Continental Kennel Club "registration" papers not worth the paper they are printed on! Internet
*Consumer Comment: I'm a CKC top teir breeder

This organization will likely "register" your thumb if you send a couple of photos and the registration fee! Affiliation with CKC does NOT increase the value of your breeding stock...and if you don't know that you DON'T need to be breeding your pet. This organization caters to backyard breeders, puppy mills and below par individuals who are not very savvy. BEWARE purchasing any pet from anyone who boasts CKC registration....

I'm a CKC top teir breeder

I left AKC when I discovered they didn't protect purebred dogs the way they claimed. Lhasa apsos except for the Hamilton line are all part shih tzu, since the breed was introduced to the country in the 1940's. CKC will remove registration from dogs and any puppies they produced if they are declared "dangerous dogs" and AKC does not. If the dog is registered that is that. CKC cares about the integrity of breeds and I like that, which is why I'm proud to have my dogs registered with them.
Incidentally, the lines of all my dog breeds are originally AKC, and I've never registered any stock that wasn't from a known lineage, and presented the AKC papers at the time of registration. I wouldn't attempt registration of a dog that wasn't purebred of a given breed, because your application will be rejected and papers will be denied. As for witnesses, the dog's breeder, their vet, these are credible witnesses that could be used if you found yourself in the position of needing one, but the board still has to approve your dog as proper breed type.
If I produced a French bulldog that had a long pointy snout, even if the parents, grandparents, and great grandparents were CKC registered, the registration on that dog would be revoked. AKC will register it because of breeder merit and parentage. You can't show it, but you can register it. CKC won't allow you to register it, end of story. This is good, because it preserves proper breed type, which is what top teir breeding is all about. People who make claims that CKC is not a real registry have clearly not done their research, nor are they members in good standing with the club, which I am.
This being said, clubs don't make a good breeder, the breeder is independent whether CKC or AKC. The purpose of a registry is to track and record the lineage of a dog. They are the advocate for dog fanciers, breeders, and showman. I'm proud to be a part of their kennel club, and I'm proud to be producing some of the best dogs in the breeds I raise. Any breeder who puts heart and soul into what they do, regardless of kennel club, will say the same. Think about this though: Publix and Piggly Wiggly. They are both grocery stores where you can buy food.
Is one more "real" than the other? Or do you shop at one over the other due to personal preference with a similar service? I've been a quality breeder for over 20 years, and I own a professional kennel of CKC Registered and AKC registered dogs.

Two witnesses?

Sorry, I stand by my report the CKC papers are useless (except to those individuals who MUST have a piece of paper to prove their pet's worth. Mine have no papers...and are priceless). Rebuttal suggests CKC fail safe to remain legitamate is two witnesses. Would my mom and my brother count as witnesses? How about my two best friends? Maybe my friend the dog trainer and another backyard breeder friend. How about two people I pay to swear that what I say is true? Give it up, CKC will never, ever reach status on par with a "Westminster" show...who in the legitamate show world brags their dogs are registered with CKC papers? Name one. I'm not being a snob I'm being a realist...look at the people who boast CKC papers, they are not top tier breeders or handlers but rather low tier wannabes.

The Benefits of CKC Registration
AUTHOR: CKCpr - (USA)

Continental Kennel Club has rapidly become one of the top registries in the United States as well as other countries. CKC was established nearly 25 years ago to offer an alternative, more affordable, and hassle-free registry for dog breeders and enthusiasts. There are many benefits to registering a dog with CKC. Doing so creates a permanent record of the dog’s identity, provides security and proves ownership, and adds value to the dog’s pedigree. In addition to these benefits, dog owners become a lifetime member of CKC, thereby gaining access to a variety of educational resources and support.
We do register dogs that are known purebreds whose registration papers with another registry have been lost, destroyed, or stolen. In these cases we require 2 witnesses to verify the dog is purebred and 5 photos (one from eachside, one from the front and rear, and a closeup headshot) to verify the dog is ‘of proper breed type’. According to CKC Registration Rules, a dog must be purebred and ‘of proper breed type’ to be registered as a purebred dog. If a dog is represented as purebred by the owner and two other witnesses, its registration can still be challenged if it is not ‘of proper breed type’. The pictures that are submitted with these registration applications give us insight into whether a dog is of proper breed type or not. And, CKC will deny registration for any dog that is not of proper breed type no matter what type of verification that is submitted for that dog. For example, registration for a dog may be received on a puppy application with CKC registered parents or on a canine application submitted with registration papers from another kennel club, and still be denied registration if it comes to our attention that it is not ‘of proper breed type’.
Continental Kennel Club does not condone or promote “puppy mills”. The majority of CKC registrations come from individuals, not large commercial breeding operations. In 2006, two percent of our members were registered as kennel owners (a kennel owner being someone that has ten or more dogs registered). And, of those ordering applications for litters in 2006, only 10 percent were listed as kennels with CKC.
To deal with unscrupulous dog owners, CKC maintains a strict set of Registration Rules that all members are expected to adhere to and abide by, whether they be individual dog owners, breeders, or kennel owners. CKC enforces its registration rules, policies and procedures among all of its membership through program checks, customer feedback, and a formal complaint process. In dealing with a complaint, CKC employs a wide latitude of investigative tools, including on-site inspections, professional tests, and document-gathering to determine the merits of a reported abuse of the registry.
Occasionally, we receive complaints about breeders using the CKC registry who are suspected of “puppy mill” practices. If such a documented complaint is made concerning a CKC member, a file is opened, and we begin an investigation immediately. If the breeder is found to be unethical in their breeding practices or care of their dogs, their club member privileges will be suspended and/or revoked according to Rule 6b of the Continental Kennel Club Registration Rules. Rule 6b states: “CKC reserves the right to refuse registration to any person or to revoke or suspend the club member privileges of any member who acts in a manner that CKC deems unethical, fraudulent, or dishonest.” In addition, Rule 6a states: “CKC reserves the right to refuse registration to any person or to revoke or suspend the club member privileges of any member who is convicted of a crime of cruelty to animals in any state, province, or country."
