I rented a car from SNA airport and returned it at LAX. I filled up at the gas station prior to returning and did not get a receipt. When we returned we were asked for the receipt (never heard of this, never told of this, never had this happen at any other brand). I stated this and referenced the Full fuel gauge. I asked to speak with supervisor and was told that they could not do anything. This is a policy that is as unncessary as it is predatory.

I am a frequent with renting at thrifty, and my advice to you would be to actually read what you are signing and the terms and conditions of the rental. Upon signing the prompts it clearly states that if you do not present a fuel reciept upon return, there will be a one gallon charge ($9.29.) this is to prevent the next customer from being shorted on the tank of gas. Some vehicle's gas guage does not move for several miles after a fuel up, would you appreciate receiving a vehicle that is short a gallon or so, yet still on the 'full' mark?
