In April of this year (what is left of it) 2007 my wife was driving home from work doing about 55mph in heavy traffic driving our 6000 lb Chevy Avalanche. As she was driving, the right rear driver's side tire failed, blowing out while she was in the left lane. Luckily she was able to get over to the shoulder and stop without crashing. I came home from work and on my way into town came to where she was and changed the blowout with the spare. I took the tire to the local Goodyear dealer, Action Gator to find out why the tire failed and what they were going to do about it. They inspected the tire visually and with a flashlight to look for a puncture from a nail or other road debris. There was no puntures so they took the tire and filled out a form to have it sent to a plant somewhere in GA where supposedly it would be x-rayed. I asked for a copy of the form or some sort of receipt but was told that I could not have one, they don't give them out. Check back in a few weeks I was told by the manager. They wanted to sell me a new tire to which I replied that I would not buy another tire til I found out what happened to the blowout tire, by the way they wanted 225 bucks for the replacement. Well I checked back in about four weeks and no, they had not gotten any word about the tire. Six weeks later I checked back, still nothing. Eight weeks later, nothing. Keep in mind my wife is riding on the spare all this time. I asked for an explanation as to why this is taking so long and they didn't know. I called the Goodyear corporate office and spoke to customer no-service. They couldn't/wouldn't do anything. They said that they were unable to call the plant to find out why they haven't looked at my tire. I asked if I could call this plant and they said no, only the dealer could call. I went back to the dealer and told them what their corporate office had told me to which they said that they called but the plant people didn't answer them. I have a claim number for the tire and another number related to the claim and as of December 23rd, over EIGHT MONTHS later my tire has still not been inspected or a credit issued and no explanation or time when I can expect an answer. I have learned that the individual dealers get the credit for the failed tires if issued from the factory. I don't know if that is the case here but it certainly makes me wonder. I know one thing, I filed a consumer complaint about them with the government office and still nothing. It's a big joke to them, they make you run around back and forth between the dealership and the factory while they point fingers at each other and waste your time. Well it's obvious to me that they don't care about me or my familes' safety and will choose another brand when replacing these factory tires. Good luck to you if you have a problem with Goodyear, you'll call them but they won't call you. Daniel St. Cloud

#12 Consumer Suggestion

You bought it from an independent dealer...not Goodyear.

AUTHOR: Tickedoffatfoxlakeford - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, May 12, 2009

Sounds like you bought the tires from an independent dealer, not a Goodyear Gemini. Did you rotate them every oil change like you're supposed to?

So, your wife probably ran over a nail and it's Goodyear's fault? Unbelieveable.

would like to see the answer

AUTHOR: Dan - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, January 03, 2008

i also would like to know the nature of the blow out but as stated before low air pressure is #1 killer of tires.
as asked does the veh have a tire pressure monitoring system ?
as for being a manager for action gator and trying to put out fires you are off base
i stated that i do know several managers/employees of action tire as my job cause {fleet manager} cgives me the opportunity to deal with them on a near daily basis.
i do have and am solicited by several dealers near daily some give a little better pricing but none give the service that i demand if our vehicles are down we are down. not trying to slam you but don't slam someone else for trying to do the job .
in closing if you reflect on your actions and attitude with them i'm sure you wouldn't want to deal with you either

I can tell you what caused the blowout

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, January 02, 2008

The exact same thing that causes 99+% of all blowouts. underinflated tires on an overloaded vehicle.

Your truck requires truck tires, not passenger car tires. Most people are too CHEAP to buy LT tires, so they hope the car tires will do the same job. There's a reason trucks come with truck tires.

If you had LT tires on it, they were underinflated and/or overloaded. If you had passenger car tires on it, they were obviously overloaded.

My question is this though, the Avalanche has tire pressure monitoring as an option. Did yours, and if so, was the light on?

My last words on this issue

AUTHOR: Daniel - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, January 02, 2008

I find it comical that Robert from CT and Dan from Orlando Fl both with negative remarks posted within minutes of one another. Did you guys just get off the phone or did you email each other on how you would attack my posting? The spare tire, ROB, is a full-sized Firestone Wilderness tire, same size as the Goodyear, not some little donut tire and it was used for over eight months waiting for an answer from Goodyear.

Do I care about my family, ROB? Come on down to St. Cloud, ROB, and get lippy with a member of my family and find out for yourself, ROB. In regards to Dan who has twenty years in the tire business, I will take your advice and remove the gizmos and just check the tires every weekend with my heavy-duty pressure gauge.

Now since both you guys seem so worked up over my complaint and have taken to attacking me you still haven't addressed the issue over having to waste so much time and energy getting an answer to what caused a blowout. Dan, am I being unreasonable in being frustrated just trying to find out what happened to my tire, eight and a half months ago?

Is it good customer service for me to have to call and find out that there is a credit waiting for me when the manager of the Action Gator strore said that they would call me when they found out something? Instead of trying to put fires out on message boards from angry consumers by blaming the victim, try making sure to stay on top of things. What is unreasonable is the amount of time elapsing between dropping the tire off and coming to a resolution.

What is unreasonable is trying to turn things around on me, I never wanted to waste tons of time, be aggravated and have to resort to message boards. If you are reading this and not imbedded in the tire industry, I think you can see what is going on here. Members of the tire industry will attack your credibility rather than focus on the issue, it's a classic move, answer a question with a question.

Don't be intimidated by their bullying techniques, if you have a gripe, post it. Maybe with enough bad postings these guys will clean up their act and treat people with respect. Happy New Year to all!

now that you stated the fact that you have those fine little gizmos that turn green when the pressure is correct that changes things.
as i said in the first reply after over twenty years in this industry i do know that the stem caps with the indicators are the worst thing you can get THEY LEAK.

So many have been found to be the cause of under inflation we refuse to sell them the fact that you are a truck driver should tell you that under inflation is a tires worst enemy. throw the caps in the trash tell your wife to go to gator tire twice a month and have the air checked they will do it for free i have had personal dealings with the very good people honest and caring. but they cannot please the unpleasable

Finally, an answer

AUTHOR: Daniel - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, January 02, 2008

I just called the dealership today before emailing the vice-presidents of Goodyear to try to resolve this issue. A credit was issued in the amount of $7.13 for the tire in question. I don't know what caused the tire to fail but since there is money coming back I daresay that low psi is not to blame.

To the poster of buy a tire gauge, THANKS for the amazing insightful advice, gee I never thought of that. As a professional truck driver I guess I never thought to check tire pressure, wow, do I feel silly now. The valve stem devices DO work after all. I'm just glad that I can finally move on but I still harbor resentment for what I perceive as a lack of caring on the part of Goodyear.

What do I take away from this experience? Customer service is not a high priority for Goodyear in my opinion, they are not a consumer friendly company. If you stay on top of them for months you apparently will get your issue resolved however from 4-17-07 to 1-2-08 to get an answer is beyond rediculous to me. I only hope my experience will be of help to someone else in the same predicament.

To clarify a couple of things

AUTHOR: Daniel - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, January 01, 2008

I stated in my original report that the right driver's side tire blew out, well obviously the drivers side is on the left and the left rear tire blew out. I also had a indicator installed on each valve stem that indicated by color if a tire was low on air. Similar to the cat's eye system for the big trucks if the tire was low on air the color would be red however these tires were all green, no psi lower than 32. If someone has any suggestions as to how to stay on top of Goodyear to make them do something, I'm all ears. If they did care about the customer, they wouldn't make them jump through hoops to get answers. Good customer service would try to help you when you have a problem. Most customer loyalty comes not from when you buy something and don't have a problem, instead from buying something, having a problem and the company doing whatever it takes to rectify the issue. Companies that hide and squirm when asked to solve an issue are the ones people never go back to and tell everyone they can about how lousy the company is after the sale. Hence my complaint, maybe it isn't the dealers fault, maybe it is, but from where I'm sitting, I don't care. Just give me an answer or let me know when I can expect an answer. I just bought 4 new tires and guess what? They were not Goodyear, and everyone I've run into that is interested in buying tires I try my best to talk them out of buying from them.

reality

AUTHOR: Dan - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, December 31, 2007

as an individual with over 23 years in the tire industry i do know that 95% off all tire blow out failures are not manufacturer defects.
also the dealers hands are tied and credit to the dealer will not be given untill proper paper work is done and the consumer has recieved a replacement tire.

many times if the dealer gives you a new tire the manufacturer can deny the claim
leaving the bag. the best way to resolve this is to stay on top of goodyear.

most of the time they will cave in just for the shear sake of customer retention.
your situation is not the fault of the dealer and what business would give away a product that has only a 10 to 20 percent mark up in which would require a thousand dollars in sale to make up
