Received a call today from a representative at Key Bank indicating my account was overdrawn by $400.00. I advised her that would be impossible as I only use a debit card for my account. She advised me that the overdrafts would stand and that I needed to come to the bank to pay the balance. She further advised me that my 7 separate debits were covered by the bank and they took a $37.00 fee each time (even though my account was depleted). I repeated myself and advised her that I only used the account as a debit account and did not have any recurring withdraws or checks issued on the account. How can my debit card get repeated approval at a merchant when the account is empty?

I have no choice but to pay the fees and close the account.

Key Bank Ripped me off and there is nothing I can do about it.

YOU opted into overdraft protection...

AUTHOR: Truth Detector - (USA)

POSTED: Sunday, November 27, 2011

For years overdraft whiners complained that they wanted debit card transactions declined once the account balance wasn't high enough to pay the charges. Check register proponents advised overdrafters to simply manage their finances in a responsible manner.

The powers that be saw fit to nanny irresponsible people by mandating AUTOMATIC OPT OUT of debit card overdraft services. In other words, unless you ASK for the bank to pay your debit card overdrafts, it wouldn't happen.

This one is on YOU. Not only did you fail to track your purchases properly, but YOU asked for the bank to cover them and the costs that accompany the service.

No rip-off here...

A Little Education About Debit Cards

AUTHOR: Tom - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, November 27, 2011

A store does not get to have money transferred from your account the instant you use your debit card.  This is very similar to how checks are processed.  It may not happen until the store closes and submits all its transactions.  Or it may not happen until the bank processes all its incoming transactions that night (or even later).

It always is your responsibility to keep track of your spending.   Every bank will be the same as this one.

You weren't ripped off

You weren't ripped off. You were penalized for overdrawing your account.

You can opt out of overdraft coverage or simply maintain a check register.

Did you even bother check your balance, either online, by phone or ( best of all ) going to your local branch ????  I guess not, as you failed to mention that.  Cretin.
