I received the Clout Visa card in the mail in about 2003, when I was 18. I’m now 33 and collection agencies still call. I paid off the bill in full every month when I first got it, excited to build my credit. I don’t remember what happened that I fell behind in payments, I had moved out on my own and used it for groceries but somehow it spiraled out of control with excess fees and I gave up trying to make payments because I simply didn’t have the money.

I moved a lot and Clout and I lost track of each other. Years later, despite continued financial distress, I was hoping to start making small payments to improve my credit score and pay back what I legitimately borrowed, but I learned Clout went out of business and there was nobody to get in touch with.

Statute of limitations ran out. Last year I get a call threatening a lawsuit unless I pay $6,000. I didn’t pay that or make any partial payments. Then this week I get two calls- one from a man saying I need to pay $6k and one from a lady telling me the balance is $8k. They’re threatening to use tax form 1099-c against me.

It is now past statute of limitations in every state for collection and there is no company to negotiate with besides collection agency and they don’t sound too negotiable. Honestly I would have liked to pay back what I charged to the card 15 years ago, which was probably a few hundred bucks, but I’m not going to cooperate with financial terrorism.

Clout clearly preyed upon young and inexperienced people. This was a predatory company, and whoever is cashing in now should be investigated. Probably some of the same entities.
