I bought a "Build Up" PC in June of 2002. With it was purchased a three year "best they offer" warranty. The unit was purchased with two hard drives, one 60gig and one 80gig.

One year later, the PC won't "Boot-up", at all.
Took it in for repair thinking the warranty will cover the repairs like I was told when the warranty was purchased.

Three weeks later, still no PC repaired, four weeks not yet!

Week five, PC announced repaired; was suppose to be a bad Mother Board and a bad hard drive.

Ok, well they had to order a mother board? What about all those on the shelf, after all they are a computer store.

Then, they said the hard drive was bad. They had to order that too, they said. It's a Western Digital. They have lots of them on the shelf there so why not use one of those? Not only did they replace my 80gig hard drive with a 60 gig hard drive, but then lied about doing it. They never said they were going to reduce the size of the hard drive, not one call about that.

Then they said the warranty does not cover it, that had to be handled thru Western Digital. Huh? This PC with warranty cost $1714. This warranty and their store both SUCK!

#2 Consumer Comment

Thx James for the info on my report on CompUSA

AUTHOR: Alta - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, December 29, 2003

Thanks James for the info. It took over two months to get the PC back from CompUSA. It did not work properly when I got it back either. Had to do lots of additional work on it. Could have taken back to them, but was afraid I would never see it again.I ask for a technician to come out (since take is also paid for by the warranty) but the store said thet did not have anyone to send out... None of the programs worked. The PC did not want to shut now. It did not want to boot up. I could not install programs I had that use to be on it. It was a mess. Finally I have learned enough (by listening to people who know how to work on PCs and reading books) that I have it working now...I think...LOL.
The moral of this story is, I will never have CompUSA build anything for me..plus I won't ever spend the money for another warranty. You listed the things that have a mfg. warranty, and thats all I need. To think, for the money I spent for a warranty I could have bought 2 more PCs! DUH!
Thanks again for the info.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

don't be fooled products carry there own warranty

AUTHOR: James - (U.S.A.)

In responce to your problem I feel for you. They should have told you about the warranty items. I have been into the computer biz for 7 years now building and repairing. I can tell you for a fact that until jan of 2003 western digital the maker of your hardrives carries a 3 year warranty on their products. Like most of the parts in your computer they also carry at least a 1 year warranty and even up to 5 years the only thing that never comes with a long warranty is the CPU it self those are around 30 day to 1 year max. Word to the wise warranties offerd on computers are not needed 99 percent of the time. In the 500 plus computers I have built I have only had one come back for repair and it was 4 years old. It cost the owner nothing the part was covered by the manufacture still.

Here is a list of computer products that carry 3 year warrnty

Wester Digital on products prior to manufacture of jan 2003
Maxtor
Seagate
Fugi

The rest carry at 1 year warranties

CPU'S
intell 1 year on BOX units
30 days on OEM'S
AMD 1 year on BOX units
30 days on OEM'S

and most ram is lifetime
