They lied to me about the contract I signed, it was suppose to be month to month and easily canceled. This is what I was told. After a couple of years I was moving we got everything ready and moved. I had totally forgotten about the membership, I hadn't used it in forever. I called them and told them I wasn't there anymore and could they please cancel it. I was told I had to come in and fill out a cancellation form. When I told them that was impossible she said she would take my name and try to take care of it. Stupid me I actually thought she was telling the truth, and I thought she would actually do it for me. She could have just told me that I could send a certified letter, but she omitted that part because she knew that I could actually do that.

After 3 more months of charges I called back and asked why it had not been canceled? That the girl I talk to said she would take care of it. I was then told what would set the tone for the rest of our interaction together. I don't know who would have told you that, they shouldn't have done that. On this call as well she notices that I'm having problems and again doesn't tell me about the certified letter method. I then cancel my credit card access to them. Come to find out they keep charging me sending the penalties and fees to Vision Financial. A scum bag collection agency that calls your house 9 million times a day and just hangs up if a female voice answers. Thing is that I didn't even live there any more that house was given to my mother and a 60 year old disabled lady had to deal with 20 calls a day. She kept trying to give them my number but they would just hang up. As soon as she told me what was happening I knew exactly who it was and what they were doing. It was the evil no good Pure Fitness.

Now I pay all my bills, I even pay my mothers bills, and for her medicine, as well as paying for a place for my niece to live. I'm not a person who runs from a bill. If I owe it I pay it. But in this case I have to pay, and anyone with an ounce of brains can look at these peoples business practices and know that I don't owe them anything. They don't do anything to help resolve it. They lie to you on the phone, say their going to call you back and never do. I asked them to fax me a copy of the contract I signed and it took 20 phone calls and 2 weeks to finaly get it. It turns out that yes it states I have to come in or send a certified letter. By the time I found this out I was already back in AZ visiting and was going to go in. They faxed me the contract on 6/06/08. I went down to the Pure Fitness on Elliot and Alma School bright and early this morning because I was just livid, I could have avoided this whole mess if they just would have canceled it like they said they were going to or if they had just mentioned that I could have sent a letter I would have never needed to come back.

Once I arrive I'm told that they don't have any forms available for that because their locked in the office, and a general manager has to present so he can try to talk me out of if and offer me free trainer work out sessions, where all they do is try to sell you vitamins, equipment, and crazy insane work out packages. They basically saying yeah you get a free consumer hour where I try to sell you crap for an hour while we barely work out. Then he has to sign it and send it to the corporate office and if they process it without losing it then it will be canceled in 60 days. I've heard horror stories on this very sight about the people who had to keep going in and sending letters because the letters would conveniently vanish or never make there even though their certified.

This company without a doubt is the biggest scam and shady group of people I ever encountered, and one thing is for sure I will never as long as I live get a membership at one of these gyms again or any other one for that matter. The more I read the more I realize that they all do the same deceptive practices. They lie and give you fake incentives to sign up and then rake you over the coals trying to sell you stuff and then when you try to cancel its such a huge problem that their betting you will give up and since the amounts of money here are very small they know its not economically viable to fight them in the courts for misleading and deceptive business practices. I warn you all know get a home gym and never look back because once you get out they pull you right back in and it never seems to go away.

I urge all people who have been conned by these people talk to me and lets see if we can't get several thousand of us with the same complaints. So we can use the power of many to topple the beast that is Pure Fitness. I'm not kidding I work on Wall Street and I have never encountered more red tape, deceptive, black balling practices in my life. They are stealing from us knowing that we don't want a membership knowing that we have canceled, yet they continue to do it. They know it will take you a while to notice they haven't honered your request and then they can get more money and an exrta 60 days worth of payments each billing cyle is passed without cancellling because you have to give them a 60 day notice.

Hey last time I checked were the customer, were the client. If I treated my clients this was I would not only have none I would have a bloody lip. They must not be doing well because if they have to go to these lengths to steal form hard working Americans and not to mention charge a dollar a towel. Can you believe that, I don't know where there mind is but its sure isn't in the heads.

Well take care I hope this helps and feel free to speak with me because I would love some feed back in regards to this, I know many have written about this very thing. Which just proves my point that all these people who don't know eachother, who aren't conspiring to take down a company, all have the same story to tell. I don't know about me but I stopped believing in coincidence's a long time ago. If this many people concur , there has to be something to it.

I'm in...I am currently on a mission to talk to everyone about Pure Fitness bad practice...

AUTHOR: Mel - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, January 14, 2009

I knew that I wasn't the only one with an issue like this. I would really like to get a group of people that have a gripe against Pure Fitness. Maybe this will open their eyes to their sleazy ways...what happened to ethics and professionalism???

This is my experience:
Part 1: the begining
It all began with the reason I decided to stop going in the first place...I was humiliated and embarrassed in front of other members, when the person in charge of the payments proceeded to ask me for membership dues in the walkway in front of the elliptical/treadmills. Let me mention he was not discreet at all, I am sure everyone was aware of my business after he shut his mouth. The kicker was that I had spoken to him the day before about my situation and that i still wanted to go work-out until the date we agreed upon. He agreed over the phone and I though we had it settled, but apparently (I mean, since I am not just a number at Pure Fitness) I thought he would have made a note in the system so that he would remember our conversation at least, but it didn't happen. After that day I refused to go there, or have anything to do with the gym. how could I show my face at a place where they had so little regard for my feelings? That was the same day that I informed him of my decision to end my membership after my year was up.
Part 2: ugh...
You would have thought I would put two n two together....
Consider its ridiculous cancellation policy: After they debited my account for a full year (during which I didn't use their services at all, i didn't want to attend but I chose to fulfill my membership agreement) I had been in the gym and informed an employee(guy mentioned above) that I would be canceling after my year was over, and I was not informed of having to hand write a letter of cancellation, or sign any paperwork. I discovered that I was still being charged, 3 months later. (It took me this long to discover it because it was an account that I stopped using regularly) I contacted the gym to find out what had happened and why they continued to charge me even after I had spoken with one of their employee's and informed him of my intent to cancel. They were very apologetic at first: (email from them)
I am really sorry for the way you were treated. The memberships however continue billing monthly until a cancellation form or letter of cancellation is sent in. I will see if there is something I can do. In the meantime, if you could send in a letter stating you would like to cancel I can get that in motion for you. Everything is documented and kept on file. We do require a signature to cancel the membership just like we require a signature to join. I would like to invite you to come in and see all the improvements we have made to the club- new floor, locker room. etc.... and maybe give us another chance to help you get to the goals you wanted to achieve when you joined. Again, I am very sorry for anything that past employee caused.

After all the inconvenience that I have already been caused I still have to take time out of my busy schedule to drive to the gym and sign. I couldn't do it over the phone, or fax. (which undoubtedly includes another high-pressure sales pitch, like the one they attempted to do in my email). When I proceeded to tell them that I was not interested in their gym any longer they sent me this response:

They prefer us not accepting cancels by fax. You can send the letter to 3202 E Greenway, Phoenix, AZ 85032. The account must be current though. The total owed is $120.00 but it can be settled for $60.00.

Are you kidding me?? What a slap in the face!!! Apparently, they are not so sorry about the way this employee treated me. I am disgusted by this company and I was irritated then majorly pissed because of their incredible arrogance. I'm not one of those whiny consumers who thinks the customer is always right. But here's an example of how not to treat a customer. What ever happened to customer service, better business practice, and ethics??? Something they are definitely lacking...

Not only will Pure Fitness not get another dime from me, I'll blab about this experience to everyone I know, I will blog if I have to. $120 may seem trivial to some, but its the principle behind their actions. Why should a company bite the hand that feeds it, because without us customers, they are just a space with mirrors and machines. Everyone must be informed and made aware of their disregard for their clients. I am sure that I am not the only one who has had an experience like this. If you have had similar experience, or any bad experience I encourage you to pass it around and report it to the BBB also.
