United Parcel Service Overcharged by UPS Griffin, Georgia

I shipped a package which I received through UPS from my distributor in the exact same box to a customer in Golden Valley, AZ.  I shipped it on Tuesday at the local UPS depot and the counter person filled in the dimensions and weight and said the package would not cost more then $57.08 however I found a charge on my bank statement for $42.88 on December 24th.  While looking at my statement again on Christmas day I found an additional charge of $21.62 which I inquired about and this was what I was told.  Since the counter person filled in this information how can she say that this package weighed more or was larger then it actually was.  The package measured 21" by 24" and was 26" deep.  The package weighed 29 pounds max.

Thank you for your e-mail. Our records indicate that the total charge for tracking number K1943432429 is $64.50, including $42.88 for the Freight Charge and $21.62 for the Dimension weight Charge.

The package was recorded with an actual weight of 19.0 pounds. However, it should have been charged at the 39.5 pound rate due to its dimensions.

The billable weight is based on either the actual package weight or the Dimensional Weight, whichever is greater. Dimensional Weight applies to both Air and Ground shipments. Please note that for UPS Ground shipments, Dimensional Weight rates only apply to packages that are equal to or larger than three cubic feet (5,184 cubic inches). Ground packages that measure less than three cubic feet are billed at their actual weight.

To prevent these charges in the future, enter the package weight and dimensions (length, width, and height in inches) into your UPS shipping system when you first process the shipment. The correct rate will calculate automatically.
