2008 Toyota Tacoma tailgate is dangerously weak, and is unable to support what most consider normal weight for a truck tailgate.
Toyota has sold me a Factory Bed extender for my truck bed that is designed to allow the tailgate to take some load. After using this unit my tailgate has bowed out.
The dealership that sold it to me will not repair the tailgate as it is out of warranty. Toyota has TSB that tells technicians when working on the tailgate it should be reinforced. Toyota also now sells a stronger tailgate.
Toyota does not state anywhere that their is a load limit to the tailgate. Also with the bed extender they do not provide any details to be careful of the load you place in the truck bed. I have never had any heavy items in my truck bed, the largest being that of a dirt bike and a rototiller. Toyota needs to take resposibilty for cutting corners and under engineering its products to save money. This a $30000 tuck that can not be used a truck.
Although substandard design may be considered "buyer beware", truck buyers expect a tailgate to support the weight of normal truck use activities. Toyota provides no warning or caution anywhere that the tailgate is of insufficient strength to perform normal 1/2-ton truck duties, and typically (per Internet forum threads) tells their customers that it is their problem and that they should not expect to be able to safely use the tailgate for anything more than hiding the inside of the bed. Since Toyota has produced a substandard designed part, they should have provided a visual warning on the part to alert customers to the danger their product imposes if used in a traditional manner. Since they did not do so, they should be held liable to provide a redesigned part to their customers or full restitution for the purchase price of the vehicles. A Google or similar Internet search on "Tacoma tailgate forum" will substantiate my statements beyond my personal experience with the tailgate bending.

Buy a truck like i did

I have owned 3 tacomas and my last one was a 2006 new off the lot and within 6 months i notice the fake tail gate was bending in addition my v6 tacoma was a pig on gas. The tailgat is just a sign of toyotas direction in quality and customer service is headed. I perchased A 2007 silverado and it has a real tailgate 5.3 v8 but cuts out 4 cylinders and gets 23 mpg with an intake and programmer. I accidently dropped off of a fork lift a 500lb machine and the tailgate just laughed. Toyota i am done with you and your unsafe , poorly made cars that loose control and brakes fail etc. Ask a dealer tech in any service department before you buy a product and most will tell you the truthof the quality and the flaws tacomas have.

Weight Limit

If there is no weight limit on the tailgate I am confused as to why would Toyota sell a Part that is designed for it to support a load. Namely the bed extender. In its description it states " It offers additional space for carrying things in the back of any Toyota pickup. It not only protects your cargo but it also keeps it in the vehicle bed where it belongs."
So selling me something that states it is designed to use to carry a load.
It is easy to point a blame at consumers, but I ask the question why toyota has a doucment labled "BENT READ TAIL GATE" Service bulletin TSB2752 that states
05 - 08 tacomas - To improve tail gate loading and unloading performance, a new reinfoced tail gate is now available. When replacing a bent tail gate, use the following repair information ....
It even states specific VIN and models. I made the assumption that i could have done something wrong until I found many other report of this exact same problem.

The hope is to not let manufactres get away with this by sticking the bill to the consumers. Toyota fixed the problem to many vehicles when it happened under the warranty time. They should have done a recall and some preventative measures and simplly reinforced all tailgates of the trucks listed in the Technical Service Bulletin (TSB).
Structure of a truck should not fail within this time frame for a vehicle. When i purchased the part the dealer should have know about this issue and informed me to improve the performance as it related to the part they sold me. It would have been covered because at that time my vehicle was still under warranty.

See here is the problem. If there was no weight limit sticker on the tailgate, then the tailgate HAS NO support. It was designed to have no support. As you the consumer have used the truck as you have seen fit, blaming Toyota for your tailgate bowing seems a tad rediculuos. As Toyota was not the one useing it you were. You can CLAIM anything you like. Its your opinion. We ONLY have your word that you didnt do ANYTHING to the tailgate to cause it to bow. Reality and physics would both tell us that you are not being truthful. For it to bow there had to have something of weight put on the tailgate in the center of the gate.
It may not seem fair but it is what it is. Go to a junk yard and buy a new one. Or order one online. Either way, all your post is, is a post to b***h. It may make you feel better but its not going to affect Toyota in any decernable way. As we are quickly rolling into 2014, a post about a 5 year old truck and what a company should have done is the higth of hindsight.
This should be more of a warning to anyone purchasing a 2008 Toyota truck USED. If what the poster says is true then they would need to watch out for tailgate issues.
