About 3 years ago I've received notification in the mail that Wachovia is pursuing a debt they are claiming I owe them. They've threatened to ruin my credit, threatened to make it so that I can "never get another bank account again" and other such things.
The weird part?
I've NEVER had an account with Wachovia IN MY LIFE!
How can I owe money to a bank I've never banked with? How can I owe money to a bank who's never been able to claim me as an account holder?
Why is wachovia attempted to collect a 200+ dollar debt from a person who's never had an account with them, never had a credit card with them, and never had a loan with them?

One or two things has happened. 1) you have had your idenity stolen or 2) someone is trying to steal your idenity. I would pull all 3 of your credit reports and call Wachovia about this.

The debt could be from an account or loan with a bank that has since merged with Wachovia. In the paperwork you received was there any account number or anything to identify what product (account, loan, card, etc) the debt is for? There should have been a contact phone number. You can call the phone number to find out about the debt. Another option would be to call the 1-800-WACHOVIA line and by using your SSN see if any account info comes up. We may not be able to give you full information but we could tell you if we see an account or loan that has been closed to help you try t identify where this came from. It may have been one from a previous bank or a case of identity theft (someone opening an account with your information). Please call to get information. I would also recommend that you review your credit reports to see if any other unrecognized items appear on it. This could be further proof of ID theft.

Wachovia may have acquired another bank with which you DID have an account. It would serve you well to contact them and find out exactly what it is that they are trying to collect. If it turns out to be mistaken identity, your ignoring it will never get it cleared up.

Sprint has tried the same thing with me for a while, I finally wrote a letter explaining I have never had an account with you, so provide evidence I owe this amount of money. I never got anything in return and nothing showed up on my credit.
