I am helping my mother organize her finances as she prepares to move into a nursing home.  I notice this charge on her bank statements for $119.95 per month from Lexington Law.  My mom explains she hired them to help repair her credit but she didn't see any improvement.  She tells me to call and cancel.

I called Lexington Law.  The phone prompts said something to the effect of "Press 1 if you are a new customer, Press 2 if you are an existing customer."  I pressed 2 and then sat on hold in the queue for 10 minutes.  At that point I hung up, called back, and pressed 1.  Of course I got right through to a live person.

I explained to the man on the phone that I have POA for my mother, I need to cancel her account, and can I fax or email them a copy of the POA.  The man says only my mother can cancel the account.  I explain again that I have POA ... financial POA ... that authorizes me to open and close accounts on her behalf.  The man says they will not accept my POA that every other organziation accepts ... they will only accept their own.  I'm thankful that my mom is not incapacitated b/c I hate to think if she were and how much trouble I would then have with getting the account closed.  I knew right then and there they were not going to make this easy.  I hung up on them and told my mom to call.

When my mom called, she told them she wanted to cancel her account.  They assured her they are "working hard on her case" and offered to refund the most recent charge of $119.95 and only bill $59.95.  She again stated she wanted to cancel.  They said she still had 6 unfavorable items on her credit report that they are working on and offered to only charge $25/mo.  She said ok.

I had to point out to mom that she has paid Lexington Law a total of $1079.55 and they do not need another dime from her.  She called back again to cancel and finally was able to with the second phone call.
