My wife did purchase a car rent from Hertz on price line, paying it 100% with credit card. When we arrived to Phoenix clerk on the counter asked if we want to add secondary driver for extra $10 a day? We did not want, since I am one who usually drive a car. Fighting with his computer for 20 minutes clerk says that he can not change driver(he have no idea why) so he will add me as secondary driver free of charge.
Next question he asked if I want to purchase a gas? As he says we can purchase a gas on $4.01 a gallon, and average price on street is $4.15. I agreed to purchase a tank.
During our travel I did run out of gas and stopped by gas station buying full tank for about $61. When I return car I was given bill for $135. Even I did return it with almost half of tank.
On my questions I was explained that gas was $65 + I was charged TAX on gas (clerk forgot to mention that their price not include TAX as gas stations do) + another TAX they call facility TAX. Plus I was charged $40.00 for adding secondary driver!!
To be late for my flight I did not have much time to argue about the charge and gas I left in the car, but it was last time I used Hertz, and will strongly recommend anybody not to use it company and for sure DO NOT pay for a gas. IT IS RIP OFF.

HERTZ EMPLOYEE MISREPRESENTED FPO CHARGE

AUTHOR: Ripoffstopper21 - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, December 26, 2012

I just returned a Hertz rental car in Las Vegas and at the time I rented it the employee said "Do you want the fuel option? It's a lot cheaper than buying gas and bringing it back full since we only charge $3.07 a gallon" (current gas station price is $3.20). "A lot of people choose this because it is so much cheaper".
No mention of the fact I was already screwed because the tank was at 3/4 when I rented it and the receipt said 8/8 of a tank. No mention of any of the taxes, no credit for fuel in tank on return or accompanying surcharge either. He made it sound like I would be a dummy if I didn't take the FPO so I did. The car has a 13 gallon tank and I got billed for $47.56.
Obviously Hertz employees are told to PUSH THIS OPTION and this one truly did, all the while lying about it. IT'S A COMPLETE RENTAL SCAM ON INFREQUENT RENTERS!!!

Some correct information

AUTHOR: Anonymous - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, November 14, 2008

Some of the information that I am reading is correct. When you rent a car on Priceline, Obitz or another internet site, the only person that can pick up the car is the name on the rez. The one piece of information missing and I would have checked on is weither they should have charged for her spouse to drive. In the state of Iowa a spouse drives for free. So even theough his wife ordered the car and her drivelers license and credit card would have to match. The husband would be able to drive at no added charge.

As to the fuel purchase, you purchase a full tank of gas and the company expects you return it empty. They make a ton of money from people that don not. But the CSR at the counter should have explained that there were no refunds on remaining fuel. Even through if you had the time you shuld have stopped by the counter on the way out, and discussed this problem with the senior CSR or a counter manager. I do not know how many times during a day, we would change the fuel charges to keep the customer happy.

#1 UPDATE Employee

Did you not read your terms and conditions?

AUTHOR: Dirtysteve - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, July 27, 2008

When you purchase something on a pre-paid site like Priceline, be it a rental car, hotel, or airline tickets, you have purchased them from that site. Not from the company providing the service. It works like this...Priceline buys a "voucher" for a car from Hertz at $20.00 a day. Priceline then sells you that voucher for $35.00 a day. When your wife purchased the car, Priceline sold it to her. That is why the name could not be switched to your name. Hertz has no controll over that reservation. We can't even see the price you paid for it.

As for the issue with the fuel, Hertz has three refueling options. You can replace any unused fuel on your own before you bring the car back. You can select the fuel and service charge, where you bring the tank back as is, pay the average local rate (which in your case seems to have been $4.15 a gallon) plus a one time fee of $6.99. You chose the third option which is the Fuel Purchase Option. By doing so, you agreed to pay Hertz $4.01 per gallon for the whole tank of gas. By doing so, you agreed to return the tank on empty, and saving 15 cents per gallon over the pump price. The verbage we are required to use explains this to you. If for some reason the rep did not use the correct vebage, every location has signs explaining the fuel options. Under each price for the FPO it states "there is no refund for unused fuel". You were explained these charges, and agreed to them, yet you chose to fill the car up.

As for the facility tax, that is a tax issued by local airport boards, and Hertz has no controll over them. In fact, no matter what car rental place you choose, you are going to have to pay the tax.
