I have had pet insurance through Banfield pet hospital (located in Pet Smart Stores) 2 years on Nov 19, 2017. I have it automatically billed to my charge card the 19th of every month. I took my dog in for her 6 month ck up per their request on 12/8/17. The bill always shows what the retail price would be if you didn't have insurance and what it is for you. It is usually free for the 6 month exam and immunizations but I had a additional thyroid test done this last time and paid for that at the time. I decided that I should cancel this insurance as I have had to take her to another veterinary hospital as the staff turnover at Banfield is frequent and there was always a new vet. When I called to cancel, I was informed that I would have to pay the difference that I would have had to pay if I hadn't had insurance! My only choice was to continue paying until the amount was paid in the monthly fees or pay the $175.00 difference now in order to cancel.

I looked on the original contract and it states: IF A MEMBER CANCELS FOR ANY REASON (INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO DEATH OR LOSS OF PET OR TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP), WHETHER BEFORE OR AFTER PROVIDER HAS RENDERED SERVICES, PROVIDER SHALL BE ENTITLED TO RETAIN THE ENTIRE MEMBERSHIP FEE PROVIDER SHALL ALSO BE ENTITLED TO RETAIN OR RECOVER FROM MEMBER ALL MONTHLY INSTALLMENTS THAT THAT HAVE PREVIOUSLY BEEN PAID, OR BECOME DUE. INCLUDING THE INSTALLMENT FOR THE MONTH IN WHICH CANCELLATION OCCURS, REGARDLESS OF THE REQUEST DATE. IN ADDITION, UPON CANCELLATION PRIOR TO THE END OF THE PLAN YEAR, IF THE TOTAL UNDISCOUNTED RETAIL VALUE PLAN SERVICES/PRODUCTS ALREADY PROVIDED DURING THE PLAN YEAR EXCEEDS THE SUM OF MONTHLY INSTALLMENTS COLLECTED FOR THAT PLAN YEAR, MEMBER SHALL BE OBLIGATED TO DO ONE OF THE FOLLOWING: A. Immediately pay FULL RETAIL FEES for all services or products provided (with all discounts reversed as if the plan had not been in effect for the plan year) to the extent such fees exceed the total of monthly payments received by provider for the plan year or B. Immediately pay the total remaining plan year monthly installments in full if less than the amount described in paragraph (a) or C. Continue making the monthly payments as they become due foar the remaining term of the plan year then in effect. This information is on page 3 of a 4 page contract. One would not think you have to be an attorney and read all the fine print just to get pet insurance. Is this not the same as myself carrying hospitalization, becoming hospitalized and then an month later cancelling my insurance and being told that because I chose to cancel, I will have to pay the hospital bill as if I had no insurance when hospitalized ???
