Sounds like you were in the Digital Home Advantage promotion (the most popular), which LEASES equipment to you for the term of your service. When you cancel, the system automatically sends you packing materials and instructions to return the LEASED equipment to Dish Network. It's in section 5 of the residential user agreement, as well as disclosed any time you acquire such leased equipment (initial sale, Dish'n It Up, etc.). If the agent who disconnected your account didn't tell you that you had leased equipment and had to return it, well, they've probably told quite a few other people the same thing, and he will be caught by QA and disciplined appropriately. However, that doesn't mean you don't have to return the equipment, and the fact that you've now been billed doesn't mean you can't get those charges reversed.
Here's what you need to do: if you never did get boxes to send your equipment back in, call 800-333-DISH (800-333-3474). Once you get through to an agent, explain you need return boxes sent to you. When those boxes arrive, pack up your receivers, remotes, and the LNBF (part that sticks out in front of the dish face) in the boxes as the included instructions indicate. Once securely packed, send them back via the prepaid UPS shipping labels included with the boxes. After receipt of said boxes, the testing department will examine the units to ensure there is no damage & wipe their memories (and hard drives, if you had any DVRs), then remove the equipment from your account and reverse the fees - all in all, once the testing department receives your equipment, it could take 7-10 business days for the equipment to be removed from your account. If you have already paid any or all of the equipment fees, you will need to contact Dish Network (same number as above) to begin the process of having your money refunded. Depending on payment method, it could take 6-8 weeks for your refund to be processed - an agent with your account open would be able to give you a more accurate timetable.
