I have been a similiar victim of the University of Phoenix. Along with the 3 other members of my learning team, we feel that we have "bought" a degree and not earned one. I had plans of transferring to a regular accredited college and was assured that the credits would transfer b/c this was also an accredited college. Yeah right, what a joke.

Not only am I 22 and been through the whole "dependent" deal, I was told I would have a shortfall of $3000.00 to complete the year. I continued to receive e-mails and phone calls at work with rude people on the other end who couldn't answer my financial aid questions either. I went in one day before class with all the information I was receiving in the mail regarding the disbursements to the college.

I was under the impression this was the personal loan I applied for and I was not the only one deceived because the financial advisor also believed it to be my personal loan. She said she would get it taken care of and would tell the credit department not to send me to collections yet. Hello, if I'm not paying the bill, why are you automatically enrolling me in classes one after another???

I had no idea about the financial aid thing b/c this was my first time applying for this sort of thing. I had to take 2, yes 2 days off of work in order to get the money taken care of. The outcome of my findings were similiar to the rest of yours, the money was available and the school needed to contact the lender to have it released. Now with the increase in tuition 2 mos after I signed up, I will now have a shortfall $5000.00!!!

I'm sure they new about the tuition increase b/c the sales pitch I received was "Hurry and sign up now, the application fee will be going up in a month or two." I attended the community college and they were able to notify students an entire semester in advance of the tuition increase. Where did they say they found the staff??

Now lets get in to the classes. The first class was great! The second class was a total waste of time and money. The Week one assignments weren't collected until week 2 b/c half the class didn't do them. Our instructor was teaching at the public school at the time our class began so he really didn't have time for our class. When we arrived at Week 3's class, he handed our ungraded assignments back to us from Week one and two and had us come up one by one and show him 3 weeks worth of individual and team assignments.

We all sat there for 4 hours watching him grade other assignments. We never discussed the assignments and when we asked questions about the material, the response was "that's not important" or "refer to the little brown book..." If the info is not important, why did I just pay $1000.00 for the class??? When I spoke to the advisors, I was told to fill out the survey. Again, what a joke. By the third class my team and I had enough. 3 out of 16 people had purchased the books. How are you suppose to have a class discussion on the material that some of us stayed up all night and weekend reading, without the material. Why did some people never buy the books and still make an A like the rest of us??

The class I am in now has a great instructor and she seems to have the class under control. Our learning team is another story. The same 3 of us have stayed together since the first class and this time it was just the 3 of us in the team. On the second class meeting, 5 additional people joined our class and one of them was put in our group. The new team member missed the first and second learning team meeting which we were told would result in an automatic withdrawl. This person is still in our class and we are pulling them through b/c we are turning assignments in as a "team".

As a result, I have transferred in 2 years worth of credits from the community college and can not get them back. My only option is to continue with this program or start out from the bottom. I hope future employers do not hold this "degree" against me when applying for a job that requires a 4 year degree. I was told a degree form U of P is just as good as every other college's but I guess I'll find out when I try to use it.

Until then, I'm not sure what to do.
