, and if you ask for credentials, every one of their nurses can provide it.  And the unqualified counselors that you are referring to can show you their Masters degree, they are plastered up as proof so that people don't assume...

The program, if followed and adhered to by the clients, is stellar and a solid, very well organized system.  I have nothing but praises for the program because I have watched it save lives.

Now, for my feelings on management.  I am not liked at AFR.  Due to the aftermath of my resignation, which included battles over unemployment and money owed, I was not allowed to communicate with any staff because I fought for what I thought was right.  I still feel that I was treated unfairly, mainly due to not receiving the money back for the certification that I paid for that I was promised when I left.  I do not work for AFR and I will not work for AFR again.  I have nothing to gain from this post, but I have nothing to lose either.

A Forever Recovery is not paradise.  AFR has done some shady things to their employees, and keeping your job seems more like a high school popularity contest.  However, they have a solid program that can save lives, I have witnessed it and so have many others.  They are unfairly bashed by a few disgruntled former clients/family members.  Remember, you have sent an addict to rehab... the same addicts that have often times manipulated and took advantage of you.  If they don't want help, what makes you think they won't manipulate and take advantage of you to get out of rehab?  Stop being manipulated!  Go find the graduates, the ones who made it and continue to be successful, and base it off of them.  The program is solid, the staff is qualified, and the purpose and dedication is there.  Hold up your end of the bargain now, and get your family help.  If AFR isn't your choice, fine, go elsewhere, but base it off of facts instead of vendettas.

This is a quote from the HAPPY AFR client:

Its funny you say this about a drug counselor:
"Considering that was my FIRST day at AFR, and i arrived at 4pm, i had not met my counselor yet, as they too have lifes and a normal work schedule."

My husband a 34 yr old man was also a client of AFR and had the same things to say. First of all NO CONSELOUR would not come to great a new ADDICT to their facility because they have a life too... i hope you understand how pathetic that sounds.

You are saying the same crap that my husbands counselor said to me and his mother before I drove to come pick him up. Go to a real drug rehabilition center and compare it to your AFR and you will see why you guys run a joke SCAM over there at AFR. STOP TRYING TO GET PEOPLE TO BELIEVE YOU RUN A TRUE REHAB FACILITY. ALL THE EMPLOYEES THERE ARE BRAIN WASHED BY THE OWNERS TO BELIEVE THE CRAP THAT COMES OUT OF THEIR MOUTHS. THE FIRST PEOPLE YOU TALK TO THAT GET YOU TO REGISTER ARE SALES PEOPLE THAT GET A COMMISSION IF YOU COME TO AFR. THAT IS NOT HOW A DRUG REHAB IS RAN.

ITS ONE BIG SCAM TO GET PEOPLES MONEY AND THEY HIRE THEIR EMPLOYEES RIGHT OUT OF THIER OWN PROGRAM WHICH IS WHY ITS SO EASY TO BRAIN WASH THEM. THEY ARE NOT QUALIFIED EMPLOYESS AND THEY ALL HAVE ADDICT ATTITUDE PROBLEMS. NONE OF THEM ARE PROFESSIONAL INFACT THEY DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO BE PROFESSIONAL BECAUSE THEY WERE ADDICTS ALL THERE LIVES SOME RECENT ADDICTS.

IF YOU SEND YOUR LOVED ONES THERE JUST KNOW THAT THIS PLACE IS A BUSINESS TRYING TO MAKE MONEY. THEY TELL YOU EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO HEAR TO GET YOU IN THE DOOR AND THEN AS SOON AS YOU REALIZE WHAT YOU SIGNEd YOUR LOVED ONE UP FOR YOUR MONEY HAS BEEN DEBITED AND THEY TURN INTO THE REAL ADDICTS THEY REALLY ARE. They don't return calls, thier nice attitudes go away and their true colors shine through.

THIS PLACE LACKS, PROFESSIONALISM AND COMPASSION. THE FIRST COUNSELOR YOU TALK TO IS JUST TRYING TO GET HIS COMMISSION OFF YOU AND EVERYONE ELSE CAN CARE LESS ABOUT YOU. ONCE YOURE THERE 7 DAYS THERE IS NO REFUND. AND THATS THE BEST PART BECAUSE DURING THAT FIRST 7 DAY PERIOD YOU ARE NOT ALOUD TO USE THE PHONE AT ALL AND IF THEY DO LET YOU CALL HOME THEY HAVE THE OWNERS SON IN THE ROOM WITH YOU WHILE YOU ALL TALK ON SPEAKER PHONE. BEWARE OF THIS PLACE ITS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE ITS SHUT DOWN FOR GOOD. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS I WOULD BE HAPPY TO HAVE MY HUSBAND TELL YOU ABOUT HIS 7 DAYS THERE. MY FAMILY IS NOW OUT $11,000 BECAUSE OF THEIR LIES TO GET US THERE. JUST KNOW THAT THIS PLACE IS A BUSINESS TRYING TO MAKE MONEY. THEY TELL YOU EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO HEAR TO GET YOU IN THE DOOR AND THEN AS SOON AS YOU REALIZE WHAT YOU SIGNED YOUR LOVED ONE UP FOR YOUR MONEY HAS BEEN DEBITED AND THEIR TRUE COLORS SHINE THROUGH.

PLEASE DO NOT SEND YOUR LOVED ONES HERE FROM ONE AMERICAN TO ANOTHER There are plenty of rehabs out there that actually care about their PATIENTS not clients - as AFR would call you - that have time to great you when you come in - their lives/busy schedules do not interfere with your recovery. A drug rehad should not be a business with sales reps that answer the phone when you call so please keep that in mind when you talk to Jamie or any other sales rep that may work there now. Jamie was our rep..

AFR's new evil twin BDR "Best Drug Rehab"

AUTHOR: Anonymous - (USA)

POSTED: Saturday, February 25, 2012

The newest addition to the A Forever Recovery (aka AFR or Forever Recovered) scam is
>>Best Drug Rehab<<  or BDR .

These disgusting facilities are run by former Narconon staff.  They falsely billing the living daylights out of insurance carriers, AND charge unknowing families extra $$ (usually unnecessary) on top of good insurance. If you have ssen the rooms then you know they're far cry from a clinical hospital setting - yet insurance companies are being billed for private hospital suites.

Alert!!!!!  Keep your eyes open for the third coming soon to another city in MI. Name TBA.....

Someone is writing scam rebuttals all ove the internet and I agree that Anderson and Wickstrom are  probably behind them.

Actually, it does them more harm than good, because they acknowledge their off the wall approach.

I mean seriously, what other treatment program do you know that "punishes" their clients by sending them out of the center to a "mission" or a hotel.  And all accredited programs allow phone calls during the detox phase ( albeit limited time.) At AFR - you are not allowed access to a phone, UNTIL they have gotten their full upfront money ( usually about 10k) and their no refund/no litigation against them, contract signed.

It is really more of boot camp  - not an treatment center.

I will not rest until they are exposed and shut down.

I am now writing to the media to investigate them, as the attorney general seems to have no interest.

Sounds like Pam Anderson is back to writing fake experiences again. There is no detox at that place. They call it a withdrawal house, Scientology speak for place to be put on vitamins. This place is a scam. I personally have filed complaints with state, and wonder why this place is still scamming. It should be a red flag for a place that has little to no. local people as clients, and all the clients are from out of state. That means they have bad reputation locally. They are the only inpatient treatment center that uses MRT therapy. Ask the about success rate, they will tell you its high, when all other treatment centers in the USA are around 15%. Its easy to claim high numbers when you pass everyone. Good try Pam and Per.

False Advertising

AUTHOR: M.Cate - (USA)

POSTED: Wednesday, January 25, 2012

Nice try at damage control marketing "Author", but your entire story is fiction, beginning with how "nice" the detox shack is. Also, No insurance company will cover A Forever Recovery because it is not an accredited facility.  Your final bill is thus a fantasy as well.

Admissions must be slow to have hired you to write this marketing ploy.

Parents and families - do NOT send your loved one to this facility!

If you are seeking inpatient services, please make sure it is an accredited rehab facility.
Call you insurance company and health provider to help you select a facility and try and do it locally, so you can be close to and visit your child or relative while in treatment and be apart of the experience as well as be assured of their safety.

A Forever Recovery is neither safe nor professional.

It is slick, scientology inspired operation designed to quickly separate you from your money.

Former Client

AUTHOR: 667845 - (United States of America)

POSTED: Wednesday, January 25, 2012

I first would like to start by saying that in addiction, a person is known to lie, cheat, steal, and manipulate, and to be a professional at it. A month ago, i completed the A Forever Recovery program.

When i first got to detox, i too was disgruntled, i was sick from detoxing, and i was angry as all get out at any and everyone that crossed my path. The detox setting is a nice setting though. It is its own facility so you are surrounded by people in the same stage as you. They provide 2 clean hot tubs, one for males and one for females, a smoke shack for sheltered smoking, a gym, a sauna, 2 lounges, a 24 hour nurse station, a help yourself kitchen, with 3 meals served a day, as many massages as wanted through out the day by the nurses on staff, and even a game room. The biggest complaint i have about the detox facility is that the beds were on the uncomfortable side.

Detox is all about relaxing and getting through detox, there is no counseling nor phone calls because it causes added stress!! the last thing a detoxing addict needs, at this stage addicts are already planning their escape and craving their DOC like crazy. Stress is kept at a minimum for the addicts!!

**Note : I only spent 3 days in detox. arrived saturday night, left to the actual AFR on tuesday afternoon.  Amount of stay at Detox is solely based on how long you take to detox and your medication ween. My bill after detox, after insurance : $873 not 5K.

When i was brought over to the actual AFR facility, i jumped at the first chance ot pull out my lying and manipulation skills, called my parents, told them every lie i could think of, that they brainwashed people, the staff wasn't helpful, it's like high school, the staff is perverted, ect. luckily my parents had read into these behaviors and knew to EXPECT them!! THey told me to tough it out for a week. i told them i was leaving the next day.

Considering that was my FIRST day at AFR, and i arrived at 4pm, i had not met my counselor yet, as they too have lifes and a normal work schedule. The next day my counselor found me and we had our first meeting were she explained to me how the counseling worked, discussed my fears, discussed the program and got to the bottom of me wanting to leave. she convinced me to give it 2 weeks. which i am indeed more than greatful for.

Your first week you are still on a semi detox program where you spend an hour in the sauna. you are then free for a few hours, then you have one class to work on a "blue book" where you are asked over 300 questions about you life from childhood (as in first memory) to present day. this process is hell!! but only while doing it. once finished, you choose a facilitator, whom is also an addict in recovery, to go over your book with. you share, and they share with you their story as well. after this is done, you are given the choice to either A.) keep b.) shred or c.) burn your answers in a fire. this process is to pull all the pain youve endured in your out, to get you to a.) feel it while answering questions b.) deal with it by talking about it and c.) let it go by destroying it.

After this, you are then put into the MRT process, which consists of 12 steps, and a grace, but much different from normal 12 step programs.

This is where you will notice a change in your loved one!!

If you choose to put your loved one in this facility, then please stand strong in trusting the program until they have reached this stage. Which is the start of week 2. At this point they have a red book, where they are given 16 chapters to read and answer questions about. this took me 3 days to complete as iw as still eager to get out quickly and get back home to USE again. i was still lying to my parents, but there were also wheels turning in my mind and certain things starting to settle within me.

by then end of week 2 i had presented step 1. which is done in an MRT group of your choosing (womens, mens, or co-ed) Step 1 is honesty. this is where i let out all the lies i had told, the ways i had hurt people, ect. its when i learned to start telling the truth in order to get honest responses and to feel the freeing feeling of being honest about any and everything. this is also where my lying stopped. i still wanted to get out quick, but i had stopped lying to my parents about the stupid things i had been. Not until Step 3 (opposition) did things fully sink in, and i accepted where i was, and began enjoying it. Step 3 is a big step. If you are not noticing changed by beginning of week 2, into the actual AFR program, then yes, began to ask questions and worry a little. but until your loved one has COMPLETED and PASSED step 3, please dont pull your loved one out. give them a fighting chance in their addiction, no matter how much they whine and complain and lie and manipulate you. STAY STRONG. that's your part in your loved one's recovery at this point.

As to the part about the mission, when you enter AFR you are sat down with the CBO and they explain everything about the program, how things work, and most importantly the rules. you sign a paper agreeing to abibe by the rules. they have a "write up" system where breaking a rule results in a write up, a certain number of write up's results in that consequence, untimately teaching your loved one "you choose the action, you choose the consequence" only certain violations result in being sent to the mission, which are posted all around the facility, and explained and presented to your loved one.

These things include fighting, bring drugs into the facility, making alcohol such as "hooch" ect. NOW, while i was there there was a "hooch" incident. only the people who LIED about being involved were sent to the mission and only for 5 days. the people who came clean and were honest recieved lesser punishments. when the incident broke out, the staff was righto n handling it and getting rid of it to protect the sobriety of others. other actions include sexual activity, or walking out on certain punishments. Sexual activity is not allowed, the people who your daughter said were having sex, had to go to great lengths to achieve that, consider men and women bunk on different floors and there is always someone watching the cameras. no men on the womens floor and no women on the mens floor.

As for counseling, there has been many times my counselor and others, have come in at late/early hours to help deal with a clients situation when in need. counseling is offerened to everyone at a minmum of once a week. as for my counselor personally, she checked on all of her clients daily before leaving, offered family counseling as many times as needed, and even did a few group session counseling activitys on sunday for us, note these were not like the one on one sessions, but more about empowering us as humans and to teach us we are still worth as much as we were before our addiction, as well as teaching us how to manage our lives in recovery and the struggles we may endure. when i asked my counselor, she moved me to twice weekly. as well as keeping an "open door" whenever she wasnt in session, to come up and talk, vent, or even just cry.  my last week at AFR, i saw my counselor everyday, scheduled,  and an additionally from her checking on me, and going up on my own when feeling overwhelmed about LEAVING. yes i came in begging and pleading  to leave, and left begigng, pleading, and even crying to stay.

If you have an issue, of any kind, there is ALWAYS someone there to help you. The entire staff is great, even house keeping will sit down and listen if they become who you can confide in. there are multiple case managers, counselors, security, CBO, nurses, and facilitators there to help.

Every night excluding weekends, there is some for of religious track to attend, from faith to indigenous to holistic. and if religion isnt in your loved ones interest, they can attend NA/AA or CBT.

there are multiple classes that are manditory to attend through out your week as well to teach your loved one how to cope, handle recovery, handle triggers, learn to communicate, anger management, music therapy, ect.

I am a completely changed person thanks to AFR. i have built life long relationships and a support group there. i honestly owe my life to this facility and will defend it til the day i die. i still have a relationship with many of the clients, and staff members, even including my counselor whom i still use as a counselor. I spent 2 months in treatments at AFR, which were the best 2 months of my life, the 2 months that ultimately saved my life.

To anyone who thinks they care about money, I spent 2 months there. i could have got out in 1, but the staff slowed me down as they did not feel id be ready that soon.  My ending bill? $873. From the labs run at detox to check me for any diseases i may have so that they could treat me if i had had any. Only because the hospital that ran the tests, didnt accept my insurance.

Media Attention

AUTHOR: M.Cate - (USA)

POSTED: Thursday, October 21, 2010

Paul I am sorry to hear about the stress and worry this facility caused you, your wife and your daughter.

Your report is so similar to others, I too ( like Standfree) check and follow all reports on "A Forever Recovery" in the hopes that they will be closed down.

I am a former "client". I lasted about 3 days there  before I realized their game and got myself out.  My report is on this site as well.  They try and muscle people into silence by signing contracts that forbid them to talk about their experience there.  Now THAT is also a red flag!

This place is a scam.  Plain and simple. I was there.  I experienced first hand every "flag" you mentioned.

Other Rip-Off by A Forever Recovert reporters have stated that they filed with Attorney General Office of Michigan and I hope to see a class action suit someday.   In the meantime, media attention ( local and national) needs to be brought to this facility.  I fear the  Attorney Generals Office is not moving fast enough and one of these young clients will one day die from being "dropped off" at a hotel or "mission" by this unscrupulous "treatment facility". Their saleman David may have had his conscience get the better of him. I met David when I was there.

Also, like Standfree - it boggles my mind that this place is allowed to continue to operate.

If any attorneys are reading these reports, please note the standard M.O. of dropping unhappy or protesting clients at hotels or missions without notification to the families and then charging another 5000.00 to re-admit them. It is a set up.  With absolutely NO regard for the clients well being.
