Sent me a letter claiming I owed Resurgent Capital sevices $899.60 but will settle for $539.76. I have never even heard of this company. The letter was addressed to me at my fathers address in Ny, however, I have lived in NC long before he received his new mailing address

These lowlife are junk debt buyers and most likely bought that debt for less than a penny on the dollar, and is most likely very old and past the legal statute of limitations for collections.
It could be an old debt you forgot about from 15-20 years ago, or belongs to someone with your same name.
Just send them a DEBT VALIDATION request where you clearly dispute the debt and demand to see whatever you allegedly signed to create the "debt" as well as a full account history and itemization of all charges.
Send this by certified mail, return reciept requested. Be sure to put the certified# on the letter itself, and keep a copy for your records. This is very important.
