In November of 2008 Barclays Bank of Delaware accepted and approved an on line application for a Sea Miles MasterCard from my wife although she used my name and Social Security number without my consent/permission to obtain it. I did not find out about this credit card account until a phone call came to the house about the account. When I answered the phone they asked me if I was the card holder, I stated that I don`t have, nor ever had a SeaMiles MasterCard with them. They argued with me and stated that I did! I immediately asked them to close the account and have my name removed since I was not the person who applied for it. A person by the name of Steve Lenderman said it was not possible to remove my name form the account even though I wasn`t the one that opened it. I have asked numerous times to see a paper with my signature on it, they refuse to do so! Why, because they have nothing with my signature on it! I did see the light at the end of the tunnel one evening. I called and told a representative of the situation. She then explained to me that there was an option in the form of a restitution loan for my wife. This women explained to me that my name would be removed as soon as the paperwork was signed by both me and my wife and that I would be free and clear of the account. She stated that the paperwork would be forthcoming in two to three weeks and it just needed to be signed and returned. Well two weeks went by with no sign of the paperwork form Barclays. I made a call to Barclays and got directed to their fraud department saying that the person that I spoke with had no business stating that option to me and that it was not availiable, (Quote un Quote!) Do you think were crazy? why would we offer that to your wife! You can imagine how mad I was after seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and then having it pulled away from me. The person I spoke with, Steve Lenderman asked why would we give your wife a loan? Well Steve, your Bank (Barclays Bank) is the one that gave her the credit card without checking in the first place! I have written numerous letters to our State Congressman (Charles Schumer), State Attorney General (Andrew Cumo) and even the Deleware banking commission (Fred Lou den) with no favorable results. The last letter I received was from a person by the name of Wesley Andersen, with the same results. They all want me to file charges against my wife! Why didn`t the bank check to see if it was actually me that filled out the application? I filled out a credit card application online last year with another bank, they called me two days later before approving it to actually see if it was me! Where are Barclays Banks security procedures? where is a paper with my signature? My rights have been violated by not only my wife but by Barclays Banks. This is absoloutely horrible that their security procedures are so lackadaisical? I WANT MY NAME REMOVED FROM THIS ACCOUNT AND THE PERSONS NAME WHO OPENED THE ACCOUNT LEFT ON IT!!!!!!

- Yes because she committed IDENTITY THEFT. She had enough information to open an account.

Credit cards and most creditors are not going to go through additional steps to verify it is the person actually applying for the loan in most cases. These exceptions include something does not match what is on your credit report(such as address), or you have no credit yet that they can verify against. If you are saying that you were called then that is not the norm, and most likely you triggered some alert for them to do that.
However, you can put a Fraud Alert on your credit report. This REQUIRES them to do the additional verification on any application that pulls your credit report. Now, the problem in your case is that even if they do this, and you are still living together there is a good possibility that your wife would still know enough to "verify" your identity.
If you want to do this you can get a 90 day alert. If you want an extended alert(7 years) you MUST provide them with a police report showing identity theft.

I do not know(and it really does not matter) what your current relationship is with your wife. So this may or may not be something you want to hear. If you do not file fraud charges on your wife you will be held responsible for the debt. Because they will figure(whether it is the cae or not) that you are in this with your wife to defaud them. Now, if you do file fraud charges on your wife you will no longer be responsible for the debt. But you have no control over what they will do to her. Depending on the situation at best they would just require her to pay it back, at worst they would prosecute her and she could end up in jail.
Good Luck.
