I made a mistake before. I put my info in the place where the company should go, so please ignore first information. I was contacted by vantage Press regarding a book of poems I had written ed. They promised they would help me out and all they did was charge me over six thousand dollars and did not do anything they said they would. Then after a few months they informed me my book wouldn't sell and I walked away with six thousand dollars less. I am really upset and disgusted. I am glad I found your site. Please disregard the first info I had sent over. Thank you. Sara .

#2 Consumer Suggestion

Get a publisher!

AUTHOR: Rocky - (U.S.A.)

Vantage Press is not a rip-off. They will print your book and they charge you for it. That is their business. I am sure if you read your contract you will find they have no responsibility for marketing your book.

Any author should know they should get their manuscript read by a reputable publisher before spending money for printing. If the manuscript is good enough, it can be printed in a small number to see if it sells.

Im sorry, but.....

I believe you are sincere and good hearted and I truly feel for you here. However, you used a "Vanity Publisher" which essentially means that they will publish and print your book on an "as needed" basis but are in no way responsible for marketing or selling said book.
Also, to expect to make over $6000 on a book of poems is extremely unrealistic as even a new novelist at a reputable publisher can consider himself blessed to make that amount (their are exceptions of coarse.)
Vanity Publishers are banking on the fact that you will be able to sell copies of your work to family and friends (at a nice upcharge) but they know the chances of your ever making profit are slim to none.
Sorry this has happened but I assure you if you read your contract with them you will see that they more than likely did live up to their agreement with you.
There are websites out there (I am not sure if I can link so I will not) all about writing, publishing etc. and you will find a plethora of horror stories there of people using those services to "self publish.".....In many cases you will even find that they "own" the copyright and if you decide to try and publish through someone else they will charge you even more (within a certain time frame I believe.)
Although I have never dealt with any of these companies that promote self publishing I have read quite a bit on the subject and before plopping down another 6 grand I would suggest you do the same.
I am truly sorry though.
