I filed a complaint with the BBB about Afni Inc. They sent me a collection bill for over $2000 for a bill from Verizon in November of 1999. I have never owed this money. I paid all my bills. They sent me a "bill" from the supposed "charges". The "bill" was computer generated and didn't even have Verizon's logo or anything. I never even had Verizon for a phone company!! I called Verizon and they told me that they sold over 2 million of their old accounts to Afni. Outrageous!! I am waiting to hear back from the BBB regarding this.

Why does everyone immediately run to the BBB?

AUTHOR: Steve [Not A Lawyer] - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, March 31, 2007

The BBB has absolutely NO POWER to do anything for you! They are NOT affiliated in any way with any government agency. They cannot force anyone to do anything.

The BBB is a FOR PROFIT business. Period. if you are not a PAYING MEMBER you will NEVER get a "satisfactory" rating from the BBB.

The entire BBB thing is nothing more than an extortion scam.

When dealing with DEBT COLLECTORS the ONLY individual enforcement you can get is with the court system when you sue under the FDCPA and/or the FCRA.

There is NO GOVERNMENT AGENCY at all that will provide you with individual enforcement of your rights under federal law. It is ENTIRELY up to you to get justice for yourself. Period.

You mat get an agency like the consumer affairs division of the attorney generals office to write a letter on your behalf, but thats about it. The collection agency could laugh at them without recourse. They do it all the time.

The answer here is to learn your rights and SUE. SUE THEM NOW!!

Don't get mad, GET PAID!!

BBB was useless with Afni

AUTHOR: Jami - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, March 30, 2007

I filed a complaint with the BBB to try to resolve the bill that Afni sent me. It was useless. They did nothing. The BBB closed the case saying that Afni did their part. That's not true. They did not supply any information to validate this supposed debt. They just kept using generic letters, always with the end of the letter stating: this is an attempt to collect a debt. Well, duh!! They never even investigated the information I gave them.

This debt that Afni says I owe is ridiculous. I do not owe it, and if I did, I would not have been able to establish a new phone number at my new address if I owed this money to that phone company. I also looked at my credit report. It is not on there at all. However, Afni did "look" at my credit. These people are very sneaky. This debt that they say I owe is from over 7 years ago. I think this is past the statute of limitations for them to do anything. I just want them to leave me alone and close this file. I am just at my wit's end with them.

Afni will claim they do not know about your account

AUTHOR: P - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, March 08, 2007

I also reported Afni to BBB of Illinois and their initial response was to claim they had no idea who I was and for me to give more identifying information. The only thing I gave (and I did not accept their response) was THEIR account number. They then said the account had been previously closed and they were sending me a letter. Seems the BBB actually is pretty useless for the most part. I think what has happened is that they got a letter from the Attorney General's office since people are writing and I got a response from the AG's office stating they were investigating.

AFNI Sent me a reply

AUTHOR: Gloria - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, March 06, 2007

Today my husband got his reply from the letter we sent requesting all the info we've been talking about. What did they send us? One bill from Dec. 1997 from GTE. We didn't even have that number in Dec. '1997.

It was actually funny. They sent a bill and some info of being licensed in 3 states but not our state or in the state we use to live in. Bills/Statements are not proof or validation of the debt. The area code is incorrect as well.

My husband got one and I did last month. We moved from one place to another. If we had that account GTE would require us to pay one before we open up another account somewhere else so that didn't make sense to us either.

So far I have not received a response back. I just did another letter to cease all communication as they were unable to validate the debt and told them that the Statute of Limitations has expired. I also mentioned a couple of other things.

This is our first Junk Buyer letter we have ever received. I have learned alot of them.

I also checked my credit report. Sneaky, sneaky. I have excellent credit with no negatives, nor is the debt listed. However, I did notice that they did in fact get their dirty little hands to peek at my report in part. It showed under this heading:

Better Buisness Bureau complaints

AUTHOR: Doug - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, March 05, 2007

I too am dealing with the same thing and I will be filing my own rip off report. I did file a complaint with the central Illinois BBB regarding Afni, Inc but was also instructed to contact my local BBB as well as my Attorney Generals office as well. You may consider this also.
