I have been insured by Geico for several years now.  But the past two years, GEICO has attempted to falsely raise my rates by claiming that I'm not reporting enough mileage.  Every six months they raise my rates by $300/six months, claiming that the vehicles that I am reporting only 5,000 miles per year must be raised to $12,000 miles per year "because that is the national average".

However, my husband and I own four vehicles.  We each drive one vehicle to work, which means that the other two vehicles are only used sporadically.  We have seriously overreprted the mileage by reporting each of them at 5,000 miles per year, our actual usage has been closer to 1,000 mile sper year for our truck and about 2,000 miles per year for our other vehicle.

This issue is going to get worse - since I just switched jobs from one that was 50 miles away to one that is 2 miles from my home.  Now I will have three vehicles that are less than 5,000 miles each.

My husband commutes 30 miles each way from work approximately 16,000 miles - so I can't just underreport his mileage to make mine balance.

My husband and I are homebodies - so when we do actually travel - it's in one car - not all four.  They are demanding that we provide proof back 18 months of mileage through service records - but my husband is a car guy and does his own maintenance.  We have taken pics of the odometer with a newspaper to prove the date.  We have provided mileage through smog reports - but that is not enough.

We are being treated as though we are trying to cheat GEICO. But all the proof is not enough, and we have to provide it every six months like they have never heard this story before. I am getting really irritated and I feel cheated.

I have filed claims before - but it's never been my fault and the customer service provided by GEICO is abysmal. They just tell us to deal with the other company directly.  They never waive the deductible - they make us collect it from the other company.

How can they just kneejerk increase our mileage to increase our rates, even when we provide proof that we are already overreporting the mileage on these vehicles?  when i mentioned that my new job necessitated a mileage change they said they had to base it on my past history not what my new histroy would be - how can they do that?  especially with a difference of this magnitude?

This is a rip-off and indicitive of predatory practices to artificially inflate our premiums.  This should be outlawed.

So even providing proof did not help.

Let me make this entirely clear, There have been no tickets, or claims where we have been at fault.

I did provide documentation of the lower mileage through the use of smog reports and pics of the odometer.  My actual mileage was significantly lower that what I had previously reported.  I still got an increase in my insurance rate - this time with no explanation.  So I stand by my original report.

If other people are underreporting - I don't blame them if this is how GEICO is going to treat them. I now work 1.6 miles from my home - instead of 47 miles from my home and my rates went up.  How does GEICO justify that?  My truck has sat in our driveway for the past six month - with only 146 miles of which 60 were to and from the smog center.  I had previously reported 5,000 miles because Geico refused to accept less.  My 2006 Mustang sat in the driveway the past six months with only 476 miles - of which 60 was to and from the smog center.  And again GEICO would not accept less than 5,000 miles.  And every six months when I go through this exercise again - they try to raise the truck and the Mustang up to 12,000 miles each. They have no problem with accepting mileage of over 12,000 on the other two vehicles - but they have to question these two vehicles because  -"the average use of a vehivle is 12,000 miles per year".  Sure, when there is oone vehicle one driver.

And where is my savings for the daily commute reduction on the third vehicle?

And why do I have to got through this exercise EVERY six months, with rate increases EVERY six months?

This is FRAUD pure and simple.

If you disagree with the annual mileage, there is a mileage questionnaire that you can complete and return to update the policy. GEICO is not trying to make things difficult for you; however, many people DO provide lower annual mileages to get lower rates. Blame those who DO under-report.
