I used Expedia to rent a car from Payless Car Rental in Seattle, WA.  I had a minor fender bender with my car and it was at the body shop.  So I needed a car while it was being repaired.  I couldn't believe how cheap their prices were online!  So of course I thought I was gettinga  deal.  My husband drove me to the airport to pick up the car.  After I arrived, I waited in the shortest line ever for the longest time ever.  Every customer at the counter had issues with Payless.  After 25 minutes it was my turn.  The NASTY rental agent threw down a peice of paper with the "Local Rental Policy."  For Washington State renters, they require the following: 
1 - Drivers License (ok - seems fair)
2 - $350 deposit (seems high, but ok)
3 - a Utility bill (what?)
4 - an Insurnace card (no - not just the policy number, the ACTUAL card)

I had #1 and #2 above - but not #3 or #4.  Who would ever think to bring those with them?  I finally found the policy online but it was buried pretty deep on their website and not something I would actually look for.   I have been travelling on business and personal travel for 20+ years and have never been asked for these items.  So the NASTY rental agent basically said I had to pay for insurance or I couldn't have the car.  So instead of the $80 that was the contract on the reservation, it would be double that amount.  And I wasn't the only one they were doing this to.  2 people in front of me were also forced to pay for insurance.

Fortunately, I have the financial means to walk away and rent elsewhere.  I went next door to Thrifty and they were absolutely wonderful.  Yes, I paid more but they didn't require ridiculous documents and were actually NICE to their customers.  It was the best service I've ever received.

I hope that someone puts Payless out of business.  Or maybe they will just do that to themselves.  I will never try to rent from them again AND I plan to tell everyone I know about their unfair practices.  Their game is to offer a ridiculously low rate then find some loophole to ensure that the customer - once they are at the counter - has to pay for something else so that they make money on the deal.

Shame on you Payless Car Rental.  Shame on you!
