I am so dissapointed with the dishonesty shown by this particular store that I'll never return to another Jack In The Box again. This store is located at 509 South Cumberland Street in Lebanon, TN. I have never complained about any business before like this, but I feel so offended at this point.

My children and I went throught the drive- thru at this store about two weeks ago, and I'll never forget the rudness or the hatefulness with which I was shown.

On July 10, 2008 the three of us decided to get our lunch at Jack In The Box and carry it home and watch a movie together. We ordered our food, which the total came out to be $14.39. We made our way to the window, and I paid with a $20.00 dollar bill, as I only had two twenties and a hundred dollar bill on me, and no smaller bills. The man at the window gave me our drinks and our food. Then he shut the window.

I waited for him to return, expecting that his drawer might have been out of change, or that he was working off a drawer at the front counter instead of the drive thru drawer. We waited several minutes before a young lady came to the window and told us our total would be $XX.XX. I told her we were wating for our change, and that I'd already been given my food. She became very rude, and told me I was causing their "times to go up." I asked to speak to the man who had been at the window a moment ago. He then walked up to the window and said "what?" I explained that he had not given me my change for my order. He told me I was a liar, that he had given me my money, and told me I needed to get a job, and slammed the window.

I stayed at the drive- thru until he finally opened the window and told me that he was calling the police on me. I told him that was fine, that I'd happly wait for them to come. He said that I had my change, and was not getting anything from him. I opened my wallet and showed him that I had no bills smaller than a twenty, and only had $0.12 cents in the change area of my wallet. He said he saw me put it in my purse. I aksed him to count down his register if he really thought I was lying, he said he would not, becaused he did have to and didn't have the time. I told him I had no money in my purse, and the only money that I had on me was what was in my wallet. He then looked and my son (who was sitting in the back seat of my car behind me) and said "your mom's trying to steal from my store and you're all going to be arrested." At that point I asked to speak with the manager, he told me he was the only manager. I told him to call the police and that I would pull up to the front of the store. He said I was banned from returning and he would file a no- tresspassing warrent. I pulled my car up to the front of the store and called the police myself.

The man from the drive- thru never came out, and while on the phone with the police they said it would be a while before they could have a officer come to me because they were very busy with some serious wrecks. The dispatcher told me that I could come up to the police station and wait for an officer, and that she felt I should not stay in the parking lot of the Jack In The Box, because "if that man will talk like that to your child, no telling what he might come out and say or do."

I drove to the police station and waited one and a half hours to speak with an officer. A dispatcher came out and asked exactly what happened, I explained the incident to her. She told me that they were having a very busy day, and appologized about not having an available officer to come speak with me, but offered to send one by my house later if that was acceptable with me. I agreed and left my information with her.

About two hours later an officer came by and I explained what had happened, he said there wasn't much I could do with all the time that had gone by since it happened. He suggested I file this report here and let as many people know what happened as possible.

I was never given a reciept, so I can't even prove I was there that day but I will tell everyone I can about what happened, and how we were treated. I've tried to get in touch with the area manager with no success.

I still don't have my money, but that does not matter this is just plain bad business, and everyone needs to beware. Be careful if you decide to eat here, and count your change!

Almost all fast food outlets have video monitoring inside at the drive thru cash register. This catches problems with people driving off without paying, robberies and shortchanging (or plain cash register theft). What happened to you was 'theft by deception' and is a crime in all states. You should have confronted the manager immediately. He/she could have reviewed the tape quickly and solved the problem. I suspect the manager was not on site when this occurred or may have been involved directly.

Re: Short Changed...

Adolph, thank you for this in site. I had no idea that the Jack In The Box chains were in so much hot water. This is one of my children's top choices for fast food. Since we don't eat out much, they might not notice if we never go to any Jack In The Box again!

I have already decided not to return to this store, but you've enlightened me to a grievous problem with all the chains.

Just wondering has anyone narrowed this outbreak down to a distributor or has it been confined to the Jack In The Boxes themselves? I know many different fast food restaurants sometimes utilize the same food distribution wholesalers.

By the way, if you don't mind, I'd like to forward this information on to all my friends so that they are aware as well. ~ Emt724

Short changed? Maybe they're trying to recoup their losses, eh?

NEWS ITEMS (on the internet): [1] Jack in the Box Settles Food Poisoning Lawsuit For $7.5 Million

SAN DIEGO (AP) - A woman who suffered kidney failure after eating a bad Jack in the Box hamburger reached a $7.5 million settlement with the chain's parent company.

Angela Noble, 19, of Idaho, underwent a kidney transplant to save her life after eating a hamburger contaminated by the E. coli bacteria nearly four years ago. She settled her lawsuit with San Diego-based Foodmaker Inc. on Wednesday.

"It has always been Foodmaker's intent to provide fair settlements to victims deserving compensation as a result of the outbreak,'' said Bruce Clark, an lawyer for the company.

Foodmaker has settled more than 90 lawsuits related to the January 1993 outbreak that sickened several hundred people and killed three children from Washington state.

Settlements that have been disclosed range from $19,000 to $15.6 million. Foodmaker has not released the amounts of all its settlements.

Since the outbreak, Jack in the Box has begun safeguards to make sure its food is bacteria-free.

[2] Analysis
Case Study: Jack in the Box E. coli crisis

On January 15, 1993, the Washington State Health Department alerted Robert Nugent, president of Jack in the Box, that the E. coli outbreak they had been informed of two days earlier, was at least partly attributed to hamburgers purchased at Jack in the Box restaurants (Sellnow and Ulmer, 1995). "Within a month, three children in the Seattle area, all under three, died of E. coli 0157:H7 poisoning - the strain linked to Jack in the Box" (p. 138).

One child had eaten at Jack in the Box, it was thought another was infected by a child who became ill after eating at Jack in the Box, and a cause for the third child's infection was unknown. In total, 400 people were infected with the bacteria in Washington State, Idaho and Nevada. "As a result of this crisis, the Jack in the Box fast-food chain was not only in danger of losing sales, the company's very existence was threatened by the crisis as well"

.........I think I'll pass on their E Coli Bergers ! Dead children? How tragic! Don't give 'em to your pet, even.

Re: All this over $5.61???

AUTHOR: Emt724 - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, July 23, 2008

1. Again, I thought he might have needed to make change, or get smaller bills.
2. Once again, as I stated when I asked to speak with a manager the man told me he was the only manager.
3. Yes, I did go to the police station, which might I add is just around the corner, and yes I did wait for roughly 3 1/2 hours, all total.

*Let me explain here it is very easy for him to copy down my license plate number and call in to the police, to file a trespassing warrant against me. If I am where it happened then I can defend myself to the officer and have my side heard, as well as what little proof I had.
*The biggest reason I waited so long he assulted my son (Battery is the physical laying of hands on another human, assult is the verbal form)! *Asside from that, 5.00 is one gallon of gas and to a mom who lives on a tight budget (when we only eat out twice a month because of gas prices and the economy) thats not a drop in the bucket, its a splash.

All this over $5.61???

AUTHOR: Peter - (U.S.A.)

Why did you not go INSIDE the restaurant to speak with the manager? It is unreasonable to expect to do so from a drive-through window, at which many other people are expecting to receive prompt service.

Also I find it hard to believe you drove to the police station and waited 1 1/2 hours to speak with an officer ... all over $5.61. Surely with children in tow, none of this drama was worth such an insignificant amount of change.

Your story is very hard to believe.
