I made several purchases (4 or 5) at Michaels craft store over a 30 day period.  I used my credit card for each purchase.  I returned items on 3 of the receipts.  On the third return, I recieved a "Warning" return.  When I asked what that meant, I was told that any further returns made within 60 days may be refused.

I was making returns according to THEIR return policy, meaning within 60 days WITH a receipt.  I've never made a return without one (as she had suggested).  I was told to call and order a printout out from a company called The Retail Equation.  The woman I talked to was a bit perplexed because even SHE could see that all my returns were made with a receipt.

Michaels is not following their OWN return policy.  This has got to be illegal!!  If I had to wait 60 days to make any further items, they will refuse the return.  MY RECEIPTS WILL BE EXPIRED BY THEN!

I was told I would have to accept an instore credit for any further returns in that time period.  Essentially, they are not only making me pay off the credit card bills in full, but forcing me to respend the same amount of money AGAIN in their store by wanting to give me instore credit only, instead of a credit back to my credit card AS THEY SHOULD!

On the advice of my credit card company, I have stopped payment on those transactions until this mess can be worked out.  I refuse to have to pay twice for items that could easily be returned according to the documented return policy.

My Plan Worked!!!!!!!

AUTHOR: Cyd - ()

POSTED: Sunday, February 02, 2014

Ah ha!!  Disputing the charges and reporting it to the BBB was the perfect solution.  My complaint was heard by Michaels loud and clear.  Not only did I receive a HUGE apology from the company, but I received a refund of every single penny back to my credit card, even though the returns ended being done long after the 60 day period.  The store took too long to figure things out on their end (they admitted wrong-doing), but were able to make it right in the end.  My credit card company told Michaels that I was in the right, they were in the wrong, and they would not be paid any owed amount unless they accepted my partial receipt returns and refunded my money to me and my credit card.

If anyone has this problem in the future, instead of calling the number on the receipt that they give you, call       1-800-MICHAEL to complain.  I could have avoided this whole headache had I been told that to begin with.  It wasn't until the apology came through that they said: " Oh, nobody told you to do that??"  Idiots.  Nice try.

Correction

They gave me a receipt that had printed on it that I couldn't make any further returns for 60 days, in which time my receipts would be expired.  It's the bone headed cashier that told me "future returns may be refused".  Again, Michaels doesn't have THEIR story straight.

I don't need another parent, thank you.

None of the items were "opened" or used.  If a store doesn't want to have to take back new and unused returns, then they should sell everything as a "final sale".  It's that simple.  There aren't any awards for those that DON'T make returns.

The BBB got me results!!

I guess the store cares more about their reputation than you do.  I reported the case to the Better Business Bureau.  They have a lot more clout than you do.  The manager has "invited me back to the store to complete my transactions". I can't believe how harsh and rude you are.  Get a life!

Why

AUTHOR: ramjet - ()

POSTED: Tuesday, September 24, 2013

Why do you return most of the stuff you buy?  I can count on one hand the items I've returned in my whole life. It makes you look like you are pulling some kind of scam.  Are you? Also, if you have opened the items, they may not be able to sell returned items and they lose money.  I sure don't buy merchandise which has been opened. You are being unreasonable. Try to make sure you're buying things you actually want.

You are abusing your right of returns

AUTHOR: coast - ()

POSTED: Tuesday, September 24, 2013

"There's nothing on my receipt that says I'm limited to a certain number of purchases or returns WITH a receipt."

'Michaels reserves the right to limit returns or exchanges' covers that. You are abusing your right of returns.

"On the advice of my credit card company, I have stopped payment on those transactions until this mess can be worked out."

You were warned that future returns "may be refused". That does not give you the right to dispute any current charges. Apparently you told your credit card issuer a different story otherwise they would not make that recommendation based on the story you have posted here.

Receipt printout ignorant of it's own policy

AUTHOR: Cyd - ()

POSTED: Monday, September 23, 2013

There's nothing on my receipt that says I'm limited to a certain number of purchases or returns WITH a receipt.  It merely states to return items within 60 days with a receipt.  If there are more detailed or further policies, they either need to post them in writing in the store, or on the receipt.  I'm not a mind reader.  Hiding them in the online site is deceptive at best, if that is where you found what you're referring to.

Your response makes me think that you are not FOR the consumer, but more likely AGAINST the consumer.  I thought this was a site for consumers, not employees or businesses looking to be irate.  If anyone has any CONSTRUCTIVE advice, I would be open to suggestions.

Here is the part of their return policy you left out...

"Michaels reserves the right to limit returns or exchanges."

"I returned items on 3 of the receipts."

YOU are one of the people abusing the return policy and hence the new policy.

Guess you either didn't read or comprehend the terms of the program.

Where's the Ripoff?
