Thrifty Rent A Car Company is offering PHANTOM DISCOUNTS. There are two that I have come across. The first is to promise $20 cash back on your rental through their automated telephone service. You are eventually re-routed to a customer service agent in India who tries to read a doctoral dissertation to you, but without ever getting to how you actually get the $20 cash back.

Equally as bad is a second 10 per cent discount which is being offered if you pay with your American Express Card. The automated telephone system instructs you to refer to your agent and provide promotion code "AXTH". The agent with whom you are interacting physically then informs you that because the exact cost of your rental is unknown until you return the car then you should simply swipe your American Express Card when you return the vehicle to access the 10 per cent discount.

Upon your return agents pretend not to know anything about the discount and are distastefully rude. Their attitude is without grace and they will even refuse toaccept your American Express Card. The best info they offer is that you must call 1-877-283-0898. Once you dial this number to ask about the 10 per cent discount the (ON THE PHONE) agent tells you you cannot access it at this time and then puts you on hold for an inordinate amount of time (until you are fed up and choose to hang up).

Furthermore, all rental receipt forms are completed before hand indicating that the gas tanks in all cars are full. In fact, many of these cars have three quarter tanks of gas and less. When you take the car back with the original amount of gas they will tack on gasoline charges. CHECK THAT BILL CAREFULLY! THE AMOUNT THEY CHARGE UPON RETURN IS NEVER THE AMOUNT CALCULATED ON THE DAY OF RENTAL EVEN IF THERE ARE NO DAMAGES OR REASONS FOR ADDITIONAL CHARGES.
